Waikato Young Leaders Day

On Wednesday 6 July the Upper Middle School Leaders took a trip to Waikato University to take part in the Waikato Young Leaders Day.

We were involved with leadership enhancing activities, listening to guest speakers and interacting with other students from 33 school s across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. (In fact over 400 students attended). A few speakers that we would like to mention are: Maioro Barton, Niwha Jones and Nic Martin.

Maioro Barton is a young man who was born with Spinabifida. He talked to us about his journey, how to overcome obstacles and to be resilient. He lives by the quote; "Don't dwell on the disability, think about the possibilities."

Nipha Jones Was a local community constable who works with youth. He outlined how important it is to know yourself and know what you stand for.

Nic Martin: Is the drummer for the Kiwi band Devilskin. What he has accomplished in the music industry at such a young age is amazing. He encouraged us to always use the word 'yet.' "I can't do that...YET, I don't know how...YET."

The five Head Students from a range of high schools talked about their own leadership journeys. Some of the key things that we took away from them was: -Don't procrastinate Maioro Barton -It takes 6 seconds to make a good or bad decision -Don't over-commit to responsibility -Don't wait for change, be the change

We highly recommend this course for future Year 9 & 10 leaders as it was truly inspirational.

Knitting Club

On Wednesday 27 July three students from the schools knitting group were invited to represent Papamoa College in Judea for the annual Mission Without Borders meeting. The three girls, two of which came from the LMS and one from the senior block were accompanied by Mrs Naylor and Mrs Frost. We as a knitting group donated 10 blankets to The Mission without Boarders cause. Mission without boarders (Operation Coverup) is a group of people who come from around the Bay of Plenty to donate knitted or crocheted goods to this cause. The blankets get baled up and sent overseas with some volunteers , to be unpacked and given to family's in Eastern Europe who need them. We continue to keep knitting for this cause every year.

Inspriational Speaker

On Wednesday 27 July Heelan Tompkins came to speak to the Year 9 & 10's. She is a double Olympian; representing New Zealand in both Athens and Beijing for Equestrian.

Heelan has worked really hard to get to such a high standard. She has also had good people by her side to support her and help make miracles happen.

I learned that you have to try hard to be successful and you have to be kind. I also think that it is awesome to get out of your comfort zone and get to know others, make new friends and ask for help. I also learned about being resilient and not giving up. Heelan was inspirational and helped me to realise that anything is possible.
