President’s Report Although the precise details are now fading from memory, I still recall conversations I had 3 or 4 years ago with my fellow board members about celebrating our 75th anniversary year anniversary. With such an important landmark on the horizon, how should we celebrate? In the end we settled on a marketing campaign as well as holding celebratory events throughout the year beginning on September 28, 2013, which was precisely 75 years to the day when our letter patents were signed. This was in effect KWSC’s birthday. We would then hold celebratory events, roughly once per month, until the 2013-14 KWSC Awards Gala, which takes place this Sunday, June 22nd. That’s 9 months of partying, which sounded pretty good!

Even back then, we knew that this season would mark a very special time of celebration. But who could have imagined that the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club would be soaring to the heights of achievements we reached this year. Our athletes performed spectacularly on the world’s stage including the Junior World Championships, the World Championships, and even the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Congratulations to our world and Olympic competitors and medalists Mary and Phelan, Kaitlyn and Andrew, and Kirsten and Dylan. You have made us so very proud. We also received an outpouring of support and accolades from our local community, national media, the Western Ontario Section, , and our friends at the City of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener offices. My sincere thanks to all of you for all that you have done to support our organization and our skaters. I hope that you know that your actions are not just about supporting skating. KWSC is about much more than that. Yes, we support sport and fitness for the youth of Kitchener and Waterloo, but we also strive to teach valuable life skills such as focus, goal setting, and perseverance. Our mission is to “Inspire a lifelong passion for excellence through skating”, and we hope that passion for excellence has a long-lasting impact on all aspects of our skaters’ lives. This is important work, and I am grateful to our hardworking coaches, staff and volunteers for their contributions to this important task.

I want to thank the KWSC Board of Directors for time and dedication this past year. They have continued to play an important governance, oversight, and strategic planning role to support the long-term success of KWSC. I had the privilege of recently hearing about Skate Canada’s new strategic plan both in formal presentations, and during informal conversations with Skate Canada President Leanna Caron. There are wonderful things happening at the level of our national association. You can read about them in Skate Canada’s annual report, which is available on the Members Only website. I am pleased to see that our own strategic initiatives already align reasonably well with Skate Canada’s new direction. In the near future your KWSC leadership team will continue reviewing and developing our own strategic plan to ensure we are well positioned to benefit from the innovative and positive changes that are happening at the national level.

On that note, I would like to welcome to the KWSC Board of Directors our newest Directors: Anders McKenzie, Alison Smerchinski, Ken Stark, and Melinda Kunhegyi. I very much look forward to working with you on the board next year. I also thank our retiring Directors: Irene Earl, Jodie Hancox-Meyer, Jennifer Musselman, and Rebecca Babb. Thank you for your dedication and invaluable behind-the-scenes service to KWSC!

It has been my pleasure serving as your club President during this landmark 75th anniversary year. What an incredible year it has been! Happy birthday KWSC.

Paul Mallet, President Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club

2013-14 Executive Directors Report

I am so very privileged in my role to work with Board members and volunteers who bring such passion to our organization. In years gone by, typical volunteers in not for profit sports organizations were primarily parents of the athletes. Changes in family demographics with the increase in two parent working families and single parent families have resulted in our traditional volunteer base declining, making it harder to provide some of the “extras” for any athlete. I am encouraged however with the emergence of a new type of volunteer, specifically the “twentysomething” former KWSC skaters who are giving back to their club. We are fortunate to have these competent young people who are serving on our Board of Directors; organizing things like our Sectional Sendoff, Gala and Freeskate Festival events; helping out with Ice Show; and greeting new members at our CanSkate welcome tables. They truly are our future and in this our 75th year it is nice to know that we will have new leaders emerge as we embark on our next quarter century of teaching children and inspiring a passion for skating in the KW community. I am also fortunate to have this job in skating, the sport which has captivated me all my life. This past year of the 75th anniversary has afforded our small but dedicated staff the chance to celebrate all that skating has brought to KW, to Canada and to the world! A highlight for me was the Olympic Sendoff event in January in which all our staff team volunteered their personal time to put this great event on for Kirsten and Dylan and the KW community. A month later, we came together as a KWSC community to watch from our lobby, “MTM” do their very best at on the biggest sport stage in the world! The many additional 75th activities brought us in close contact with volunteers, alumni, coaches, skaters and their parents where we learned about the past, celebrated the present and looked to the future for the next generation of skaters and volunteer leaders.

Amidst all this extra effort and celebration we also had the day to day and seasonal operations to execute and with the input of our skating experts we did it with creativity and vision. This year we implemented a Singles Discipline leadership team. This team has provided guidance to our coaches and skaters, developing and leading programs and training methodologies to build a strong learning system to improve our singles skating success. We were thrilled that International and Olympic coaches Kris Wirtz and Michelle Leigh agreed to head up this first year of a multi-year plan. I am proud to say that the team spirit and excitement they have created this past season in the competitive program has been infectious and a joy to watch. They have also directly impacted the curriculum at some levels of the STAR skate program and we plan to continue this work next year. In all it has been a very busy, rewarding and at times tremendously exciting year for myself and our KWSC staff team. Thank you to my wonderful staff team, our committed coaching team, the hard working volunteers, energetic skaters and dedicated parents that embody our tagline, ‘passion lives here’ and make us the strong club we are that is set to launch far into the future. We are looking forward to some much needed and well- earned vacation time in the summer months to recharge our batteries and get ready for the 14-15 season. Cheers,

Marie Pringle, Executive Director Kitchener Waterloo Skating Club

Skating Programs Manager’s Report

The 2013/14 season was another amazing season in the life of skaters at KWSC. The celebration of our 75th year was combined with many special events locally as well as the thrill of watching our skaters compete close to home and on the biggest international stage.

Skaters at KWSC found themselves working hard in all our programs around the twin cities. We work closely with city staff in both Kitchener and Waterloo hosting skating programs in 11 different arenas throughout the twin cities. City staff, KWSC volunteers and KWSC administrative staff make it possible to provide skating programs of excellence in arenas convenient to our members as well as at our home at RIM Park. City staff assists our club in every aspect from ice booking, program advertisement and program delivery. KWSC sends a big thank-you to both cities and their continued support of “skating for life” in the KW area, special thanks to the staff at our world class home, RIM Park, under the leadership of Roseanne Toronchuk and her team.

KWSC is fortunate to have over 2000 members and some skating for maybe the first time, others competing in Sochi at the . We are optimistic that somewhere in our Learn to Skate programs the next Olympian maybe have laced up skates for the first time.

KWSC celebrated its 75th season and events started in September 2013 with an alumni dinner. It was exciting to see many faces from the past as they mingled with the skaters of today. Congratulations to all KWSC members, past and present on this celebration. I have enjoyed 28 years here at KWSC and have watched so many skaters that from test sessions to competition we all feel the pride.

KWSC hosted more than 10 test sessions over this past season with approximately 700 tests and an over 85% passing rate, congratulations skaters, families and coaches. The StarSkate program is the backbone of evening programming at KWSC and skaters in this program set goals, compete and test themselves against pre-set standards.

KWSC is a leader in recreational learn to skate programs, we have piloted the national learn to skate program and have helped refine program delivery for all of Canada. This program is based on movement, fun and achievement. Thank you to the coaching staff and volunteers for continuing to perform and excel.

KWSC had an amazing competitive season, we are all so proud of our Olympic medalists and World medalists and we beam with the same pride when we watch our skaters have their first competitive experience at our annual FreeSkate festival or at “Futures”. Good for all of you and congratulations to the families and coaches for another successful season. Special mention to Kirsten Moore-Towers, Kaitlyn Weaver, Dylan Moscovitch and Andrew Poje we all cheered so hard for you and are so very proud, club members joined in the lobby of RIM park and at Moose Winooski’s to cheer and support, we hope you could feel it because we were loud and proud! Both of these exception teams represented themselves, their families, Canada and KWSC with class and ease. Thank you skaters!

We are looking forward to our 76th season, so many new goals and new adventures are ahead. A forever thank-you to the many volunteers who run KWSC and the members and staff, 2014/15 looks like another great season.

KWSC Athletic Centre Report

It has been a year of changes at The Athletic Centre. With guidance and input from our new competitive singles leadership team the off-ice has continued to evolve with Long Term Athlete Development being a key consideration along with progressive development for all skaters over the course of a season. Data analysis on fitness testing has helped us to have a better understanding of the benchmarks for all of our skaters at every level with the goal for improvement for everyone. The importance of off-ice training has been continually reinforced by our leadership team throughout the season. We have been fortunate to introduce a number of our national level skaters as technical jump instructors for our junior star, enrichment and introduction to figure skating programs providing our skaters with quality instruction and our instructors with a valuable mentoring opportunity. We were fortunate to receive a positive response to our request for funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program providing funding for 30 hours per week for seven weeks to commence June 30th 2014 for one of our student supervisors, providing them with a valuable work experience and providing some salary support to our facility. With the buzz of the Olympic year we were able to launch a marketing campaign which offered $10 of every membership sold between December 1, 2013 and February 28, 2014 to help support our Olympians Kirsten Moore Towers and Dylan Moscovitch. The campaign helped to support their road to the Olympics and bring exposure to the Athletic Centre. With a new season starting we look forward to continually evolving to meet the off-ice training needs of our skaters for the benefit of all skaters.

Special Events The following are brief summaries of special skating events we host for our members:

75th Anniversary Events: To mark our 75th anniversary as a club we added some new events to the normal special events we offer each year, all were branded as part of our season long celebrations. These additional events included an Anniversary dinner in September (thanks to the Alumni committee for organizing), entering a float in the Santa Claus Parade in November (thanks to Martha D’Agostino and her team), an Olympic sendoff evening in January (thanks to the office staff for your extra work) and a CanSkate birthday party in March ( thanks to Sandi Chalhoub and your helpers). As well we received many stories in the local press and we had a rotating series of displays in our club information cases in the lobby (thanks to Sue Taylor and her team).

Adult Social Dance/Eistainzfest : The event was hosted at CFSC on Sunday March 29, 2014. It was this year’s 50th Anniversary of Eistainzfest for KWSC and we had over 50 participants, some new and many returning skaters.

Free skate Festival: A special "75th Anniversary Freeskate Festival" was held at the Carolyn Fedy Skating Centre on December 21st, 2013. Approximately 130 skaters representing several disciplines across a range of categories impressed the large audience. Skaters received feedback on their performances, and as usual the team event was a big hit. This year’s team event theme was “decades” in recognition of KWSC’s landmark 75th anniversary. Our amazing coach and volunteer team made sure the event ran smoothly. Overall it was a great way to conclude the fall season.

Gala: This event honours all the wonderful volunteers without whom our club could not operate in addition to the skaters’ accomplishments which we celebrate as a skating community. The affair was held on Thursday May 23, 2013 in the evening, which was departure from our usual Sunday afternoon event. There were many worthy recipients that evening with our top honour of Athlete of the Year going to Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch.

Ice show: The 75th Anniversary Ice Show on April 12, 2014 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex had several ambitious goals as the highlight of our anniversary year celebration. The overall goal of being the “Best Ice Show Ever!” was central in all our minds as we approached the job of celebrating 75 year of excellence. We shared our rich history with a show that travelled through the ages performed by Club Members from Learn to Skate to our Olympic Silver Medalists Kirsten Moore Towers and Dylan Moscovitch and our Olympians and World Silver Medalists, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje to Adult Skaters demonstrating our “Skate for Life” strength. It was important that participants on the ice, backstage, and in the audience felt the pride and excellence that enveloped our 75th year, and we delivered. We had just over 260 skaters show perform on April 12th at the Waterloo Recreation Complex to an audience of over 2000 with a volunteer crew of well over 100. We were very lucky to be joined by Alumni in all aspects of the show and the ice show provided a pathway to each individual’s memories while creating new ones to carry into our future.

Page 20

Rebecca Babb, Artistic Director and Choreographer, wrote in her letter included in our show program, “It’s a bit of a daunting task to wrap up creatively so much history in a two hour show”. The KWSC is very grateful for the perspective and care showed by Rebecca in the exceptional and professional delivery of our history on ice by amateur performers and crew. A spectator and parent reflecting on their experience with one word, “WOW”, summed it up eloquently! We enjoyed unprecedented support of our community through community partnerships, sponsorship and silent auction donations. We thank all our sponsors, and supporters in particular, our Platinum Sponsor: Figure Skating Boutique; our Gold Sponsors including M&T Printing Group, Rogers Kitchener Radio, Straight Street Services, Terry Howald Pools, and the Waterloo Region Record; our Silver Sponsors BDO Canada LLP, CMA Realty Ltd., Ernst & Young, KPMG, MS2 Productions, Oxford Learning Centres – Waterloo, RBC Dominion Securities, and Victoria Star Motors; our cities Kitchener and Waterloo; and the KWSC Trust. We invite everyone to view our 75th Anniversary Ice Show Magazine for the complete list of sponsors and supporters. The response from audience, parents, sponsors, volunteers, and participants has been overwhelmingly positive. I am just one volunteer who stood along so many others who made this show possible for our community. The many thank you notes like this one are our reward: “ My 2 girls … literally had the time of their lives. There is nothing a parent wants more than to see that kind of happiness sparkling in their eyes. I experienced that rare occurrence yesterday. I couldn't have been more proud and happy for them…It would be an honour to be part of the volunteer team!” I respectfully submit this report for the good of skating, Alison Smerchinski, Volunteer Ice Show

Sendoff Events: Western Ontario Sectional Championships Send-Off On Saturday October 26, 2013, we held a simulations and send-off event for approximately 50 skaters in preparation of the 2013 Skate Canada - Western Ontario Sectional Championships, held in Niagara Falls November 1-3, 2013. A group of KWSC volunteers led by Amanda Cooper organized team building activities for the skaters, while the parents participated in a discussion led by KWSC President Paul Mallet about the role of parents in competitive skating, followed by an update on the competitive singles program by KWSC coach and singles discipline consultant Kris Wirtz.

STARSkate Championships Send-Off On February 15th we held a very well attended simulations and send-off event for our skaters in preparation of the 2014 Western Ontario STARSkate Championships and Adult Showcase, held in Caledonia February 21-23. In addition to some great skating, we were treated to an inspirational and informative presentation by sport psychologist Dr. Kim Dawson entitled Sharpen More Than Your Skates: Reach Your Full Skating Potential. Dr. Dawson touched on several important topics including the identification of individual strengths as a skater, engaging in productive self-talk, building confidence, imagining what you want to happen, and controlling the body activation level. As a result of this very successful event we plan on offering additional sport psychology workshops in the future.

Alumni Annual Report

The alumni committee was tasked with co- coordinating our first event to celebrate the club’s 75th year. The committee organized yellow and blue balloons with the 75th logo and a 75th banner. These were used throughout the year’s activities. KWSC 75th Anniversary Celebration Dinner was held on Saturday September 28th 2013 in the Hauser Haus Room at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Over eighty members joined together to reminisce and reacquaint themselves with old friends, coaches and skaters. Following dinner we were fortunate to have Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje speak to us about how important the support is they receive from the club. Dylan Moscovitch and Kirsten Moore Towers joined us and we wished both teams well in their Olympic journey. Members of the alumni also decorated the display case in the foyer with an ever changing theme for the 75th. A long time member Bea Ziegler died this year on December 8th 2013 and condolences were sent to her family by the committee. Bea was 100 years old. Thank you to Paul Mallet for doing a notice on the web site.

Marilyn Johnny, Alumni Committee Chair

Coaching Committee

It’s hard to believe another year has passed by. It was one filled with excitement and change. Our season started with the addition of Michelle Leigh and the introduction of group competitive sessions. Coaches have gotten the opportunity to have brainstorming sessions with Michelle and Kris Writz and be a part of a team coaching atmosphere. If the atmosphere wasn’t exciting enough, we got to cheer on our colleges Kris and Kristy Writz as they took on the World at the Olympics, Worlds and Jr. Worlds. It was very exciting with incredible results at all three events. Our recreational programs were a huge success this year with the addition of another coach on sessions. This made instruction easier and more effective. On a sadder note we will be saying goodbye to a long time CanSkate coach Lois Jefferies. She has taught hundreds of children how to skate with incredible energy and a love of the sport and she will be missed. As the competitive season came to an end we headed to Albert McCormick for the beginning of our Spring school. Working in colder conditions and a smaller ice surface made us realize how wonderful our facility is! Many coaches volunteered hours to the ice show this year, which was a huge success! Without their help and energy the show would not have run smoothly. As we finish our 75th year Michael Farrington has become a part of the KWSC base coach family. He is a welcome addition to our incredible staff of knowledgeable competitive and recreational coaches. This is my last job as coaches’ representative this season. I have held this position for seven years and am now very happy to pass the torch along to Melinda Kunhegyi. She will be a wonderful addition to the Board of Directors and I wish her the best of luck. I would also like to say thank you to the Board for being such a giving group of people with the best interests of the skaters always being the focus.

Rebecca Babb, Coaches Representative
