Smith The potential for a learning society 291 LIST OF CONTRIBUTORS 295 vii 9 CHAPTER 1 EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT: AN OVERVIEW The 1984 Conference of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia took as its theme "Education, Training and Emp]oyment", and said: This year the conference will address the difficult but timely question of how the three tertiary sectors might most appropriately respond to an uncertain future in which the major restructuring of employment opportunities raises fundamental questions about the purposes of tertiary education. The theme implied that the conference would look beyond tertiary education itself to the relationship between industry in the widest sense and the foms of educational preparation which claim to serve it. To this end we directed a great deal of effort in the pre-conference months towards inviting the participation of employers, professional sccieties and other interested parties, but with quite limited success, as the affiliations of the contributors to this volume will show.We

TSA released a statement on the decision at the request of the US-Cuba Trade and Economic Council. TSA explained that In-Flight Security Officers (IFSOs), also known as federal air marshals, play a crucial role in aviation security. The agency plans to continue to work with Cuba to expand the presence of IFSOs on flights to and from Cuba. “This agreement will strengthen both parties' aviation security efforts by furnishing a security presence on board certain passenger flights between the United States and The Republic of Cuba,” TSA said in the statement, adding, “IFSOs serve as an active last line of defense against terrorism and air piracy, and are an important part of a multi- layer strategy adopted by the US to thwart terrorism in the civil aviation sector.” Commenting on the announcement, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, warned that despite the presence of federal air marshals on flights between the two countries, Americans traveling to Cuba remain at risk.

ESSAY LEGALIZING MARUUANA: CALIFORNIA'S POT OF GOLD? MICHAEL VITIELLO* In early 2009, a member of the California Assembly introduced a bill that would have legalized marijuana in an effort to raise tax revenue and reduce prison costs. While the bill's proponent withdrew the bill, he vowed to renew his efforts in the next term. Other prominent California officials, including Governor Schwarzenegger, have indicated their willingness to study legalization in light of California's budget shortfall. For the first time in over thirty years, politicians are giving serious consideration to a proposal to legalize marijuana. But already, the public debate has degenerated into traditional passionate advocacy, with ardent prohibitionists raising the specter of doom, and marijuana advocates promising billions of dollars in tax revenues and reduced prison costs. Rather than rehashing the old debate about legalizing marijuana, this Essay offers a balanced view of the proposal to legalize marijuana, specifically as a measure to raise revenue and to reduce prison costs.

I hope all families enjoyed a safe and relaxing holiday. It was wonderful to see so many smiling and eager faces arrive last week, particularly our new Kindergarten students and our new children in Years 1-6. A very special welcome to all our families. Being a parent is a special job. One of the many aspects of parenthood is that you are your child’s first teacher. In joining St Michael’s school community you enter into partnership with your child’s teacher as together you share a common goal—a happy and successful school year for your child. Parents and teachers are partners in helping each child develop to their full potential. I encourage all parents to become involved in the life of the school where at all possible. Teachers welcome helpers in the classroom, sporting events and excursions. Please note at any time you enter school grounds during the day, you need to report to the school office first. You must not go directly to classrooms. A reminder that all parents who wish to assist in any capacity at the school need to have completed the online Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta child protection training and undertaking.
