Texas Stars: Media Notes TONIGHT’S MATCHUP Fresh off an overtime victory against the Rockford IceHogs, the Texas Stars (14-9-2-1) take the ice for a morning contest against the Chicago Wolves (15-9-2-1). The matchup at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois is the third contest of eight between the Central Division clubs. Each team took a win during the previous meetings and enters the morning with two points separating the teams in the standings. PLAYERS TO WATCH - Texas: The last time Erik Condra took the ice at Allstate Arena, he left the ice with a career best five points (2-3=5) against the Wolves on Dec. 2. The winger leads the Stars offense with 31 points (14-17=31) which also ranks second in the AHL behind Chicago’s Brandon Pirri. - Chicago: Despite playing only 21 games this season, Daniel Carr is second on the Wolves roster with 31 points (13-18=31) and tied with Condra for second in the league scoring race. Carr’s missed time was due to an NHL call up with Vegas but returned on Dec. 5 and has rattled off 10 points in the last five games (4-5=10). LAST TIME OUT - Texas: The Stars topped the Rockford IceHogs in overtime 3-2 on Saturday as the team continued it's road trip. After recording a season high 52 shots on net, Adam Mascherin net the game-winning goal in overtime. Both Erik Condra and Joel L'Esperance notched their team leading 14th goals for the Stars to tie the IceHogs in the third period and force the extra period. Philippe Desrosiers earned his second win of the year with a season high 32 saves. The win earned the Stars seven victories in the last nine games. - Chicago: The Wolves earned their fifth straight victory with their second win over Tucson in 24 hours on Sunday. Chicago was led by two goals from Brandon Pirri at Allstate Arena during the win, while forwards T.J. Tynan and Daniel Carr and defenseman Zach Whitecloud also tallied goals. Goaltender Max Lagace recorded 33 saves in the victory. HOME ON THE ROAD Captain Justin Dowling has been comfortable away from the Stars home arena this year. The forward has earned 13 points away from home and has earned a point in 10 of the 11 road games he has played this year. The Cochrane, Alberta native is riding a 10-game point streak away from home, the longest stretch by any AHL skater this year. POWER PLAY BUMP Texas has thrived this season when the power play has been on track. The Stars have earned a 12-5-1-1 record when scoring a power play goal this season. The club’s second ranked power play at 27.7% has recorded 31 goals on the man advantage and leads the Western Conference. The Wolves power play is also a one of the best in the West, ranking second in the conference and fourth in the AHL at 22.2% and 28 power play goals. FIRST TIMERS The Stars top two rookies Joel L’Esperance and Adam Mascherin are among the best first-year skaters in the AHL. L’Esperance leads the league with 25 points (14-11=25) while Mascherin is tied for fifth best with 21 points (12-9=21). The Stars are the only team in the AHL with more than one player represented in the top-20 rookie scorers and are the top two rookie goal scorers in the league. The last time the Stars had a top-10 rookie scorer in the league was Jason Dickinson who finished his first AHL season with the seventh best total of 53 points (22-31=53) in 73 games SHOOTING GALLERY The Stars offense ranks second in the AHL with a 3.88 goals per game average. Coincidentally, Texas is bested by only the Chicago Wolves, who have scored 105 goals and sit with a 3.89 goals per game average. Texas has turned 818 shots on net this year and are coming off a 52 shot outing against Rockford. Texas’ 12.3% shooting percentage is one of the top five success rates in the league. Adam Mascherin has been the Stars most dangerous shooter, scoring his 12 goals on just 44 shots (27.3%). BOTTLE-NECKED Through 26 games, Texas has averaged only 27 shots against per game. The limited shots against ranks fourth best in the AHL and also led goaltender Philippe Desrosiers to make a season high 32 saves against Rockford on Saturday. Texas has been outshot only six times this season and is 10-7-1-1 when leading in shots at the final buzzer. The Stars have also not been out shot while on the road this season.
