HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL 6TH TO 16TH JULY 2015 47TH SEASON

Programme and Information

Updated February 2015

Good news and high quality

We are proud to present the programme for the 47th season of Hindsgavl Festival, which we believe reflects some of the best the international world of classical music has to offer. We pride ourselves on being ahead when it comes to awards and general recognition, still this year our artists count amongst them two Sonning Music Prize winners, a pianist with an Oscar winning movie career and two winners of the Nordic Council Music Prize.

New this year is the festival’s own elite ensemble for selected conservatory students from the Scandinavian countries. A new summer tradition for years to come. News of a more practical kind is that there’ll be more leg room this year, since some of the concerts will be held in the barn which has been acoustically optimized for classical music.

This is going to be a good summer, and we look forward to seeing you at the castle. Side 2

HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL 2015 • Tlf. : 28141841 • Mail : [email protected] s. 3 MONDAY,JULY 6 2015: BRÖDERNA FRÖST This year the opening concert showcases the Sonning music prize winner 2014, clarinetist Martin Frôst. This is the third time the festival has the pleasure of Martin’s talent and this time with brother Johan who has returned to Sweden after a successful concert career in USA and Canada and is now lecturer of piano at Kungliga Musikhögskolen in Stockholm.

The end of the evening sees us in Composer’s Corner where a young Danish composer will share his view of where classical music is heading.

22:30 COMPOSER’S CORNER TBA ______j______TUESDAY, JULY 7 2015: SØRENSEN, STEEN-ANDERSEN AND THE NIGHT This is the closest we get to a ”Play Danish Day” at the festival this year, not focusing on the 150th anniversary of , who can be heard and celebrated elsewhere this year, but with two distinctive and very much alive Danish composers, who will both be present: Bent Sørensen (b. 1958) and Simon Steen-Andersen (b. 1976).

All works this day have the night as their subject as do many other works in classical music. In “Inszinierte Nacht” Simon Steen-Andersen has taken four classical night pieces as his starting point, liberating them from their corsets and staging them in a wholly new way – with humour and intelligence. ______

HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL 2015 • Phone : +45 2814 1841 • Mail : [email protected] p. 5 WEDNESDAY, JULY 8 2015: IAN BOSTRIDGE AND JULIUS DRAKE There is no Hindsgavl Festival without the special discipline song and piano – and this at the highest level with English tenor Ian Bostridge accompanied by Julius Drake. Ian has just released his very fine and much praised book on Schubert’s Winterreise, and we are sure he can be convinced to sign a copy if you bring it to the festival.

In the afternoon a young clarinet trio with musicians we are certain will be important profiles in the future. Clarinettist Jonas Frølund has already been awarded P2’s talent prize in January 2015. ______

HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL 2015 • Phone : +45 2814 1841 • Mail : [email protected] p. 6 THURSDAY, JULY 9 2015: CONCERTO COPENHAGEN The first four days of the festivals see a veritable swarm of Sonning Music Prize winners, first Martin Fröst and today the prize winner from 2007, Lars Ulrik Mortensen. With the fantastic Concerto Copenhagen the programme can best be described as ”extreme chamber music from the 17th century for strings plus cembalo”.

We close the evening with half an hour with composer Martin Stauning (b. 1982), who introduces his own works. This promises to be exciting as well as unpredictable.

HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL 2015 • Phone : +45 2814 1841 • Mail : [email protected] p. 7 SUNDAY, JULY 12 2015: SOLO PIANO AND A NEW CLARINET QUINTET Since all artists at Hindsgavl Festival live at the castle they literally are artists in residence. This year the British pianist Steven Osborne plays a total of three concerts and can as such be called artist in residence of the year. In the season 2013-2014 Steven had a residency with Wigmore Hall, London, which, like this evening, began with a Beethoven solo programme, which will not be forgotten any time soon. "... poetry in sound, absolutely astonishing" (from The Guardian's five star review).

Following its premiere in France in May 2015 Rune Glerup’s clarinet quintet has its Danish debut during the festival. While working on the piece the usually very modest composer sent a text to the festival leader “I think this is going to be something special”. And as special works often gain by repeated listening we have decided to perform it twice during the festival. This night for an “unprepared audience” and the following morning for an “enlightened” audience after an introduction with the opportunity to ask questions about the work, the composer and the writing process.

HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL 2015 • Phone : +45 2814 1841 • Mail : [email protected] p. 8 MONDAY, JULY 13 2015: RANGE AND LATE ROMANTICISM In Quatuor Diotima the festival has once again found a fabulous, relatively unknown French string quarted. At the festival in 2011 and 2011 Quatuor Modigliani created a veritable sensation with their first performances in , and they now return regularly.

This Monday Quatuor Diotima demonstrate their wide range, with one foot in the very new music and one in the not so new. A conscious artistic choice, which may not be common but which enriches and enlightens both genres.

The morning begins with Glerup’s clarinet quintet, which is performed for the second time this Festival after an introduction and a discussion with the audience. The first performance was the night before.

We will rest our ears until the evening’s double concert, tied together by the great, German soprano Juliane Banse with the late romantic repertoire, she has made her own. Schönberg’s beautifully expressive string quartet no 2 can indeed be said to bridge the gap between late romanticism and the new atonal world.

Juliane Banse will close the evening alongside Malcolm Martineau in a late romantic lied programme. We are a quite proud to be able to present two lied accompanists as distinctive as Malcolm Martineau and Julius Drake (July 8) in one season.
