The Focus-Abengoa Foundation celebrates the 22nd edition of the master concerts series in the chapel of the Hospital de los Venerables • The series entitled, “The baroque organ: a means of communication between peoples”, will be given by Guy Bovet, Paolo Crivellaro and Carolyn Shuster, three eminent and admired European organists. • These annual performances, which feature the world’s most respected organists and composers, have made the Los Venerables organ one of the most important and prestigious platforms in the world. Seville, 4th February 2013.- Tomorrow Tuesday 5th February, the Focus-Abengoa Foundation will open the 22nd edition of the master concerts series, which has become an essential event in the diaries of the world’s finest organists. The new series, entitled The baroque organ: a means of communication between peoples will feature Guy Bovet, Paolo Crivellaro and Carolyn Shuster, three brilliant and well-known organists who have studied at some of the most important schools in the world. The first concert will be on Tuesday 5th February and will be given by Guy Bovet from Switzerland, a renowned organist who was titular at the Colegial de Neuchâtel church in Switzerland until 2009. On Tuesday 12th February, the baton will be handed over to the Italian, Paolo Crivellaro, professor of organ at Universität der Künste , Berlin’s university of the arts. Finally, Tuesday 19th February will be the turn of the Franco- American organist and musicologist, Carolyn Shuster, renowned for her clear and precise technique. The repertoire chosen by the organists includes works from their countries of origin designed to showcase new cultures, styles and musical influences. -

When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing. -

Bios of RED SPRING Curating the End of the World Contributors RED SPRING is dedicated to living legend, Algernon Miller, a Father of Afrofuturist Art. Ekpe Abioto Ekpe (pronounced “eck-pay), a “musical philanthropist” and artistic director of GENIUS UNLIMITED, who specializes in children’s music and cultural entertainment. Since his career began in 1974, his motivational learning workshops on self-esteem, creative thinking, conflict resolution, drug prevention, and gang awareness have been well received by students, teachers, and administrators. As a musician, producer, recording artist, songwriter and arts educator, he plays African instruments such as the djembe drum, kalimba (thumb piano), shekere, and others, flute and saxophone. He gives entertaining and educational performances at schools, churches, festivals, colleges and universities, and is currently promoting his two CD’s entitled, “I AM A GENIUS” and “THE SPIRIT OF AFRICAN MUSIC.” His interactive music video “DON’T TOUCH A GUN” has been recognized and used as an effective means of keeping guns out of the hands of children. He is a part of The African Jazz Ensemble, a 10-piece band made up of some of Memphis' finest musicians. They've played together for over 40 years, and members have toured the world with Michael Jackson, Al Green, BB King, Eric Clapton, the Dells, Luther Allison, and Rufus and Carla Thomas. They formed the African Jazz Ensemble as a way to incorporate African influences into more traditional jazz, soul and R&B. Linda D. Addison is one of the most honored speculative poets of all time. Over the course of more than 300 published poems, stories and articles, Addison has been awarded the Horror Writer Association’s Bram Stoker Award six times. -

Allegro Vivace (1844-1937) Janet Yieh serves as Associate Organist at Trinity Church, Wall Street in New York City where she plays daily services, directs the St. Paul’s Chapel Choir and works closely with the music and liturgy departments. An innovative concert recitalist and sacred music specialist, Janet was named one of ‘20 under 30’ to watch by The Diapason magazine in 2017. She has performed concert tours throughout the United States and across the globe, with highlights including New York’s Alice Tully Hall, Washington’s National Cathedral, Yale University’s Woolsey Hall and Japan’s Momoyama St. Andrew’s University Chapel. She has collaborated with the Paul Winter Consort, the Washington Chorus at the Kennedy Center, and Trinity’s NOVUS NY orchestra at Carnegie Hall. She regularly premieres new works for the organ, and has been featured on the national radio show Pipedreams, New York’s WQXR, New Jersey’s WWFM, Connecticut’s WMNR, and two CD recordings. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Janet’s former teachers include Thomas Murray, Paul Jacobs, John Walker, Wayne Earnest and Victoria Shields. She holds a Master’s of Musical Arts Degree and Master's Degree in Organ Performance from the Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music and a Bachelor of Music from the Juilliard School. -

The importance of “Common Sense” in regards to the American Revolution has been researched and debated by historians, political scientists, and literary scholars. While they acknowledge that Paine’s ideas and writing style helped to popularize the idea of separation from Great Britain in 1776, a thorough analysis of the entirety of Paine’s philosophy has yet to be completed. Modern scholars have had great difficulty with categorizing works such as, The Rights of Man, Agrarian Justice, and Paine’s Dissertation on First Principles of Government. Ultimately, these scholars feel most comfortable with associating Paine with the English philosopher John Locke. This thesis will show that Paine developed a unique political philosophy that is not only different from Locke’s in style, but fundamentally opposed to the system of government designed by Locke in his Second Treatise of Government. Furthermore, I will provide evidence that Paine’s contemporary’s in the American Colonies and Great Britain vehemently denied that Paine’s ideas resembled those of Locke in any way. -

CHRIST & S AINT STEPHEN ’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH SCHOENSTEIN ORGAN g 2008 g DEDICATORY CONCERT SERIES g FROM THE RECTOR g AN OLD ADAGE SAYS THAT GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS. We have had reason to ponder this wisdom at Christ & Saint Stephen’s Church over the past four years. What began as disaster has blossomed into blessing, and we are reminded once again that the grace of God is frequently unpredictable… and always abundant. Our beautiful pipe organ represents the culmination of an extensive restora- tion of our church, and is its crowning glory. But the genesis of this historic project came not after years of planning and study, but on an ordinary weekday evening in May 2004, when a portion of our church ceiling collapsed. Investigation that revealed a dangerous and inadequate substructure required the complete demolition of our 19th century ceiling. Discovered in the midst of the rubble, like decorated eggs found on Easter morning, was lovely stenciling from the original 1876 walls. This inspired our vestry to commit to a complete restoration of our interior. And since plaster dust filled the pipes of our old, ailing organ, which experts pronounced “not worth cleaning,” we undertook the challenge of replacing it. The financial realities of such a project were daunting for a parish our size and we give thanks that many friends and neighbors have helped this dream come to life. A list of contributors is included in this booklet and we are grateful to them all. It is indeed a great pleasure to present the first organ ever to be built in the great City of New York by Schoenstein & Co. -

His extensive use of tone rows and permutations throughout the entire score helped to create the diegetic world so integral to the success of the filM. GoldsMith’s formative years prior to 1967–his training and day to day experience of writing Music for draMatic situations—were critical factors in preparing hiM to meet this challenge. A review of the research on music and eMotion, together with an analysis of GoldsMith’s methods, shows how, in 1967, he was able to create an expressive twelve-tone score which supported the narrative of the filM. The score for Planet of the Apes Marks a pivotal moment in an industry with a long-standing bias toward modernist music. iii For Mary and Bruno Gassi.
