The Greater Columbia Organist May 2015 A Publication of the Greater Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists MAY PROGRAM Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. Ebenezer Lutheran Church 1301 Richland Street Columbia SC 29201 On Friday, May 15, the Patrons and Friends of the Arts at Ebenezer and the Greater Columbia AGO Chapter will join forces to present Michael Ging and Sarah Łysiak in concert at Ebenezer Lutheran Church. This concert will be a sneak preview of the concert which the duo will perform for the L'organo Series of Piccolo Spoleto on May 24 at the Cathedral of John the Baptist in Charleston, SC. Along with soprano Sarah Łysiak, Michael will be performing “Triptych on Poems by Robert Bridge,” a piece which Tom White, Cantor at Ebenezer Lutheran, was commissioned to compose for the duo by New Hope Lutheran Church in Houston TX. The premier of the work took place on February 13 in Texas. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Michael David Ging is the Organist-in- Residence at New Hope Lutheran Church in Missouri City, Texas, and is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music where he studies organ with Dr. Robert Bates and conducting with Dr. Betsy Cook Weber. An experienced performer, Mr. Ging is privileged to perform throughout much of the United States as a solo artist, in festivals such as the renowned Piccolo Spoleto Festival, and as soloist in organ concertos by Howard Hanson, Daniel Sigmon, and Ryan Gagnon. In performance competitions, he has received first prize in the 2008 Richard Van Sciver Organ Competition and the 2014 University of Alabama Organ Competition, a prize which afforded him the opportunity to be a featured performer at the 2014 University of Alabama Piano and Organ Festival. A strong advocate for new music, Mr. Ging has premiered compositions by Daniel J. Knaggs, Ryan Gagnon, and Daniel Sigmon. He appears on the 2013 release Daniel Knaggs – A New Spring Time by ECCE Recordings. Mr. Ging holds the degrees of Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and Master of Music from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Sarah Łysiak, Director of Choral Activities at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas, is currently in her first season as a member of the Houston Grand Opera Chorus, and maintains an active teaching studio. Ms. Łysiak is a graduate of the acclaimed opera program at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music and received her undergraduate training from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Ms. Łysiak resides in Houston and studies with Rice University professor, Barbara Paver. 1 Please send information for June’s newsletter to [email protected] by May 20. APRIL MEETING On April 13, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, sixteen chapter members enjoyed a presentation by Monica Harper from Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church in Savannah, Georgia. Ms. Harper holds the doctorate from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where she studied organ with Marilyn Keiser and Chris Young. In addition to her church position, she is the Chorus Master for the Savannah Philharmonic. The program was entitled “Congregational Song: Paraphrases of the Psalms by Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley.” Members were asked to write their own paraphrases of Psalm 117. The group enjoyed hearing the results of the assignment as members read or sang their newly created hymn texts. Kudos to our talented AGO members! Preceding the program, a catered meal was served in the fellowship hall and a brief business meeting took place. At this Chapter (General) Meeting, a financial report was received from Nancy Kelley, treasurer, and a recap of the programs of the year was given by the Dean. The members voted on and unanimously approved the adoption of the revision of the chapter’s Policies and Procedures document. The culmination of a two-year project, this document represents a great deal of hard work and long hours by committee members Susan Sturkie, Bill Bates, and Frances Webb.
