29th February- Leap Year

A leap year is a year in which one extra day has been inserted at the end of February and has 366 days, rather than 365. The extra day is added every 4 years to bring the solar year of 365¼ days into line with the calendar year of 365 days. Hundreds of years ago the leap year day, 29th February, had no recognition in law and was ‘leapt over’ or ignored – hence the term ‘leap year’.

The 29th February is the one day of the year when, traditionally, women can propose to men, perhaps because the day had no legal status in the past. This tradition goes back to an old Irish legend. In the 5th century a nun named St Bridget asked St Patrick if women could have a more active part in choosing their husbands. As a result, women were allowed to propose to men once every four years.

So, single ladies of Woodnesborough, now is your chance! You never know, he might even say yes!

Village Hall Events Updates

The Woodnesborough Village Hall’s Christmas Fair was held on Saturday 30th November and was an amazing success. We made over £1,000.00 which included a £30.00 donation. The money has helped us purchase a Projector for the Village Hall which has just been installed and we will soon be holding film afternoons for everyone to attend. We had a great selection of stalls and there was something for everyone. Santa and his elf paid a visit to the hall and there were lots of happy children.

Big thanks to everyone who helped, had stalls, donated raffle prizes and bottles for the bottle stall. And thanks to Sophie and Jasmine who kindly donated all the money taken on the face painting stall.

WOODNESBOROUGH OLD SCHOOL BELL

(Appeal on behalf of Woodnesborough Village Hall Committee)

The old School Bell has now come out of storage and restored to its former glory and now hangs in the New Village Hall.

It was made in a Liverpool Bell Foundry in 1844 and in-between that date and the present we only have a few snippets of information from its life but if anybody can add to these it would be most helpful to enable us to record its life so far.

Any information please to:-

Geoff Ball, 20 Elmwood Park, Woodnesborough.

Notes from St Mary’s

As we enter a new year, it is traditional to make New Year’s resolutions – to make for ourselves commitments which we seek to honour and keep as the year unfolds. They provide chances to put past problems behind us and look to the future with a renewed optimism seeking to embrace the opportunities it brings.

New Year’s resolutions often relate to fitness or diet, and apparently gym memberships treble in January; but a new year can also be a good time to take stock of all aspects of our lives and make new positive changes going forward.

As we enter 2020, there is perhaps a particular poignancy given that we begin a new decade as well as a new year (unless we take the very purist view that the decade will begin in 2021!) What changes or commitments do we want to make as we start 2020 and enter this decade?

Whatever our views, the issue which will be increasingly pressing upon us is that of climate change. The scientific community tell us that, by the end of 2020, carbon emissions must begin to flatten out if the rise in global temperatures are to be kept below 1.5oC. Who knows what the future will bring, but I suspect that generations to come, looking back, will reflect on this decade as defining in whether or not we had been able adequately to address global warming and its associated concerns.

I suppose I am, like many, doing my bit as an individual to reduce my impact on the earth. I cycle or walk rather than drive if feasible; I keep heating down; I reuse bags, recycle plastics and try to keep waste to a minimum; I rarely fly in aeroplanes and try to use public transport; I limit my meat consumption. I am not any great shining example, and there is much more I could and should do; but equally we should never underestimate the impact of our small actions and never think that little things don’t matter. We can all play a part and we all must play a part.

However, it seems to be increasingly apparent that, important as our individual actions are, a much greater and more comprehensive response is necessary. I am well aware that there are ‘climate sceptics’ who cast doubt on the apocalyptic scenarios being forecast by some, and that there is a danger of over-stating the dangers, but even at the more moderate end of the scale, scientists are suggesting that we are facing ecological disaster and immense human suffering if we fail to keep the rise in global temperatures below 2oC. We do seem to be running out of time, and surely there has to be a huge encouragement to politicians to take the urgent steps which are needed. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who found himself compelled by his faith to take political

10 action in Nazi Germany, said ‘not to act is to act’. Similarly, in the face of a climate crisis, we surely have a duty to make a stand against short- sightedness and indifference and encourage and implore those with the means to take decisive action.

I think Christians, in particular, have a duty to respect and nurture God’s creation: and in the face of a collapse in biodiversity and man-made global warming, we cannot sit back and allow this continued game of risk with our planet’s future to be unchallenged. The repeated mantra of recent times has been ‘Get Brexit done’. There is a more pressing and urgent task now which we need to ‘get done’, and we must not allow our Governments to be distracted.

As a small response, the churches of Eastry and Woodnesborough Benefice have started a Green Heritage Group to explore ways that as a community we can respond to some of the environmental changes we face. The Green Heritage Group meets monthly on a Sunday afternoon in the Five Bells to examine how we can act together to make a difference. Please look out for notice of future meetings and come and join us.

In the meantime, our collective mind-set must be defined by hope rather than despondency or fear. David Ridley

Poem of the Month

Chestnut Breeze

As the gold light dims, And day is soon to die, The horse is still brimming with wonder, Calmness hung in his eye.

He grazes softly below studded stars, With his flawlessly arched neck, The clip-clop of his feet, Towards the meadow, where the chickens peck.

Stood a girl, lone as the moon, She starts with joy, her decaying gloom, Has scarcely passed for the moment, She strokes his neck, He sniffs and snorts, head close to hers.

They are trapped in the clock, Their souls adjoined, Hearts galloping into her melancholic sunset, Forevermore.

Woodnesborough Parish Council

The Parish Council met on 10th December 2019, our last meeting of the year. The minutes of the last meeting on 22nd October were read and any actions arising from them were noted as necessary. There were 5 planning applications to consider and 3 of these had been reviewed by the councillors between meetings, we discussed the other 2 and objected to one of them. We had received one planning decision which was for the conversion of the Charity public house to 4 self-contained flats and 2 flats in a separate building to the rear.

Our District Councillor updated us on changes to the police inspector personnel and also changes at DDC in the planning department.

There is a Village Hall Open Day on 25th January and I hope some of you will have taken the opportunity to let the council know what you would like to see happen to improve the village. If you didn't manage to get there you can still let us know your ideas by speaking to one of us at any time or even pop along to our meeting and speak to us.

Our next meeting is on 28th January and it is open to members of the public, so why not come along.

Snowdrops

“Already now the snowdrop dares appear The first pale blossom of th’unripen’d year”

Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743 - 1825) The Snowdrop

Snowdrops, seen on our front cover photo, are a welcome sign that spring is on its way, poking through the ground with their bobbing white blooms when hardly anything else is in flower. Their Latin name Galanthus nivalis means ‘milk flower of the snow’. Traditionally Christians dedicate this pure white flower to the Virgin Mary and snowdrops used to be scattered at the church altar on Candlemas Day (2nd February). Snowdrops are a symbol of hope and the beginning of something new.

Woodnesborough Gardeners Club

The quiz night will be held at the Village Hall on Thursday 20th February, with a prompt start of 7.30pm. At the time of going to press, we still have room for a couple more tables. There will be an optional fish and chips or chicken and chips supper (veggie option available) and you should bring along your own drinks. Please phone me on 01304 812373 to book a table, or if you wish to join a table.

You may have noticed some raised beds have appeared in the fenced off garden area behind the Village Hall. The Gardening Club is organising this and they will be planted up with shrubs. There is also an area for use by the Mother and Toddlers Group, which will consist of a covered sand pit and two small raised beds for growing seeds. The Gardening Club are funding and carrying out this work, but we would like to install some benches in the area, which will be available to all users of the Hall. If you would like to donate a bench, perhaps in memory of a loved one, or a business or organisation in the Village would like to do this, please phone me on the above number.

Woodnesborough WI

We have had 2 meetings since the magazine last came out. Our first meeting on 11th December was our Christmas party - what a long time ago that all seems. Our President Liz Spanton welcomed us all and we dealt with our normal business quite quickly. We then had our party and there was lots of food, everyone had provided something delicious, and Liz provided the wine and soft drinks. Rae supplied a quiz with a Christmas theme and it was quite hard until you knew the answers!!! There was no letter competition, but we had a raffle. We also had a secret Santa with the limit set at £1 which is our normal entry fee and the presents were a lovely selection of surprisingly innovative ideas and really super presents. The meeting closed at 9.05pm and a happy band of ladies wended their way home.

Our next meeting was on 8th January, and Liz welcomed us all and wished us all a happy new year. The minutes of the December meeting were accepted and signed. There were no matters arising and after the financial report, Rae gave the correspondence. There are some very interesting outings and talks coming up and we have now been allocated a dedicated WI advisor which will be useful in the future.

We then arranged some tables and got down to the real fun part of the evening, a beetle drive ably controlled by Don Martin. It was great fun, but we sometimes got muddled as to which winners and losers were to rotate but Don did his best to control us all among much laughter. Our very grateful thanks to Don for giving up his time and for so ably helping us to play.

We had tea, coffee and biscuits and held the raffle. The letter competition was the letter 'S' and was won jointly by Mary and Brenda.

The meeting closed at 9.05pm.

If you're free on the second Wednesday of the month, why not pop along and visit us. We're a very relaxed group and fun and laughter are frequent parts of our meetings.

Birdwatching with Big Nick

Often all anyone sees of a kingfisher is a sudden flash of electric blue as they fly away, but at it is possible to get really good views although even this requires a lot of luck. I have been on numerous occasions trying to get a good photo but I have failed every time. Recently however I was rewarded by some superb views just outside one of the hides. If you can’t get to Stodmarsh, keep your eyes open anywhere there is water, I’ve seen them on the Stour in Sandwich, Worth marshes and of course in harbours. Look on low branches overhanging the water or other suitable perches from where they can fish.

Also at Stodmarsh I was very fortunate to see quite a rare bird, a glossy ibis. Presumed to be the same bird, it had been spotted at both Stodmarsh and Worth at different times. I saw it flying from some distance, losing height as if to land, but I was too far away to see where. As I walked in the direction of Grove Ferry I spotted it, in a field very close to me. I only managed a couple of photos before it flew off but it was a very fortunate encounter. They usually live in the Mediterranean region but are occasional visitors to the UK.

Glossy Ibis Buzzard

26

Nearer to home, look for buzzards in the field that borders Venson Bottom - the road leading from pond towards . For the last few weeks there have been as many as 14 there, probably feeding on worms. They are usually very timid and fly off if you pay them any attention, but again, with luck you can get some good views. This isn’t the first time they have favoured this field, similar numbers were seen there in 2015, but I didn’t notice them during the intervening years?

Well, it’s a new year and the days are getting longer, what will 2020 bring I wonder? Nick

Age Concern Sandwich is making a difference

The last thing we would wish to do is to blind you with science or statistics, and - not wishing to blow our own trumpets (too much) - we want to tell you about some of our successes in 2019.

Throughout the year Age Concern Sandwich increased the number of befrienders to 28 which means that we have now provided nearly 900 hours of companionship during the year, thereby helping reduce the feeling of loneliness and social isolation that so many older people experience.

In addition, our Meals on Wheels service, which is still developing, has provided nearly 2300 freshly prepared and cooked hot meals, which has been achieved with the regular assistance from 19 of our volunteers who deliver the meals.

The demands on Age Concern Sandwich are constantly growing and evolving, and so we are always on the lookout for new volunteers, because with more volunteers we can help even more clients. If you have a little time to spare and would like to find out about joining our friendly team to assist with our befriending service or help deliver hot meals please contact Gill Ball on:

07735556811 or email [email protected].

We look forward to hearing from you.

About Us

Woodnesborough Village News strives to provide accurate and timely information about local events, contacts for local companies or simply where to buy some firewood! We are a non-profit making organisation whose underlying purpose is to help maintain a vibrant cohesive community spirit. As such it is vital that it truly reflects the voice of Woodnesborough and we welcome items from all village organisations and individuals.

Woodnesborough Village News is produced and distributed by volunteers with financial support provided by a partnership of St Mary’s Church, the Village Hall Committee and the Parish Council. This combined with the additional funding provided by advertising, enables us to offer the magazine free to the community.
