  • Konstantin Kakanias Mrs. Tependris: the Quarantine Diaries July 30 – August 15, 2020

Konstantin Kakanias Mrs. Tependris: the Quarantine Diaries July 30 – August 15, 2020

Konstantin Kakanias Mrs. Tependris: The Quarantine Diaries July 30 – August 15, 2020 GAVLAK Los Angeles is pleased to announce Mrs. Tependris: The Quarantine Diaries, a solo exhibition of new works on paper by Los Angeles-based artist Konstantin Kakanias (b. 1961, Athens, GR). This is the artist’s second solo presentation with the gallery. Kakanias began creating The Quarantine Diaries at the request of a friend on Instagram, authoring humorous posts from the cleverly critical perspective of his iconic character, Mrs. Tependris. Running through the series of posts and featured paintings is an indelible lust for life even in these strange and devastating times. Mrs. Tependris urges us to “travel with the mind”, a fitting mantra in the times of quarantine and social unease (awakening?). Konstantin Kakanias is known for creating whimsical paintings observing the decadent worlds of art, design, travel, and luxury. In this series, Kakanias’ playful brush and bright color palette contrast subjects and situations that are far from cheerful. Airing Mrs. Tependris’ grievances in an open letter to Covid-19, Kakanias relays a bold and witty rebuke to this situation we have all had to confront in our own way. With the guidance and unique perspective of Mrs. Tependris, we may come out of this alright: Miss Corona, You little germ. How dare you even present yourself in front of my eyes? I will destroy you, crush you, smash you with my stilettos. If I ever see you back on Park Avenue, I will petrify you, you little shit. What? You say that swearing is not chic? Who are you to talk about anything chic, you viral atrocity.

According to sources, the business titan is in talks with Marc Jacobs about becoming the new couturier of the fabled French house. Such a move would unseat Jacobs from Louis Vuitton, the cash-cow brand at LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton — and possibly set in motion a reshuffl ing at the French luxury giant. Konstantin Kakanias Mrs. Tependris

Konstantin Kakanias Mrs. Tependris: The Quarantine Continues September 16 – October 10, 2020 GAVLAK Palm Beach is pleased to announce Mrs. Tependris: The Quarantine Continues, a solo exhibition of works on paper and ceramics by Los Angeles-based artist Konstantin Kakanias. This is the artist’s third solo presentation with Gavlak and the first at our Palm Beach location. Kakanias began creating The Quarantine Diaries at the onset of lockdown, authoring humorous captions from the cleverly critical perspective of his iconic character, Mrs. Tependris. First exhibited at Gavlak Los Angeles as The Quarantine Diaries, the Palm Beach exhibition will feature the continued (?) series with new work featuring the iconic Mrs. Tependris. The series of social media posts, animations, and gouache works on paper offer a perspective on our present times; navigating through what should be by now a post-quarantine world. Today’s reality is quite different from the mental imagery we once had, the one of reclaimed carefree and mask-free days. We are de facto stuck within the gloomy days of the ‘new normal.’ While collectively heading towards an uncertain future, Mrs. Tependris inspires us to “travel with the mind.” Also on view will be a small selection of works on paper from the artist’s first solo exhibition with Gavlak, pieces that have been seen within the 1990s printed or digitally published pages of T Magazine: The New York Times Style Magazine. Kakanias created over 400 drawings during his five year period with T Magazine. All works are gouache on paper, and each drawing was always physically sent to the publisher from wherever Kakanias happened to be in the world, pre-pandemic era.
