The American Indian Movement in the 1960s and 1970s The Red Power movement1 that arose in the 1960s and continued to the late 1970s may be perceived as the second wave of modern pan-Indianism 2. It differed in character from the previous phase of the modern pan-Indian crusade3 in terms of massive support, since the movement, in addition to mobilizing numerous groups of urban Native Americans hailing from different tribal backgrounds, brought about the resurgence of Indian ethnic identity and Indian cultural renewal as well .4 Under its umbrella, there emerged many native organizations devoted to address- ing the still unsolved “Indian question ”. Dave Kranz is one of the most well-known, authoritative and influential journalists in South Dakota�s history. I had the honor and pleasure of working with him for 20 years at the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, until he retired. Dave spent 40+ years in the newspaper business. Although he covered a vast range of topics, he�ll be most remembered for his political reporting. He loves politics and possesses a wealth of information. Until he developed symptoms of Alzheimer�s at the tail end of his career, he could name all of the governors, senators and representatives in South Dakota�s history and could tell you the years they served. And he knew all kinds of facts about many of them. He was a walking encyclopedia of South Dakota politics. He also was extremely knowledgeable about elected officials throughout the United States. Dave was a top-notch reporter. He was great at asking tough questions and gathering information. He had more sources than any reporter I�ve ever known. Elected officials and other sources would call him at work or home any day or night with story leads or just to talk politics. One of the potential downsides to political reporting is dealing with readers who get upset because they believe a story wasn�t fair to their candidate or their issue. Dave would receive phone calls from both sides of issues, from unhappy Democrats and unhappy Republicans. When complaints come from two sides, not one, that�s a sign that the story was balanced and fair. Dave had, and still has, the respect of politicians on both sides of the aisle. -

MILLER, AND EDWARD HOGAN like other states of the Midwest and Great Plains, South Dakota en- joys a moderate republican political culture, rooted in a belief in the equality of individuals and their ability to work together for the greater good. While similarities among these states abound, differences also persist. The political culture of South Dakota is distinct from that of Minnesota, known historically for its liberal leanings, and that of Wy- oming, known for its conservatism. The political culture of South Da- kota, where Populism originated, is even quite distinct from that of North Dakota, where radical pohtical reforms did not take hold until later. As the editor of the Watertown Public Opinion noted in 1890, the "politics of North Dakota is a product of an entirely different breed of cats."' We aim to sketch some of the influences that shape the broad contours of South Dakota's political culture and, therefore, the prac- tice of politics in the state. These contours, like those of a winding streambed, can change in response to events and trends from without but frequently return to form, or what anthropologist Adam Kuper calls "the authentic, local way of being different."^ The authors wish to thank Dwight Adams, Robert Burns, Loren Carlson, Herb Cheever, Alan Clem, Marshall Damgaard, Dave Danbom. Nicholas Black Elk lived a life of holiness during the 19th and 20th centuries. He was a Lakota Sioux holy man and lay convert in South Dakota and he became widely known through the books Black Elk Speaks and Nicholas Black Elk: Medicine Man, Mystic, Missionary. Baptized “Nicholas,” after the saint whose generous giving resonated with Lakota traditions, he committed his life to better knowing the Great Spirit and teaching Jesus’ way of peace, love, and harmony towards all creation. In so doing he seamlessly lived Christian and Native ways without contradiction and led over 400 Dakota-Lakota people to baptism in Jesus Christ. 1 2. So why canonize Nicholas Black Elk and why now? By baptism, all Christians are called to become saints, and since its first days, the church has canonized outstanding Christians it identifies as intercessors of prayer and models of virtue. But north of Mexico, such efforts were delayed until 1884 when the United States bishops felt sufficiently organized. Then they nominated three 17th century candidates from New York State – Mohawk-Algonquin convert Kateri Tekakwitha and Jesuit Father Isaac Jogues, both on the left, and other Jesuit companions added later. As martyrs, the causes of the Jesuits concluded first and they were canonized in 1930. Kateri’s cause then followed and ended with her canonization in 2012.
