UFC on Fox 17 Recap ” Dos Anjos Stops Cerrone in 66 UFC on Fox 17 Recap " dos Anjos Stops Cerrone in 66 Seconds" Author : Robert D. Cobb In what has been a bad month and year for UFC World Champions, Rafael dos Anjos managed to become one of the few champions to be able to retain his title with a big win on Saturday in Orlando, Fla. against challenger Donald Cerrone. He successfully retained his lightweight championship by stopping Donald Cerrone on strikes in just 66 seconds. The champ caught Cerrone just seconds into the fight with a hard straight left hand, followed up by several vicious shots to take the early advantage. Dos Anjos then followed it up with a perfectly placed knee to the midsection that backed Cerrone toward the cage. The aggressive champion continued to apply the pressure with a left kick to the body that badly hurt Cerrone. Cerrone covered up against the cage as dos Anjos poured it on in an effort to finish. The Cowboy tried to hide but couldn't handle the pressure of the onslaught of Dos Anjos who took him down seconds later and continued to throw hammer fists at Cerrone, who was on his knees covering his head until referee Herb Dean jumped decided to stop it. Rafeal dos Anjos who was making his first title defense was thrilled after the win and had this to say in the cage with Joe Rogan, "I'm so happy because I proved I'm here to stay. It's just the beginning. I have the best team and I am surrounded by so many great people." In what seemed to be the common theme of the night, dos Anjos called out newly crowned featherweight champion Conor McGregor. After McGregor stopped long-time featherweight champion Jose Aldo a week earlier at UFC 191 in Las Vegas, he said he would be interested in facing the winner of the dos Anjos- Cerrone bout for the title. It appears that he will now have his chance. Rafeal dos Anjos didn't mince words when it came to the Irishmen "Conor McGregor, if you want to come to the lightweight division, know that this is my division," he said. "You should stay at featherweight. I will fight you in Brazil. I will go to Ireland to face you." Elsewhere on the card, in a very boring two round affair, with little to no action, Alistair Overeem managed to land one key punch right on the chin of Junior dos Santos to knockout the former champion in the final seconds of the second round. Nate Diaz found the winners circle for the first time in two years with a tactical three round unanimous 29-28 decision win over the red hot Michael Johnson. Diaz attempted to call out McGregor but decided to fill his 24 second post fight interview with constant swearing to the point that none of it could be aired on the Fox broadcast. Miles Jury was also hit by the upset bug with his shocking second straight loss, this time at the hands of Charles Oliveira by first round guillotine chose submission. Charles Oliveira missed weight on his first attempt at the weigh ins, coming in at 150.5 lbs. He was given additional time to make the weight limit, but made no attempts to cut further. Instead, he was fined 20 percent of his fight purse, which went to Myles Jury. This marked the third time that Oliveira missed weight in his UFC career. Nate Marquardt continued his up and down stint with the UFC by knocking out CB Dollaway 28 seconds into the second round. The once promising Dollaway appears to be on his way of getting cut from the UFC very soon. This was the 17th card on FOX since it's debut in 2011, and also the last of 2015 for the UFC. 1 / 1 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

  • Bums and Bimbos: Persuasive Personal Attack in Sports and Political Discourse
Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 8 (2017): Bums and Bimbos Bums and Bimbos: Persuasive Personal Attack in Sports and Political Discourse Martha S. Cheng Associate Professor Rhetoric and Writing Department of English Rollins College Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 8 (2017): Bums and Bimbos “I just feel they’re bums. 95-percent of the game is bums…” --UFC Featherweight Champion, Conor McGregor “Fox viewers give low marks to bimbo @MegynKelly… ” --2016 Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump Despite terms like “verbal warfare” and laments over our “argument culture,” accusation and attack have received scant scholarly attention compared to their counterparts, apology and defense. Perhaps this neglect is due in part to there being few formal speeches of attack while those of apology from individuals, corporations, and governments abound.1 To address this imbalance in research, Benoit and Dorries devel- oped a taxonomy of attack strategies, providing tools by which scholars can analyze and evaluate the effec- tiveness of persuasive attacks.2 Legge et al. 3 and Legge and DiSanza’s4 work have extended that taxonomy. Benoit and Dorries explain, “once a persuasive attack establishes guilt to the satisfaction of the audience…there may not be much to be gained from further developing the target’s guilt.”5 Therefore, they focus on the act of wrongdoing rather than blaming or simply attacking the target’s character. Yet, even cursory attention to news and enter- tainment media reveals a ubiquitous form of persuasive attack focused on the target’s character: the persuasive personal attack. Not surprisingly, such attacks are commonly heard in sports where opponents “trash talk” to goad each other with insults, hoping for a psychological advantage in a game, and in politics where those campaigning for office routine- ly attack their opponents for character flaws.
