“Together Toward Tomorrow” Tinton Falls School District “Together Toward Tomorrow” Summer Reading 2020 Tinton Falls School District Dear Parent/Guardian, Summer reading is crucial to student success. Continuing to develop strong reading habits over the summer allows students to excel in the coming school year and can even put them ahead of their peers. On the contrary, when students do not read over the summer, they are at risk of entering the next grade level having lost important academic skills. Since reading over the summer is vital to your child’s education, our media specialist, media clerks, literacy coach, and teachers worked collaboratively to create a list of suggested books for students to enjoy during their time at home. This summer reading list can be used as a guide for parents and students to select reading level and age appropriate books. In an effort to continue to “Go Green,” our summer reading list will be available online on our school website at www.tfschools.org. As in years past, this comprehensive guide continues to be a great resource and tool to promote the love of reading in the summer months. Please use this list as a guide, but do not feel limited to these choices. Titles are broken down by grade level. Since public libraries are closed at this time, here are a few free sites to find digital books: hoopla.com (need a library card), getepic.com, and rivet.area120.com. With the right book, the right setting and a little incentive, your child will continue to develop good reading habits over the summer months. I hope that every child has an opportunity to relax and enjoy many wonderful books over the summer. Sincerely, Lisa Goldey Superintendent ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Many thanks to our Media Clerks, Media Specialist, Literacy Coach, and teachers for their collaboration with preparing this summer reading list. We thank all of them for sharing their expertise, as well as their love of books and reading with us. Michelle McMullin Media Clerk Mahala F. Helpful Tips For Supporting Summer Reading ● Read everywhere! Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, at the beach, on a blanket at the park, or anywhere else. ● Lead by example- Make reading a part of your own summer routine. One of the biggest factors that determine if a student will be a lifelong reader is seeing someone in their family set that example. ● Let your child choose what he/she wants to read even though it may not be your first choice. ● When reading, ask your child questions to monitor their comprehension. Questions such as, “Why did the character act that way?” or “What do you think will happen next?” can help deepen your child’s thoughts about the text. ● When a suggested title is not available, substitutions by the same author are recommended. ● For parents of young children, please keep in mind when helping your child select their summer reading that the book they choose should be at a comfortable “just right” level for them. You can help your child select a book by using the “five finger method.” Open the book to any page and have your child read aloud. Each time he/she does not know a word, have them hold one finger up. If they get to five before completing the page, the book is too difficult for them. KINDERGARTEN (Entering 1st grade) Bleiman, Andrew - Z00 BABIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD This picture book presents the most charming critters ever: baby animals, ranging from the adorable to the zany. (Various Titles) Capucilli, Alyssa Satin - BISCUIT AND THE BIG PARADE The parade is here, and Biscuit can’t wait to see the fire trucks, jugglers, and even clowns! Carle, Eric - WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL? Everybody has a favorite animal. Some like little white dogs or big black cats or hoppy brown bunnies best. Others prefer squishy snails or tall giraffes or sleek black panthers. With beautiful illustrations and charming personal stories, 14 children's book artists share their favorite animals and why they love them. Cleary, Brian P. - A DOLLAR, A PENNY, HOW MUCH AND HOW MANY? The comical cats of the wildly popular Words Are CATegorical® series show young readers how to count and combine pennies, nickels, fives, tens, and more. Cornwell, Gaia -JABARI JUMPS Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He’s finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he’s a great jumper, so he’s not scared at all. “Looks easy,” says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can’t help but root for. Cronin, Doreen - CLICK, CLACK, QUACK TO SCHOOL They can stand in line (sort of), use indoor voices (perhaps), and are capable of sharing (rumor has it), so the Click Clack critters are ready for school…but is school ready for them? A charming addition to the award-winning Click, Clack series from the New York Times bestselling and Caldecott winning team who brought you Click, Clack, Moo and Click, Clack, Surprise! Dean, James - PETE THE CAT’S GROOVY BAKE SALE The school's bake sale is a day away! Pete tries to make something yummy for his friends. But he seems to be only making a giant mess! Will Pete have something delicious in time for the bake sale? Garland, Michael - FISH HAD A WISH Fish had a wish. Then a stranger comes and throws everything off! Hills, Tad - DUCK AND GOOSE GO TO THE BEACH Duck wants to go on an adventure. Goose doesn't. London, Jonathan - FROGGY’S BIRTHDAY WISHES (Various Titles) In the latest book from the Froggy series, Froggy is afraid that everyone has forgotten his birthday. Luckily, Froggy is happily surprised at the end! Long, Ethan - CLARA AND CLEM UNDER THE SEA Clara and Clem are off on an adventure under the sea! The two swim with dolphins, hug a shark, and even find buried treasure. Let's go! Maccarone, Grace - FIRST GRADE FRIENDS: RECESS MESS GREEN/GREEN Sam needs to use the restroom, but he can’t read or spell. Is he a B-O-Y or a G-I-R-L? Macken, JoAnn Early - WAITING OUT THE STORM A mother reassures her child about the wind, lightning, and thunder when a storm passes through. McMullan, Kate - I’M BIG! He’s a great big sauropod. He’s a whole lotta lizard, and he’s . lost. Have you seen his herd? Meltzer, Brad - ORDINARY PEOPLE CHANGE THE WORLD: I AM ALBERT EINSTEIN Even when he was a kid, Albert Einstein did things his own way. He thought in pictures instead of words, and his special way of thinking helped him understand big ideas like the structure of music and why a compass always points north. Those ideas made him want to keep figuring out the secrets of the universe. Other people thought he was just a dreamer, but because of his curiosity, Einstein grew up to be one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known. What makes a hero? This lively, fun biography series by best-selling author Brad Meltzer answers the question, one great role model at a time. Patricelli, Leslie - HIGHER! HIGHER! The sky’s no limit in a witty picture book about a child on a swing and the wonders of the imagination. Penfold, Andrea - ALL ARE WELCOME Follow a group of children through a day in their school, where everyone is welcome with open arms. A school where kids in patkas, hijabs, and yarmulkes play side-by-side with friends in baseball caps. A school where students grow and learn from each other’s traditions and the whole community gathers to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Phelan, Matt - PIGNIC A blue sky. A shady tree. A bright kite. And a full picnic basket. Four little pigs and their parents head outside to enjoy a beautiful day. With a little help from some new (and unexpected) friends, they climb trees, fly kites, and enjoy a delicious picnic. Even a sudden rain shower can’t ruin their fun. Because rain means . MUD! Hooray! The award-winning and New York Times –bestselling Matt Phelan has created a timeless, must-have picture book for the youngest reader. • Read Favorite Greek Myths by Mary Pope Osborne and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Eighth Grade Summer Reading Project Due: Tuesday, September 3, 2019 Reading Assignment: Read Favorite Greek Myths by Mary Pope Osborne and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Writing Task: Favorite Greek Myths tells stories from Greek mythology in a traditional way. The Lightning Thief takes characters, events, and ideas from Greek mythology and tells a story that combines those traditional elements with modern characters and a modern setting. Your assignment is to select a story from Favorite Greek Myths and use the characters, events, and ideas from that traditional story in writing your own, original story that also includes modern characters and a modern setting. The Lightning Thief features humor and action, and if you want your story to be funny and/or action packed, that’s fine. However, it would also be fine to write a story with more of a serious or sad tone. Special Note for Students Who Have Already Read The Lightning Thief: If you have already read this novel, read the next novel (that you have not already read) from the Percy Jackson series. If you have already read the entire Percy Jackson series, begin (or continue) reading the Heroes of Olympus series, which is a series-length sequel to the Percy Jackson series. If you have already read the Heroes of Olympus series, continue with The Trials of Apollo series. Here are the titles of all the books, in the order in which they should be read: First series (Percy Jackson series): The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, The Last

The Trials of Apollo: The Burning Maze Rick Riordan Reviewed by: Joshua Wahl, 16 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Apollo was a glorious god but has been cast down to earth by Zeus as nothing but a normal, mortal teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. Apollo must restore five Oracles in order to earn his return to his godly form. This begins with Lester and his demigod master, Meg and their satyr guide, Grover traveling through the labyrinth in order to reach California quickly to free the next oracle. Once they reach California, they discover it is engulfed in wildfires and the surrounding plant life is being destroyed. Grover leads them to shelter with a group of dryads, which happens to be the remains of Meg’s original childhood home. She lived there with her botanist father until he was killed in New York, her house was burnt to the ground and she was taken in by Nero. Lester figures out the identity of the third emperor, Caligula. They meet with Piper McLean and investigate a section of the labyrinth, where the heat and fire seem to be emanating from. In the labyrinth they figure out that Medea is working with Caligula to try to make him the new sun god. Then they meet with Jason, another demigod, who helps them find Caligula’s fleet of 100 yachts. They battle Caligula where one-character sacrifices himself so his friends can escape with the tools needed to find the oracle. Lester and Meg reenter the labyrinth and complete their mission.
