THURSDAY, 16 MARCH, 2017 TIARA TAKES CHAMPION HK INTERNATIONAL SALE A >STAR=-STUDDED AFFAIR by Alan Carasso CHASE CROWN For many years a part of the festivities of Hong Kong International Races week, officials at the Hong Kong Jockey Club took a decision in 2014 to push the sale forward a few months, reasoning that the extra time could do a world of good for the young horses. The auction is unique, as it is exclusive to members of the Hong Kong Jockey Club and will take place with cocktail party-esque glitz and glamour in the Sha Tin parade ring Friday evening (Hong Kong time) beginning at 7:45 p.m (7:45 a.m ET--click for a live webcast). Though the sale has had its fair share of marquee results down the years, including G1 Hong Kong Mile winner The Duke (Aus) (Danehill) (HK$1.6 million purchase) and world champion and treble Hong Kong Mile hero Good Ba Ba (Lear Fan) (HK$1.7 million), >TDN Rising Star= Pakistan Star (Ger) (Shamardal) could take the event to new heights this weekend. Supasundae (GB) was bred for those high summer days at Epsom, Ascot and Goodwood. Plan A didn't quite work out: Supasundae was bought in at 195,000gns when failing to reach his Book 1 reserve at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and, two years later, he was bought for a now scarcely believable ,5,000 at Goffs UK as an unnamed and unraced gelding. Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.

THURSDAY, 14 MARCH 2019 QUORTO INJURED, GUINEAS OFF THE TABLE ALTIOR AS BRAVE Group 1 winner Quorto (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has sustained an AS HE IS BRILLIANT injury in Dubai where he was wintering and will miss the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Godolphin announced on Wednesday morning. The Godolphin homebred >TDN Rising Star= is undefeated in three starts to date, including the July 14 G2 Superlative S. and the Sept. 16 G1 National S. when last seen. He was one of the leading fancies for the first British Classic of the season, which will take place over Newmarket=s Rowley Mile on May 4. AUnfortunately Quorto has suffered a soft tissue injury in training in Dubai which will mean he will have to miss the 2000 Guineas,@ said trainer Charlie Appleby. "It's a real shame as we had high hopes for him this year. We'll know more when he's scanned for a second time in a couple of weeks. It's too early to say when he could be back in action but we've been here before with these injuries and we'll see how he recovers." Altior & Nico de Boinville | Racing Post by Emma Berry CHELTENHAM, UKCIt takes a great horse to win championship races, but it takes a true champion to fight his way back for glory just as it looks as if he is beaten. At Cheltenham on Wednesday, the remarkable Altior (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) claimed not just his second G1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase but his fourth win at the Festival and his 18th consecutive victory to equal the winning streak of one of the track's great heroes, Big Buck's (Fr) (Cadoudal {Fr}).

  • Cheltenham Festival Winning Profiles 2017
Cheltenham Festival Winning Profiles 2017 (Races to be run Tuesday 14th March to Friday 17th March) www.againstthecrowd.co.uk Page 2 Key trends point to Festival winners The Cheltenham Festival represents the pinnacle of National Hunt racing. The G1 Championship races that take place at the venue every March are designed to find the best horses in specific divisions of the jump racing game. • The Champion Hurdle run on the Tuesday is designed to find the best 2-mile hurdler. • The Queen Mother Champion Chase is designed to find the best horse over the bigger obstacles at the minimum distance of 2-miles. The race is run on the Wednesday of the Festival • On Thursday Cheltenham Stages the Stayers’ Hurdle designed to find the best staying hurdler over a trip of 3-miles. • Thursday also plays host to the Ryanair Chase – a race which has become a Championship event for chasers specialising in a trip of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. • On the Friday of the Festival, we have the Gold Cup – the staying chasers’ Championship event run over 3 miles and 2 furlongs. These races are difficult to read. All the most talented horses in each division – at least those which are fit – tend to show up. All the major yards are represented. Every single runner is trying. Nothing is being saved for another day. The championship races are invariably run at a red-hot pace. This, in combination with the specific demands of the track, means that only horses at the top of their game, horses tuned to the moment and horses in receipt of luck in running, can prevail on the day.

  • Keighley Hoping for a Good Forecast As Maximum Field Goes to Post in £150,000 Betfair Exchange Trophy Handicap Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday
Betfair Media Release For immediate release, Thursday, December 21, 2018 Keighley hoping for a good Forecast as maximum field goes to post in £150,000 Betfair Exchange Trophy Handicap Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday The G3 Betfair Exchange Trophy Handicap Hurdle (3.35pm) takes place at Ascot this Saturday, December 22, day two of the Christmas Racing Weekend, and has attracted a maximum field of 21 runners. Each-way bettors can look forward to a festive treat with Betfair paying SIX places. Boasting a prize fund of £150,000, the two-mile contest is the second most valuable handicap hurdle run in Britain – only the £155,000 Betfair Hurdle at Newbury is worth more. Jolly’s Cracked It (Harry Fry/Noel Fehily, 11st 12lb) heads the weights as he chases a second victory in the Betfair Exchange Trophy Handicap Hurdle. The nine-year-old dead-heated with Sternrubin in 2015 but has been lightly-raced since. However, he showed he clearly retains plenty of ability when successful by six lengths over the course and distance in the Coutts Handicap Hurdle on November 23 and is the 6/1 favourite with Betfair. The regally-bred Forecast (Martin Keighley/Conor Shoemark, 10st 6lb, 18/1) is a full-brother to the 2008 G1 Sprint Cup heroine African Rose and also hails from the family of this year’s impressive G2 Coventry Stakes winner Calyx. Forecast joined Martin Keighley’s Gloucestershire yard in 2016, having previously been in France with Criquette Head-Maarek. Following wind surgery over the summer, Forecast has shown much improved form this season and was last seen out when recording a very impressive 15-length success in a handicap hurdle over just short of two and a half miles at Lingfield Park on November 13.
