MUJS 1132 Jazz Performance Fundamentals - Trumpet Spring Semester – 2017 Syllabus and Course Schedule Instructor – Mike Steinel [email protected]
Course Objective(s)
1. Continued development of basic trumpet skills (tone, articulation and facility). 2. Exploring jazz trumpet style through the transcription and memorization of classic jazz trumpet solos. 3. Developing technical skills related to basic improvisation (scales, modes, arpeggios and basic vocabulary).
Course Activities
1. Solo Transcription and Memorization
Each student will be provided with a list classic jazz solos. Students will be required to transcribe and recreate 6 solos from memory in class (see class schedule). Grading - Students will be graded on the degree of accuracy of emulation (rhythm, similarity in tone, articulation, and pitch). Students who haven’t completed the entire solo or cannot play the entire solo for memory will receive grades of less than B.
2. Technical Studies
Assignments related to scales, arpeggios and basic jazz vocabulary will be given using Building A Jazz Vocabulary (Available at Penders or through online music merchants). Grading - Students will be graded on accuracy and tempo.
3. Other Activities
Students will continue working with material in the Embouchure Stabilizer Packet provided last semester. Addition activities such as listening and sight reading may be included. These activities are not graded.
Bring all materials to each class meeting.
Note: an “A or B” in this class is a prerequisite for Jazz Improvisation.
