Toilet Training Children with Down Syndrome BOOKS FOR CHILDREN By Lillie Huddleston, Ed.S.

Toilet training can be a challenging process for both parents and children. There are special considerations when working with children with Down syndrome that may help ease the process. Delays in onset of readiness are typical in the child with Down syndrome; thus, the first step is to determine your child’s level of readiness for toilet training. Potty Key questions to determine your child’s readiness include: by Leslie Patricell

—— Is your child aware of whether or not he or she is wet or dry? Children with Down syndrome may exhibit a delayed ability to sense if their blad- ders or intestines are full and ready to void. —— Is your child dry for one and half to two hours? —— Can your child walk comfortably to and from the restroom? —— Does your child have the motor skills to achieve the steps to , such as pulling up or down clothing and sitting on the toilet or potty chair for two to five A Potty for Me! minutes with minimal assistance? by Karen Katz —— Does your child watch others and show interest in the toileting routine? —— Does your child signal the need to go to the restroom verbally or nonverbally? —— Can your child follow one and two-step directions? It is important to wait until your child demonstrates an interest in toilet training as well. Parents should use a calm confident tone while working with their children. Remember to avoid punishing or shaming the child for accidents as they are a normal part of toilet training. It is important to praise your child for any success along the toilet training journey. Finally, be sure that you are able to implement a consistent Sesame Street: toileting schedule. For example, you should not begin toilet training during vacations Potty Time with Elmo or other times when your schedule is unpredictable.

Your child’s toilet training program should be designed around his or her strengths and interests. For example, it may be helpful to use books or videos to help teach your child about toileting or to reward him or her for toileting successes. It may be helpful to provide visual cues, such as pictures of the steps of the toileting process. You may also want to record your child’s elimination schedule for a few days in order to have baseline information for planning toileting trips.
