Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

From the 1970s to the present, the Comic Market (hereafter Comiket) has been a leading venue for manga and anime fan activi- ties in Japan. Over the three days of the convention, more than thirty-seven thousand groups participate, and their dōjinshi (self-published fan fiction) and character goods generate ¥10 billion in sales.1 Contrary to the common stereo- type of anime/manga cult fans—the so-called otaku—who are males in their twenties and thirties, more than 70 percent of the participants in this fan fic- tion market are reported to be women in their twenties and thirties.2 Dōjinshi have created a locus where female fans vigorously explore identities and desires that are usually not expressed openly in public. The overwhelming majority of women’s fan fiction consists of stories that adapt characters from official me- dia to portray male–male homosexual romance and/or erotica.

  • Final Fantasy VII (1997) Is a Hugely Successful Japanese Srole Playing Game
M170 CARR M/UP 24/11/05 11:06 AM Page 72 Phil's G4 Phil's G4:Users:phil:Public: PHIL'S JOBS:9595 - POLIT CHAPTER 06 Playing Roles Andrew Burn QUARESOFT’S Final Fantasy VII (1997) is a hugely successful Japanese SRole Playing Game. It sold to virtually all Japan’s Playstation owners within the first forty-eight hours of its release in 1997, and was no less popular in the USA on its release there later that year.1 In this chapter, we use FFVII as a case study to explore one of the key dimensions of Role Playing Games: the avatar. ‘Avatar’ is the Sanskrit word for ‘descent’, and refers to the embodi- ment of a god on earth. It is by means of the avatar that the player becomes embodied in the game, and performs the role of protagonist. Cloud Strife, the protagonist-avatar of FFVII, is a mysterious mercenary. Dressed in leather and big boots, he wields a sword as big as himself; but he has an oddly childish face, whimsically delineated in the ‘deformed aesthetic’ of manga, with enormous, glowing blue eyes, framed in cyberpunk blond spikes (Illustration 6).
