Since the first Vatican City State law on anti-money laundering (AML) came into force on 1 April 2011, the IOR has embarked on a course of reform, of which transparency is a key element. The reform process led to the appointment of the Pontifical Commission by the Holy Father on 24 June 2013, and will result in giving the IOR a new direction, as was done in 1942 and in 1990. It is important to remember that the IOR’s reason for existing is to serve the Catholic Church, in particular its works of charity and its missionary activities, by safeguarding assets and providing payment services.

  • Charting the Roles of Women in the Catholic Church C Urrent Breakdown of Male/Female Leadership in Vatican D Icasteries
FutureChurch Charting the roles of women in the Catholic Church C urrent breakdown of male/female leadership in Vatican d icasteries Pope Francis has called for “a more incisive presence for women” in the Catholic Church. At the most recent Consistory of cardinals on February 12 and 13, 2015, Fr. Federico Lombardi reported that the cardinals expressed the hope of “an increasingly active role” for women. Although Pope Francis stated the door is closed on the question of ordination for women to the priesthood, he has been emphatic in his call for a stronger presence of women elsewhere. He recently appointed Sr. Mary Melone, the first women to date, to head a Pontifical University; Sr. Luzia Premoli, the first women to be appointed as a member of the Congregation on Evangelizat ion of Peoples, and has stated that women should take up positions of greater leadership within the Vatican. So how many women are in positions of leadership within the Curia? How many assert real influence? While it is difficult to accurately measure the level of influence women exercise, the chart below has been generated to further that discussion by showing the current roles women play now in Vatican congregations, pontifical councils, and other commissions, committees and offices. Secretariats, Congregations, and Pontifical Councils There are two secretariats, nine congregations and twelve pontifical councils. Below is a chart indicating the number of Vatican officials broken out in terms of male/female roles from undersecretary and above. While women have slowly gained certain leadership roles in the Vatican, you still need just one hand to count those who hold top- level positions in the secretariats, congregations and pontifical councils.

This is a quote one finds in the internet and yet this is the heart of the matter of a religious consecration. The primary principle found in our Priory’s newly- revised Formation Manual states: Vocation is a gift from God and a personal, free and radical response from the person called. Novice Marianna Joseph and Novice Reginalda Kamari have been waiting for the day of their consecration to come. Likewise, Sr. Matilde Shikongo OSB and Sr. Sabina Zolonimu OSB have been looking forward to the day when their formative journey will be sealed in the total gift of themselves to God. The First Profession of Vows took place on June 11, 2016 and a week after, on June 18, 2016, the community witnessed the Final Profession of Vows. Both Eucharistic Celebrations were held at the Priory House Chapel in Nubuamis. In preparation for their day of consecration, the Novices and Junior Sisters had their retreats with Sr. Oranna Franke OSB and Fr. Franziskus Swartbooi OSFS respectively. Sr. Oranna focused on the theme of how to become “People of God” who are ready to serve, be broken, taken and given.

The Holy See EPISCOPAL ORDINATION OF FR. FERNANDO VÉRGEZ ALZAGA, L.C., TITULAR BISHOP OF VILLAMAGNA DI PROCONSOLARE, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE GOVERNORATE OF VATICAN CITY STATE HOMILY OF POPE FRANCIS Vatican Basilica Friday, 15 November 2013 Video Photo Gallery 1 Photo Gallery 2 By L'Osservatore Romano , Weekly ed. in English, n. 47 Pope Francis entrusted a special task to the newly ordained Bishop Fernando Vérgez Alzaga LC, Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City State, charging him with “the pastoral care of Vatican employees”. The Pope called the Spanish prelate to be for them both “a father and a brother... with true love and tenderness”. At the ceremony — which was held on Friday afternoon, 15 November, in St Peter’s Basilica — the Pope gave the customary homily provided in the Italian edition of the Roman Pontifical for the ordination of bishops to which he added a few personal remarks. Present at the ordination were many employees of the Governorate and of the Holy See, in addition to about 600 Legionaries of Christ, who are confreres of the new Bishop. The Bishop of Rome invited the bishop of Spain — who began serving as Secretary General on 30 August — to follow the example of the Good Shepherd “who knows his sheep, is known by them and for whom he did not hesitate to give his life”. It is the love “of a father and brother” for “all 2 those who God entrusts to you”, Pope Francis added, “most of all for priests, deacons and your collaborators in the ministry” but also for “the poor, the defenseless, and those who are in need of acceptance and help”.
