    LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR An in-depth guide by Stu Lewis INTRODUCTION In Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (1857), Western literature’s prototypical “Desperate Housewives” narrative, Charles and Emma Bovary travel to Rouen to attend the opera, and they attend a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor. Perhaps Flaubert chose this opera because it would appeal to Emma’s romantic nature, suggesting parallels between her life and that of the heroine: both women forced into unhappy marriages. But the reason could have been simpler—that given the popularity of this opera, someone who dropped in at the opera house on a given night would be likely to see Lucia. If there is one work that could be said to represent opera with a capital O, it is Lucia di Lammermoor. Lucia is a story of forbidden love, deceit, treachery, violence, family hatred, and suicide, culminating in the mother of all mad scenes. It features a heroic yet tragic tenor, villainous baritones and basses, a soprano with plenty of opportunity to show off her brilliant high notes and trills and every other trick she learned in the conservatory, and, to top it off, a mysterious ghost haunting the Scottish Highlands. This is not to say that Donizetti employed clichés, but rather that what was fresh and original in Donizetti's hands became clichés in the works of lesser composers. As Emma Bovary watched the opera, “She filled her heart with the melodious laments as they slowly floated up to her accompanied by the strains of the double basses, like the cries of a castaway in the tumult of a storm.

    18 CONTEMPORARY OPERA AND THE FAILURE OF LANGUAGE Amy Bauer Opera after 1945 presents what Robert Fink has called ‘a strange series of paradoxes to the historian’.1 The second half of the twentieth century saw new opera houses and companies pro- liferating across Europe and America, while the core operatic repertory focused on nineteenth- century works. The collapse of touring companies confined opera to large metropolitan centres, while Cold War cultural politics often limited the appeal of new works. Those new works, whether written with political intent or not, remained wedded historically to ‘realism, illusion- ism, and representation’, as Carolyn Abbate would have it (as opposed to Brechtian alienation or detachment).2 Few operas embraced the challenge modernism presents for opera. Those few early modernist operas accepted into the canon, such as Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, while revolu- tionary in their musical language and subject matter, hew closely to the nature of opera in its nineteenth-century form as a primarily representational medium. As Edward Cone and Peter Kivy point out, they bracket off that medium of representation – the character singing speech, for instance, in an emblematic translation of her native tongue – to blur diegetic song, ‘operatic song’ and a host of other conventions.3 Well-regarded operas in the immediate post-war period, by composers such as Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, Francis Poulenc and Douglas Moore, added new subjects and themes while retreating from the formal and tonal challenges of Berg and Schoenberg.

    Parola Scenica: Towards Realism in Italian Opera ETDHendrik Johannes Paulus du Plessis A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD by Thesis Abstract This thesis attempts to describe the emergence of a realistic writing style in nine- teenth-century Italian opera of which Giuseppe Verdi was the primary architect. Frequently reinforced by a realistic musico-linguistic device that Verdi would call parola scenica, the object of this realism is a musical syntax in which nei- ther the dramatic intent of the text nor the purely musical intent overwhelms the other. For Verdi the dramatically effective depiction of a ‘slice of a particular life’—a realist theatrical notion—is more important than the mere mimetic description of the words in musical terms—a romantic theatrical notion in line with opera seria. Besides studying the device of parola scenica in Verdi’s work, I also attempt to cast light on its impact on the output of his peers and successors. Likewise, this study investigates how the device, by definition texted, impacts on the orchestra as a means of realist narrative. My work is directed at explaining how these changes in mood of thought were instrumental in effecting the gradual replacement of the bel canto singing style typical of the opera seria of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini, by the school of thought of verismo, as exemplified by Verdi’s experiments. Besides the work of Verdi and the early nineteenth-cen- tury Italian operatic Romanticists, I touch also briefly on the œuvres of Puccini, ETDGiordano and the other veristi.

It is our hope that you will be able to add this to your existing curriculum in order to expand your students’ understanding of opera, literature, history, and the fine arts.     Opera and Literature 1. What Irish playwright wrote the original version of Salome? A: Oscar Wilde Richard Strauss’ Salome: “Dance of the Seven Veils” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oVaIuMI0II While Strauss’ opera is set in German, Oscar Wilde’s Salomé originally is written in French. Strauss started composing the opera shortly after seeing the play and it premiered in December of 1905 at the Königliches Opernhaus in Dresden, Germany. It didn’t premiere in the US until February 1907 by the Metropolitan Opera. Salome was first performed by Cincinnati Opera 1948 and was last seen on our stage in 2000. 2. Lucia di Lammermoor was based on the book The Bride of Lammermoor written by this famous author. Who was he? A: Sir Walter Scott Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor “Mad Scene”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92jiitUEahg Premiering in 1835 at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the novel that it is loosely based on was published in 1819. The novel’s combination of war and feuds, plus the romance and mythology was the perfect inspiration for Donizetti for Lucia. Lucia di Lammermoor was first performed by Cincinnati Opera in 1921 and was last seen on our stage in 2008. 3. What America playwright/producer did Puccini gain inspiration from for at least two of his operas? A: David Belasco Puccini’s Madame Butterfly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTT5FlTvz4A David Belasco’s play is based on a short story by John Luther Long also titled Madame Butterfly. Puccini wrote different versions of the opera, the first one premiering in 1904 at La Scala, and then final one – the one we know most nowadays – in 1907 that premiered at the Metropolitan Opera.
