  • Sher Shah Suri
MODULE-3 FORMATION OF MUGHAL EMPIRE TOPIC- SHER SHAH SURI PRIYANKA.E.K ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY LITTLE FLOWER COLLEGE, GURUVAYOOR Sher Shah Suri, whose original name was Farid was the founder of the Suri dynasty. Son of a petty jagirdar, neglected by his father and ill treated by his step-mother, he very successfully challenged the authority of Mughal emperor Humayun, drove him out of India and occupied the throne of Delhi. All this clearly demonstrates his extra-ordinary qualities of his hand, head and heart. Once again Sher Shah established the Afghan Empire which had been taken over by Babur. The intrigues of his mother compelled the young Farid Khan to leave Sasaram (Bihar), the jagir of his father. He went to Jaunpur for studies. In his studies, he so distinguished himself that the subedar of Jaunpur was greatly impressed. He helped him to become the administrator of his father’s jagir which prospered by his efforts. His step-mother’s jealousy forced him to search for another employment and he took service under Bahar Khan, the ruler of South Bihar, who gave him the title of Sher Khan for his bravery in killing a tiger single-handed. But the intrigues of his enemies compelled him to leave Bihar and join the camp of Babur in 1527. He rendered valuable help to Babur in the campaign against the Afghans in Bihar. In due course, Babur became suspicious of Sher Khan who soon slipped away. As his former master Bahar Khan, the ruler of South Bihar had died, he was made the guardian and regent of the minor son of the deceased.

  • Land of Stupas: Sarnath
Land of Stupas: Sarnath drishtiias.com/printpdf/land-of-stupas-sarnath (This news analysis is based on the article “Stupa-hopping in Sarnath” by art historian Rana Safvi which appeared in The Hindu on 3rd February, 2019.) Sarnath, Varanasi is known for two things: Buddha gave his first sermon and for the Ashoka Pillar. In ancient times, this place was known by many names — Rishipatana, Mrigadava and Mrigadaya. The word Sarnath comes from a corruption of the name Saranganatha (lord of deer). The ashes of the Buddha were buried in stupas built at locations associated with important events in the Buddha’s life including: Lumbini (where he was born), Bodh Gaya (where he achieved Enlightenment), Deer Park at Sarnath (where he preached his first sermon sharing the Four Noble Truths (also called the dharma or the law), and Kushinagara (where he died). The choice of these sites and others were based on both real and legendary events. Stupas at Sarnath Two hundred years after Buddha, the Mauryan emperor, Ashoka, fought the battle of Kalinga and, disgusted by the bloodshed, became a Buddhist. Ashoka built many beautiful stupas and monasteries in Sarnath. 1/3 Sir Alexander Cunningham (First Director-General of Archaeological Survey of India), excavated the Dhamekh, Dharmarajika, and Chaukhandi stupas along with a monastery and temple between 1834 and 1836. According to an inscription at Chaukhandi stupa, Humayun sought refuge in Sarnath when he was escaping from the battle of Chausa. Note: The battle of Chausa was fought between the Mughal emperor, Humayun, and the Afghan, Sher Shah Suri in 1539 at Chausa (modern-day Bihar, India).

Humayun՚s Retreat and Afghan Revival (1530 - 1540) Humayun succeeded Babur in 1530. The main problems faced by Humayun were: The newly captured territories were not consolidated. Humayun did not seek respect of the Mughal nobility. Chaghatai nobles, who supported Babur, did not support Humayun. He was sharing the power with his brothers. Humayun governed the centre-Delhi, Agra and Central India, while Kamran was given Afghanistan and Punjab. Threat posed by Afghans. Bahadur Shah was consolidating power in Malwa and Rajputana. He attacked Chittor in 1534. He annexed Mandu and camped there waiting for Bahadur Shah՚s return to Gujarat. The absence of Humayun in Agra resulted in rebellions. Sher Shah initiated expansionist and consolidating policy in Bihar and Bengal. He invaded the Bengal army and defeated him in the battle of Surajgarh. Sher Sha attacked Mughal territories. Humayun appointed Hindu Beg to check the movements of Sher Shah. Sher Shah captured Gaur (capital of Bengal) in 1538. He then took control over the route of Agra, which made Humayun challenging to communicate. Brother of Humayun, Hindal Mirza, who was providing supplies for his army, declared independence. Humayun and Sher Shah fought at Chausa in 1539, and defeated Humayun.

DAMAGE SCENARIO UNDER HYPOTHETICAL RECURRENCE OF 1934 EARTHQUAKE INTENSITIES IN VARIOUS DISTRICTS IN BIHAR Authored by: Dr. Anand S. Arya, FNA, FNAE Professor Emeritus, Deptt. of Earthquake Engg., I.I.T. Roorkee Former National Seismic Advisor, MHA, New Delhi Padmashree awarded by the President, 2002 Member BSDMA, Bihar Assisted by: Barun Kant Mishra PS to Member BSDMA, Bihar i Vice Chairman Bihar State Disaster Management Authority Government of Bihar FOREWORD Earthquake is a natural hazard that can neither be prevented nor predicted. It is generated by the process going on inside the earth, resulting in the movement of tectonic plates. It has been seen that wherever earthquake occurs, it occurs again and again. It is quite probable that an earthquake having the intensity similar to 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake may replicate again. Given the extent of urbanization and the pattern of development in the last several decades, the repeat of 1934 in future will be catastrophic in view of the increased population and the vulnerable assets. Prof A.S.Arya, member, BSDMA has carried out a detailed analysis keeping in view the possible damage scenario under a hypothetical event, having intensity similar to 1934 earthquake. Census of India 2011 has been used for the population and housing data, while the revised seismic zoning map of India is the basis for the maximum possible earthquake intensity in various blocks of Bihar. Probable loss of human lives, probable number of housing, which will need reconstruction, or retrofitting has been computed for various districts and the blocks within the districts. The following grim picture of losses has emerged for the state of Bihar.

  • District Profile Buxar Introduction
DISTRICT PROFILE BUXAR INTRODUCTION Buxar district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar. The present district of Buxar, comprising of Buxar Sadar and Dumraon sub- division of the erstwhile Bhojpur district, came into existence in 1991. Buxar district is a part of Patna division. Buxar district is bounded in the north and west by the districts of Ballia and Ghazipur of Uttar Pradesh, and in the east and south by the districts of Rohtas, Bhojpur and Kaimur of Bihar. The important rivers flowing through the district are Ganges, Thora, Dharmawati and Karmnasha. The Ganges forms the northern boundary of the district while river Karmnasha joins the Ganges near Chausa. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The etymology of word Buxar is "Vyaghra Sar" which in Sanskrit means tiger and pond respectively. It is said that the tiger face of Rishi Vedshira, an outcome of the curse of the sage Rishi Durvasha, was restored after bathing in a holy tank which was later named as VyaghraSar. Buxar finds reference in Ramayana, Brahma Purana, Varah Purana and other ancient literature. During the pre-historic period, Buxar was the abode of eminent saints and the battlefield of Gods and demons while in modern history it was a combat zone against foreign invasions. Buxar has many historical sites and is famous as a town of temples. Archaeological findings at Buxar have established a link of Buxar with ancient civilizations of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. The historic battle of Buxar was fought here in 1764. It heralded the establishment of the rule of the East India Company in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent.
