DOLE ANNOUNCES NEW SENATE CHAPLAIN

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole announced today that he would present the name of Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie to the full Senate for election as Senate Chaplain.

Dr. Ogilvie was recommended to the Majority Leader by a bi- partisan committee of Senators, chaired by Senator Mark Hatfield. Other members of the committee were: Senator , Senator , Senator Pete Domenici, Senator Sam Nunn, and Senator Dan Coats. The committee met over a period of months, screening more than 200 applications, and interviewing finalists.

Upon succeeding Dr. Richard Halverson, who is retiring after fourteen years as Chaplain, Dr. Ogilvie will become the 61st Chaplain in the 205 year history of the .

A native of Wisconsin, Dr. Ogilvie has served since 1972 as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, California. Dr. Ogilvie is the author of nearly fifty books, and is the host of the nationally syndicated radio and television program, "Let God Love You." Dr. Ogilvie's pastoral career also includes assignments at the Winnetka Presbyterian Church in Winnetka, Illinois, and the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Senator Dole said, "I am delighted that someone of Dr. Ogilvie's national reputation has agreed to serve as Senate Chaplain, and I thank the members of the selection committee for their outstanding work."
