In the King George, Elephant, and Nelson Islands, the collections were done in ice-free areas during the austral summers of years 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1994. In Hope Bay, the collections were done in the 2009 summer (February). All collections were deposited in the HCB (Chaves Batista Herbarium). Findings: The King George Area is the most diverse area and the Hope Bay has the lowest diversity stats. -

LAKUŠIĆ andBILJANA LJUBIĆ Institute of Botany, Faculty of Biology, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia Abstract – In the examined area, 165 taxa were found and identified: 139 taxa from the class Bryopsida and 26 taxa from the class Marchantiopsida. Nine species are red-listed in Serbia. Material was collected from 62 localities, which were analyzed for similarity of chorological and ecological features using the Jaccard similarity index. Analysis of floristic elements and phytogeographic distribution showed that the greatest number of taxa are temperate elements with Holarctic distribution. Results of ecological analysis showed that in regard to the substratum aspect, terricolous, basophilous, and indifferent species were dominant. In relation to the ecological parameter humidity, most species were mesophilous. The majority of identified bryophytes were sciophilous taxa. Admiralty Bay, King George Island
Measure 2 (2006) Annex Management Plan for Antarctic Specially Managed Area No.1 ADMIRALTY BAY, KING GEORGE ISLAND Introduction Admiralty Bay is an area of outstanding environmental, historical, scientific, and aesthetic values. It was first visited by sealers and whalers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and relics from these periods still remain. The area is characterized by magnificent glaciated mountainous landscape, varied geological features, rich sea-bird and mammal breeding grounds, diverse marine ecosystems, and terrestrial plant habitats. Scientific research in Admiralty Bay in post IGY times has been performed in a more permanent way for some three decades now. The studies on penguins have been undertaken continuously in the area for 28 years, and is the longest ever done in Antarctica. Admiralty Bay also has one of the longest historical series of meteorological data collected for the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the areas of the planet most sensitive to climate change. Admiralty Bay has become a site of increasingly diverse human activities, which are continuously growing and becoming more complex. Along the last 30 years, more stations were settled and have grown in area, and visitors increased in numbers per year, from a few hundreds to over 3000. Better planning and co- ordination of existing and future activities will help to avoid or to reduce the risk of mutual interference and minimize environmental impacts, thus providing an effective mechanism for the conservation of the valuable features that characterize the area. Five parties: Poland, Brazil, United States, Peru and Ecuador have active research programmes in the area. Poland and Brazil operate two all-year round stations (Poland: Henryk Arctowski Station at Thomas Point; and Brazil: Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station at Keller Peninsula). -

Bryophytes encountered by the Wildlands League along the Cat River system in north west Ontario July, 2002 Prepared for the Wildlands League Jennifer Doubt Devonian Botanic Garden University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2E1 i SUMMARY Bryophytes (small plants, including mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), though small in stature, comprise a significant proportion of biomass in the boreal forest and are integral to ecosystem function. This report documents bryophytes encountered by a Wildlands League (a chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society) expedition along a remote stretch of the Cat River through Ontario’s north west boreal forest, about 500km north west of Thunder Bay. This region would be affected by proposed changes to forestry legislation which would allow cutting of previously protected forests. Bryophytes were collected in an ad-hoc manner as permitted by the logistics of the trip. The following findings were made: 101 moss and 17 liverwort species were collected, demonstrating high species diversity. This number is quite high, considering the time available for sampling and the size of regional and provincial species pools. The list would certainly be significantly expanded by further attention to the area. Most species encountered on the expedition occur widely throughout the province, but two species, Tetraplodon mnioides and Pohlia sphagnicola, are considered to be northern species in Ontario. Three species tracked by the Ontario Natural Heritage Information Centre were encountered: Pohlia sphagnicola, Sphagnum contortum, Tetraplodon mnioides. Seven species were ranked ‘S3’ or higher, meaning that they are classified as by the Natural Heritage Information Centre as ‘rare to uncommon’. Very few collecting records of any species, regardless of rarity, exist for the area surveyed on this trip. -

Pipp Montana Natural Heritage Program, 1515 E Sixth Ave, Helena, Montana 59601 INTRODUCTION Montana has one of the richest recorded moss floras of the western United States (Eckel et al. 1997), even though large areas of the state remain under surveyed. The Flora of North America (FNA) volumes 27 (2007) and 28 (2014) include 1,402 species found in the continental United States, Canada, Greenland, and St. Pierre and Miquelon, of which 508 species have been recorded in Montana. Including varieties and subspecies, Montana has 522 moss taxa. The rich moss flora is due to the habitat and climatic diversity across the state and a long history of bryological exploration that began in the late 1800s. This checklist is a revision to the second preliminary checklist (Elliott 1993), which listed 408 taxa. The substantial increase in the number of moss taxa since 1993 indicates that, as in much of the western United States, our knowledge of the Montana moss flora continues to expand with increased field and herbarium studies. The discovery of mosses in eastern North America appears to be reaching saturation, but this is not true for western North America, where the accumulation of new species has continued to rise steeply over the last three decades (Carter et al. 2016). Another publication titled the “History, Biogeography, and Species of Montana Mosses (1880-2018)” will be published in Volume 36, Issue 2 of Evansia, a peer-reviewed quarterly of The American Bryological and Lichenological Society (2019). -

An Updated Checklist of the Mosses of Chile
Mosses of Chile 1 An updated checklist of the mosses of Chile Frank Müller Abstract: The distribution by regions and provinces is provided for each of the 890 moss taxa currently accepted in Chile. All records are supported by literature references, and the number of taxa recorded for each region is given. Synonyms with their owning taxa are intercalated alphabetically in the list. Introduction The last checklist of the mosses of Chile was completed in the end of 1996 and was published in 1998 (He 1998). Since this time a considerable bulk of new data on the mosses of Chile has been published. This provided the stimulus to produce a new checklist. The present study attempts an updated version of the checklist of He (1998) and contains all data available up to the end of November 2009. For a lot of families and genera of the area critical taxonomic revisions were published in the last years. This includes Amblystegiaceae (Hedenäs 2003, Ochyra & Matteri 2001), Bartramia (Fransén 2004), Campylopus (Frahm 2005), Fissidens (Müller & Pursell 2003), Grimmia (Muñoz 1999, Muñoz & Panda 2000), Hypopterygiaceae (Kruijer 2002), Lepyrodon (Allen 1999), Meesiaceae (Matteri & Ochyra 1999), Tortula (Cano & Gallego 2008), and Zygodon (Calabrese 2006). In addition, there is also a remarkable progress in the floristic investigation of Chile (Isla Navarino in province Antártica Chilena: Buck 2002, Goffinet et al. 2006; regions Tarapacá and Antofagasta: Cano 2003; the Los Lagos and Los Ríos regions: Frey & Schaumann 2002, Schaumann 2005, Larrain 2005, 2007, 2007b; Easter Island: Ireland & Bellolio 2002; the Bío-Bío region: Ireland et al. 2007; the Maule Region: Müller & Pereira 2006, Pereira et al. -
