2018-2019 Regular Record: 8-9 (4th in OUA West) OUA Playoff Record: 0-1 (lost to Queen’s in OUA quarter-final)

A year that began with plenty of excitement and optimism quickly turned into a massive challenge for the unlucky Gryphons. ’s talented roster, featuring all-star players like Kendrick Kerr and Zach Newman, was impacted by a series of significant injuries that forced head coach Cal Wigston to move pieces around and put his athletes in brand new roles. Kerr would go down for the season, as would heart-and-soul player Sam Nothnagel, among other losses. Oliver Hissink started the year as the setter but he was needed elsewhere, so rookie Gideon Dresser took over the important role, while Newman moved from his traditional left side over to the right. There were some blips along the way but the Gryphons responded and ultimately put together a fantastic five-game win streak that included a 3-1 upset of the powerhouse Queen’s Gaels at the GGAC on Jan. 18. That run was critical in securing a playoff berth as Guelph struggled down the stretch, losing its last five games. But the resilience the team demonstrated throughout the season reemerged in a thrilling OUA quarter-final matchup with the Gaels. The Gryphons went down two sets but courageously rallied to force a fifth on the Queen’s home court. Guelph fought off six match points and even a had a couple chances to pull off the shock upset but the Gaels scratched out a 23-21 win in the fifth to advance before ultimately claiming the OUA championship. Newman, who was playing injured, finished his final season with 144 kills. He joined emerging second-year star Zarko Ubiparip (team-high 168 kills) as a Second- Team OUA West All-Star, while Dresser was named to the OUA West All-Rookie Team.

2017-2018 Season Record: 8-9 (5th in the OUA West)

An OUA bronze medal last year gave the talented Gryphons the inspiration to reach even further in 2017-18. They began the journey with a fantastic new exhibition event, the inaugural Gryphons Men’s Volleyball Invitational, which gave head coach Cal Wigston the chance to not only test his players against the best programs in the country but also an opportunity to showcase the stunning GGAC. It was a fun kickoff to the season, though Guelph immediately had to deal with a scare to the team’s All-Canadian star Kendrick Kerr, who suffered a potentially serious knee injury in practice. The team won a straight-setter against Western in the OUA opener, but consistency was hard to find. Wigston took the team to Costa Rica for a successful exhibition tour in early January, though Guelph dropped three of four OUA games after that, including a difficult five-setter to Brock that was a blow to its playoff aspirations. There were certainly bright spots, like Kerr’s triumphant return, the growth of fourth-year outside hitter Zach Newman, and the debut of talented first-year player Zarko Ubiparip, who made the OUA West All-Rookie Team. The Gryphons won three of their last four matches, one of which was a sharp, straight-set performance over Trent on Senior Night. Joshua Green, David Duhan and Wigston’s son Kaj, three critical pieces to the program, were honoured in their final appearance on the GGAC court.

2016-2017 Season Record: 12-5 (2nd in OUA West) Playoff Results: 2-1 (OUA bronze medalists)

One season after finishing second last in the conference, the Gryphons men’s volleyball team put together a remarkable 2016-17 campaign that concluded with the team winning OUA bronze. The Gryphons finished 2nd in the OUA West with a 12-5 record and would defeat Nipissing on home court in the OUA Quarter-finals for the program’s first playoff victory in six years. The team ultimately fell one win shy of qualifying for nationals for the first time in 19 years following a 3-0 loss to Waterloo in the OUA Semi’s. The Gryphons would bounce back from that loss by defeating Ryerson in a thrilling five-set match to capture OUA bronze. It was the team’s highest finish to a season in seven years.

Third year middle Kendrick Kerr had a phenomenal 2016-17 season, culminating with him being named a Second Team All-Canadian. Kerr became the first Gryphon men’s volleyball player in six years to earn All-Canadian status. The 2016-17 season for the Gryphons also marked the year that the team moved into their new home court. After playing the first two home games of their season at the old W.F. Mitchell Centre, the Gryphs officially opened the doors at the new Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre on January 7, 2017 versus Brock. Despite dropping each of their first three games on their new home court, the Gryphs would catch fire to reel off five straight victories at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, including the team’s playoff win over Nipissing.

2015-2016 Season Record: 6-14 (10th in OUA) Playoff Record: N/A

For a fourth straight season the Gryphons failed to make the playoffs after finishing 10th with a 6-14 record during the regular season.

After a 1-6 start, the Gryphons were able to build momentum heading into the exam/Christmas break thanks to a three-game win streak with victories over RMC, York & Nipissing. The second half of the season was highlighted by an impressive win over the No. 9-ranked team in the country in the . On Friday, February 12 the Gryphons pulled off the upset over the Rams by winning in four sets and keeping the Gryphon playoff hopes alive.

However, in the team’s second-to-last game of the season, a shorthanded Gryphons squad traveled to North Bay to face Nipissing and suffered a hard- fought, five set loss to the Lakers which officially eliminated the team from the postseason.

Third year left side Josh Green led the team in kills (212) while second year standout Zach Newman led the team in scoring with 3.5 points per set.

Although Guelph failed to make the OUA playoffs, it was nevertheless a season in which a young Gryphons squad was able to accomplish some great things. After dropping their season opener, the Gryphons went on to an impressive six match win streak that resulted in them climbing into the national rankings. The Gryphons were ranked in the CIS Top 10 for four straight weeks in November (reaching as high as No. 8) – marking the first time in three years they had been ranked nationally (on Nov. 29th, 2011 they were ranked 10th). Fifth year middle Marc Wilson earned OUA Second Team All-Star honours after a tremendous senior season in which he finished sixth in the OUA in total blocks (66) and seventh in hitting percentage (.386) while first year standout Kendrick Kerr was named to the OUA All-Rookie team.

2011-2012 Regular Season: 9-9 Playoffs: Lost to Queens in OUA ¼ Finals

The Gryphon men’s volleyball squad finished sixth in the OUA after posting a 9-9 regular season record. Advancing into the playoffs, the Gryphons travelled to Kingston to take on Queen’s in the OUA quarterfinals. The Gryphons were eliminated from the post-season after losing 3-2 to the third- seeded Gaels. Set scores were 21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-13, 15-8. It was a tale of two semesters for the team. After getting off to a great start, the Gryphons broke the CIS top 10 in November after a successful 6-3 start to the season. Unfortunately, the Gryphons were plagued by a number of injuries to key players in the second half of the semester, resulting in the team dropping six of seven games to close out the regular season.

Once again, Winston Rosser (Whitby, ON) was a major presence for the Gryphons racking up 202 kills, 22 service aces, and the second most total points with 250 to earn his second straight OUA First-Team All-Star nod. This marks Rosser’s fourth OUA All-Star award.

2010-2011 Season Record: 15-5 Playoffs: 1-1

The Gryphon men’s volleyball team placed fourth in the OUA with a 15-5 regular season record. Advancing to the playoffs, the Gryphons hosted the Windsor Lancers for the OUA quarter-finals and battled it out in five games. Taking the first game, the Gryphons were then saddled with back-to-back losses. With the season on the line, the Gryphons came up with a two-point win over the Lancers to force a fifth game, in which the Gryphons doubled their opponents score 15-7. Moving on to the Final Four Tournament at Western, the Gryphons were matched against the host team who topped the OUA in the regular season. The Gryphons battled hard, but were only able to come up with a single victory in the semi finals, resulting in the conclusion of a great season for the team. While losing 3-1 to Western, the Gryphons showed great talent staying with the top-ranked team in the OUA and showing promise for the future.

Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont.) was a major presence for the Gryphons this season finishing second in the league with 4.4 points per game. Rosser amassed a whopping 260 kills and had 19 aces on the season, a performance good enough to earn him both OUA first team all-star honours, as well as CIS first-team All-Canadian status. James Stamler (North Bay, Ont.) was named a second-team OUA all-star after tallying 190 kills and 109 digs.

1991-1992 The Men's Volleyball team returned to the playoffs after an absence of several years by finishing the regular season with a 6-6 record. Their 4th place finish might even have been improved upon had it not been for a key injury in the middle of league play. They dropped their playoff match to eventual OUAA champion, McMaster, in the division semi final. James Schweyer was selected to the OUAA West Division All Star team. 1990-1991 The Men's team was quite competitive but found that the fifth and deciding game of matches, unfortunately, went the wrong way as they finished in sixth place in the West Division. 1989-1990 Graduation took its toll as an inexperienced Gryphon team played closely with West Division opponents but had trouble winning the close matches. The team missed the playoffs for the first time in a number of years with a 3-9 record. Virtually the entire roster is scheduled to return next season and as a result prospects are looking more positive. 1986-1987 The men's volleyball team had a successful season as they made the playoffs in the West Division finishing in 4th place. 1985-1986 The volleyball team had a 5-5 record in the tough West Division but an unfortunate eligibility problem prevented them from advancing to post-season play. However, Dave Guest was selected as an OUAA All-Star and the return next year of most of the team should mean a banner season. (* Denotes letter winner, ** Denotes first time letter winner).

1984-1985 A very young Gryphon team finished in third place in the OUAA West Division with a 6-4 record and gave league power- house Waterloo and Western tough battles through¬out the season. Newcomers such as Greg Hotte and second year man Dave Guest gave the Gryphons a strong base to build on for next season when they hope to battle for conference honours. 1983-1984 Once again, the volleyball Gryphons were among the league powers in the OUAA West Division but had to settle for third place in league play with a 5-5 record, For the third time in a row Guelph's Vilis Ozols was the leading vote-getter on the West Division All-Star Team. Guelph forced league Champion Waterloo to an exciting fifth game right in Waterloo where the Warriors have not lost in three years. With the addition of newcomers such as Dave Guest, the Gryphons should remain strong in the future. (* Denotes letter winner, ** Denotes first time letter winner).

1982-1983 Continuing their tradition as a top contender and entertaining squad, the volleyball squad ended second in league play - the Waterloo and Western match ups produced brilliant moments and full houses. The Gryphons were defeated in the fifth and deciding game of the semi-finals. Vilis Ozols led all vote getters on the all-star team. (* Denotes letter winner, ** Denotes first time letter winner).

1981-1982 The men's team had another strong season in a tough division going 6 - 4 on the year including an upset of nationally ranked Waterloo to knock them to second place. Waterloo gained revenge in the semi-final however, eliminating the Gryphons from further play. The Guelph side also had strong showings in tournaments, winning at Mohawk and playing well against some of Canada's top teams at Laval. 1980-1981 The Men's Volleyball Gryphons turned in one of the best efforts of the year, taking first place in the OUAA West Division with a perfect 10-0 record. Unfortunately, they ran into a tough Queen's team in the OUAA Play-off Tournament and were knocked from the championship side. They did however win the consolation final, good enough for third place in the province. Following the season, Tony TenWesteneind and Vilis Ozols were named Al1-Conference All-Stars, and Tony was later named to the first ever All-Canadian team. Doug Dodd was named Coach-of-the-Year in the OUAA West. (* Denotes letter winner, ** Denotes first time letter winner).

1979-1980 The men's team barely missed post season play in the last game of the last match of the regular season, ending up in third place.
