MUSIC WEEK 8 NEWS Special Guest: Tyshawn Sorey in Chamber 176 Date: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 Time: 1:00 pm PDT Tyshawn Sorey completed his DMA in Composition in 2017. In fall 2017 he became an Assistant Professor at Wesleyan University. Sorey is an active composer, performer, educator, and scholar who works across an extensive range of musical idioms. As a percussionist, trombonist, and pianist, Tyshawn has performed and/or recorded nationally and internationally with his own ensembles and with artists such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Coleman, Butch Morris, Peter Evans, Misha Mengelberg, John Zorn, VijayIyer, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lehman, and Tim Berne, among many others. “A LOT OF DIFFERENT STREAMS”: QUESTIONING “JAZZ” AND COMPOSING BEYOND GENRE BY JASMINE LOVELL-SMITH A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Victoria University of Wellington 2021 ABSTRACT “A Lot of Different Streams”: Questioning “Jazz” and Composing Beyond Genre Many composers currently prominent in the jazz world draw upon multiple musical traditions or genres to create their work. The varied compositional activities of composers Nicole Mitchell, Tyshawn Sorey and Wayne Horvitz problematize attempts to classify their work as belonging to a single genre. Drawing on my interviews with these three composers and my analysis of selected works, I seek to understand how they conceptualize their compositional work and its relationship to the various musical traditions that have influenced them. Using Fabian Holt’s genre framework and George E. Lewis’s concept of the Afrological as critical tools, I propose that the work of these composers prioritizes spontaneity and agency, foregrounding process and transformation instead of a more fixed work concept, and claiming a mobility of practice that connects them strongly to the legacy of the AACM. I also use these concepts as ways to reflect on my own creative work developed throughout the DMA, and my relationship to the genre label of jazz. The creative portfolio developed as part of this research incorporates influences from multiple streams of music-making, particularly the traditions of jazz, creative music and Western classical music. The submitted works include Cerulean Haze, for jazz octet and 5-piece chamber ensemble (13:00); Sanctuary, a suite in three movements for 11-piece ensemble (18:49); “Noche Oscura” for 10-piece ensemble (6:48); “Moorings (Titahi Bay)” for chordless jazz quartet (6:00); “Jimmy,” “Nuevo Azul,” “Neither Here nor There” and “Metamorphosis” for improvising quartet.

Awards & Recognition Flow In for Composer/Pianist Vijay Iyer The Pianist & Composer Sweeps 60th Annual Down Beat International Critics Poll Winning An Unprecedented 5 Categories in the Same Year; Chosen As A Member of Inaugural Class of Doris Duke Artists; Wins Pianist of the Year at 2012 Jazz Journalist Awards In an unprecedented series of wins, jazz pianist/composer Vijay Iyer has been honored in five categories of the 2012 Down Beat International Critics Poll, including Jazz Artist of the Year, Jazz Album of the Year (for Accelerando), Jazz Group of the Year (for the Vijay Iyer Trio), Pianist of the Year and Rising Star Composer. No other artist in the 60-year history of the magazine’s poll has ever taken five titles simultaneously. Iyer appears on the cover of Down Beat’s August 2012 Critics Poll issue. Adding to this “quintuple crown,” last Wednesday, June 20, 2012 the Jazz Journalists Association honored Iyer with the title Pianist of the Year at their 16th Annual Jazz Awards ceremony in New York City. Iyer was previously named Musician of the Year in the 14th Annual Jazz Awards. These critical successes come in the wake of April's news that Iyer was chosen as one of the inaugural recipients of the Doris Duke Artist Award, alongside veteran musicians Bill Frisell, Don Byron, and Meredith Monk. A new initiative of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, this honor includes an unrestricted multi-year cash grant of $225,000, plus additional targeted support for retirement savings and audience development. Earlier this year Iyer was also named the winner of the Greenfield Prize, a $30,000 multidisciplinary award previously bestowed on visual artist Sanford Biggers and celebrated playwright John Guare.

Michael Dessen & The Michael Dessen Trio [october 12. 2008] [8pm] [mandeville recital hall] [ucsd] Musicians: Michael Dessen - trombone, computer, composition Christopher Tordini - bass Tyshawn Sorey - percussion Program: Tonight's program will be roughly one hour of mostly continuous music, with no intermission. About the Michael Dessen Trio: I first formed a trio with this instrumentation in 2005. I wanted an ensemble that could weave among the riches of cyclic, polyrhythmic flow, but take equal delight in hue, grain, and abstraction. Tyshawn and Chris are extraordinary musicians who play with great precision and nuance, and are fluent with many kinds of compositional material, from complex temporal structures and contrapuntal lines to graphic scores and electronic collage. For me, composing for and with this trio is partly about bringing those kinds of diverse models into dialogue. Equally important is that they listen and think compositionally, prying open whatever I bring to reveal new possibilities. Like most musicians, I compose partly to amplify something ineffable inside, and compositional choices I make alone (even if we're never really alone) are part of my tool kit. But the past half century has produced a staggering array of improvisational musics that revel deeply in another aspect of the craft: using compositional structures not only as shorthand to bring certain sounds to life, but also to spark, jostle and nourish intensely collaborative acts of imagination.
