The Apostrophe The Apostrophe Adapted from The Little, Brown Handbook, 11th Edition, Contributors Dayne Sherman, Jayetta Slawson, Natasha Whitton, and Jeff Wiemelt, 2010, 451-458. Prepared by the Southeastern Writing Center. Last updated July, 2011. An apostrophe (’) is used to form the possessive case, to indicate omissions in contractions, and to form certain plurals. Forming Possessives Use –‘s to form the possessive of a singular noun, even one that ends in –s. However, if the pronunciation of the possessive form is awkward, form the possessive by adding an apostrophe only after the -s. Example: John’s car Doris’s dog Jesus’ journey (not Jesus’s journey) Use an apostrophe only to form the possessive of a plural noun that ends in –s. Example: The boys’ bicycles the dogs’ toys Use an –‘s to form the possessive of a plural noun that does not end in –s. Example: The children’s room Put only the last word of a compound noun in the possessive form. Example: The secretary of state’s office her sister-in-law’s house If two or more individuals possess something together, use the possessive form only with the last person mentioned. Example: Becky and Jane’s book collection If two or more individuals possess something individually, use the possessive form with each person mentioned. Example: John’s and Jim’s boats Forming Contractions Use an apostrophe in place of letters omitted in contractions. Common contractions combine a subject and a verb or a verb and an adverb. Example: he is/he has = he’s we are = we’re Common Misuse The possessive pronouns its and whose are often confused with the contractions it’s (it is or it has) and who’s (who is or who has). For these types of possessive pronouns, it is not necessary to use an apostrophe to show possession. Introduction Phrases and clauses are groups of words that give specific information in a sentence. A clause has both a subject and a predicate, while a phrase does not. Some phrases and clauses function like adverbs, which means they modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb in a sentence. • An adverb phrase tells “how,” “when,” “where,” or “why.” It is often a prepositional phrase. Soccer players wear protective gear on the field. (tells where; modifies verb wear) Soccer gloves are thick with padding. (tells how; modifies adjective thick) • An adverb clause can also tell “how,” “when,” “where,” or “why.” It is always a dependent clause. Gloves protect goalies when they catch the ball. (tells when; modifies verb protect) Goalies need gloves because the ball can hurt.     Phrases What is a phrase? Phrases are like fragments; they do not express a complete thought because they do not have a subject and a predicate. Prepositional Phrases Prepositional phrases begin with prepositions and end with objects of the preposition. For instance, in the sentence “The snow fell on the ground,” on is the preposition that starts the phrase and ground is the object that ends it. You could also say, “The snow falls on the cold, damp ground.” In this sentence, the prepositional phrase is on the cold, damp ground because it still starts with a preposition and ends with the object of the preposition, even though several words are in between to describe ground. Participle Phrases What is a participle? Participle: verb + ending (ing, -en, -ed, -t) that acts like a modifier. A participial phrase is a participle and all the words that relate to it; participle phrases can function as adjectives or adverbs. How do I find them? Participle phrases have three characteristics: They can be removed and the sentence will still make sense; they have an ending such as “–ing,” “-en,” “-ed,” or “–t”; they can be moved around some and still make sense in the sentence. Can I have an example? "The snow falling at North Greenville is beautiful." In this sentence, falling is a participle because fall is a verb and has had an “–ing” ending added to it. Falling at North Greenville is the participial phrase because at North Greenville describes where snow is falling. The whole phrase—falling at North Greenville—is just describing the word snow.

    Quotation marks and apostrophes in UEB The problem The International Council on English Braille (ICEB) is reviewing the braille signs used to represent the apostrophe and quotation marks in Unified English Braille (UEB). In print, the apostrophe is represented using the same or similar symbol as single quotation marks. In braille, these identical print symbols are represented with different braille symbols according to their meaning. Intervention may be required from braille transcribers to obtain correct braille, and automated braille generated for use on a refreshable braille display can contain errors. This document gives four options for alternative representations of the apostrophe and quotation marks in UEB. Please read the document carefully and share your opinion with us via the online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/UEB-apostrophe. The UEB Code Maintenance Committee will consider your responses in deciding whether to change the signs used for apostrophe and quotes. Briefly, the braille output may depend on how the print has been generated: with 'straight' or ‘directional’ apostrophes and single quotes. Different countries and publishers may use “double” or ‘single’ quotes as their predominant quotes with the other kind used as inner quotes (quotes within a quote). Apostrophes may therefore be the same print sign as the predominant or inner quotes. Sounds complicated?
