    The Unexpected and Influential Berggruen Gallery May 2019 Barely a stone’s throw from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I recently discovered Berggruen Gallery, a three-story art gallery with bright and airy windows. The unusual setting immediate piqued my interest, as most galleries prefer to wall over the windows to create studio lighting. Walking past the location on my daily trek to work, I am able to catch glimpses of sculptures and paintings inside the sparely decorated building. Finally my curiosity gets the best of me and I decide to use my lunch hour to explore the unique space. My first impression of the gallery with its natural-colored woods and simple white walls is that it feels welcoming and friendly. Although I walk in without an appointment, the receptionist enthusiastically greets me and encourages me to explore the space. As I wander around, my eye is immediately drawn to a split staircase on my right. When I look downstairs, I can sense a large cavernous space beneath me, and glancing up at the soaring ceilings, I can make out a few pieces on the upper landing. It creates the sense that the entire building is open and transparent. While I’m there, I have an opportunity to speak with Gretchen Berggruen, who owns the gallery along with partner and husband John Berggruen.     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WAYNE THIEBAUD October 16 – November 28, 2020 Berggruen Gallery is honored to present Wayne Thiebaud, an exhibition of paintings, works on paper, and prints from 1961 to present by one of the preeminent living American artists, Wayne Thiebaud. This show marks the gallery’s seventh solo exhibition of Thiebaud’s work since his first show with John Berggruen Gallery in 1973. The gallery is especially proud to hold this exhibition in honor of two very special occasions: Wayne Thiebaud’s 100th birthday and Berggruen Gallery’s 50th anniversary. Wayne Thiebaud will be on view October 16 through November 28, 2020. Spanning six decades, Wayne Thiebaud highlights the artist’s most quintessential, significant, and compelling work from the near entirety of his career. Thiebaud is most often recognized for his delectable still life paintings of confections, from slices of pie arranged in rows to bakery cases filled with intricately decorated cakes to dishes of colorful lollipops and candies. With paint as thick as frosting, Thiebaud’s illustrative depictions emphasize his subject matter’s physicality. Ornately decorated, densely outlined, and starkly shadowed, Thiebaud’s treats sit for the viewer masterfully rendered and enticing. Though the artist rose to prominence for such paintings, Thiebaud is now renowned for a vast breadth of subject matter—steep and winding cityscapes, saturated expanses of the Sacramento Valley, and attentive portraiture of friends or everyday figures. Art critics have connected his work to a breadth of art movements, analogizing his figurative work to that of esteemed American painter Edward Hopper and his aptitude for still life painting to that of 18th century French artist Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HELEN FRANKENTHALER September 26 – November 9, 2019 Berggruen Gallery is proud to present Helen Frankenthaler: Paintings, an exhibition of paintings from 1953–1978 by one of the preeminent artists of her time, Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011). This presentation continues a history of exhibiting Frankenthaler’s work on the West Coast, dating back to her first Bay Area show at John Berggruen Gallery in 1972. Helen Frankenthaler: Paintings will be on view September 26 through November 9, 2019. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, September 26 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Spanning three decades of Frankenthaler’s career, this exhibition includes some of the artist’s most significant and evocative paintings, highlighting the evolution of her artistic practice in the ways she translated the world around her. The artist did not follow stringent rules of painting, but instead employed a pioneering soak-stain technique that ultimately created new parameters and possibilities. Frankenthaler invented this method of painting by pouring and brushing heavily diluted paint onto unstretched, unprimed canvas. The distinctive process creates ethereal pools of floating color. The effect is almost translucent, more closely resembling watercolor than her actual mediums of oil or acrylic. Soak-staining acknowledges the very flatness of the canvas itself, yet it also produces the illusion of depth and space. Frankenthaler’s paintings are emphatically non-representational, yet her work is often rooted in an evocation of landscape. While certain works in the exhibition render the raw and unparalleled beauty of earthly forms, others simply reveal atmospheres of color that seem to serendipitously dance across the canvas.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture MARCH 2008 John Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture, an exhibition of new and historical works by a selection of prominent and emerging artists. Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture will occupy both floors of gallery space and will include work by artists Stephan Balkenhol, Jose Bedia, Los Carpinteros, Mark di Suvero, Jim Dine, Tom Friedman, Al Held, Anton Henning, Damien Hirst, Y.Z. Kami, Albert Oehlen, Nathan Oliveira, Martin Puryear, George Rickey, Joel Shapiro, Kiki Smith, Robert Therrien, and Rachel Whiteread, among others. Highlights include Jose Bedia’s bronze sculpture Gibaro en fuga (Gibaro in flight). Gibaro is a Spanish term denoting the offspring of a Spaniard and an Indian, and hints at both the multicultural background of Bedia’s birthplace, Cuba, as well as the artist’s affiliation with the Palo Monte religion. Palo Monte places importance on the idea of the “Indian” as an indigenous and mystical symbol and in divination rituals calls for the utilization of shells and disks (similar in shape to that of Gibaro en fuga) made of various materials, animal, plant or other. For Bedia, however, this gibaro also fits within his tendencies to depict the "common-man" in various journeys across the boundaries of space and time. José Bedia was born in Havana, Cuba in 1959. He graduated from the Escuela de Arte San Alejandro in Havana, in 1976 and from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba in 1981. Bedia emigrated to the United States in 1993. He currently lives and works in Miami, Florida.

The eagerly awaited, relocated and reconceived Berggruen Gallery opens this week with an exhibition on a tried-and-true theme. “The Human Form” may be paper-thin conceptually, with the intellectual weight of a high school essay. Sensuously, though, it’s a show that will buoy you up and float you away. 10 HAWTHORNE STREET SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 94105 WWW.BERGGRUEN.COM TEL 415.781.4629 At last count, there were 66 works in the show, by 36 artists; four days before opening, the numbers were still shifting slightly as staff adapted to the new space. All are superb examples of their type: one or another formal variations on images of the body. Forget the thesis — as an exhibition, it’s little more than a catalog of types and categories. Taken individually, however, virtually every work is a museum-worthy example. Galleries are private affairs, and the best such businesses are usually reflections of the owner’s personality. John Berggruen and his wife and partner, Gretchen, are personalities worth reflecting. They are the embodiment of the idea of taste, and the new space and the works inside it have a rare, quiet elegance that seems out of a bygone time. And if there is a name synonymous with “art gallery” in San Francisco, it is the Berggruen Gallery.
