General Of the modern censuses to date (1841 - 1911) this is the least informative and reliable. It was taken on Sunday night, June 6th, when many wherries, on passage, could have been moored well away from the routes of enumerators as they also could have been when each Household's form was distributed in the days prior to census night and collected afterwards. The only questions asked were: Name, Age, Sex, Occupation, Address. Enumerators were instructed not to include more than one given ('christian') name and were not expected to give a precise address as they were not in common usage then. Thus wherry names are never recorded.

Occupations Only 5 Suffolk men are listed as 'wherryman', but on the other hand there were 15 in County Durham. These would presumably have been small passenger 'wherries'. Robert Simper says, in Norfolk Rivers and Harbours (1996), 'In recent times the crew of a wherry have been called skipper and mate, but the old practice was to call them wherryman and waterman.' The search terms 'waterman', 'boatman', etc are not proof of connection with wherries, but have been included where place of residence, family name etc might indicate it. I suspect 'waterman' covers a multitude of sins. I have ignored those living in King's Lynn, , Ipswich etc, but included those in parishes along the River Blyth. An instruction to enumerators reads: 'The profession, &c., of wives, or of sons or daughters living with their husbands or parents, and assisting them, but not apprenticed or receiving wages, need not be set down.' Where a son is shown as following his father as a waterman etc, but both were at home or on board on census night, I have made separate entries for each.

Ages Enumerators were instructed thus: 'Write the age of every person under the age of 15 years as it is stated to you. For persons of 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of five years in which the age is.' Thus - for persons aged 15 -19 years the age is given as 15; for 20 - 24 they are given as 20, etc.

Mistakes Handwriting was different in 1841, varied enormously from one enumerator to another, and is often difficult to read. There were mistakes made transfering information from the household forms (destroyed after being copied) to the enumerators' forms (available on line); there were many mistakes made in indexing for the digitised version, and there are sure to have been mistakes made by me, both reading and typping. Corrections and omissions please to [email protected] Thanks if you do.

Relationships Relationships are not given on the household returns and have had to be infered from data, ie guessed. Beware of the possibility of nieces and nephews sharing surnames with heads of households. For those reading this in the distant future there were only 2 genders recognised at this time. Only one couple, James and Mary Mace, are shown as definitely being together on a 'barge' on census night, so possibly living there, though many more are possibly doing so. See footnote.

Address Often just a village is given. In and Yarmouth it is often just the street name, or even just the parish, which in Gt Yarmouth was St Nicholas for all. For information about Norwich staithes and parishes see note at bottom of '1841 On boats' document. All places mentioned were in Norfolk at the time unless otherwise stated. Southtown was added to Yarmouth in 1681, Gorleston became part of Norfolk in 1835, though some addresses in 1841 indicated Suffolk, and the border was moved south to add Fritton, Belton, and Hopton only in 1974. Parishes along the River Blyth are indicated * in the Abode column.

Birthplaces Place of birth ('bn') is asked for on the Returns only as 'Whether Born in same County'. See above in Abbreviations. The only other distinctions made were Scottish, Irish and Foreigners. Those born in Wales are not differentiated from the English.

Thanks to Mike Sparkes, NWT Archivist, for knowing things I could never find out on my own, and to Trevor Hipperson, NWT Webmaster, for doing digital things I could never hope to do. Thanks to both for encouragement. Thanks to Dr Keith Bacon of Catfield for help with locations there.

* Blandon, William - on the Blyth Navigation * Crane, Tryphena - a Christian woman mentioned in Romans 16:12. It can mean dainty, delicate or luxurious. * Helsdon, Henry and Mary - your compiler's gt-gt-gt-grandparents. Martin Helsdon is gt-gt-grandfather. * Mace, James and Mary. A rare example of, presumably, husband and wife, definitely together on a boat. * Wright, Mary - the only female boatbuilder found. * Wright, Thomas - Kerenhappuch was the third daughter of Job and can mean 'child of beauty' (Job 42: 12-15)
