ABSTRACT Freshwater crabs inhabit clean waters at a certain altitude. The upstream of Banjaran river which is located on the Mount Slamet has good physical and chemical conditions suitable for freshwater crabs. Research to determine a habitat of fresh water crabs according to altitude was carried out on the southern slopes of the Mount Slamet has find five species namely Geosesarma sp. at altitude 787 m asl., Malayopotamon lipkei at 286-800 m asl., Parathelphusa bogorensis at 105-195 m asl., P. convexa at 105 m asl., and Terrathelphusa sp. at 916-997m asl. A key to the species found in Sungai Banjaran is provided. Keywords: Elevation, freshwater crab, Gecarcinucidae, Sesarmidae, Potamidae. LARVAL GROWTH Edited by ADRIAN M.WENNER University of California, Santa Barbara OFFPRINT A.A.BALKEMA/ROTTERDAM/BOSTON DARRYL L.FELDER* / JOEL W.MARTIN** / JOSEPH W.GOY* * Department of Biology, University of Louisiana, Lafayette, USA ** Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, USA PATTERNS IN EARLY POSTLARVAL DEVELOPMENT OF DECAPODS ABSTRACT Early postlarval stages may differ from larval and adult phases of the life cycle in such characteristics as body size, morphology, molting frequency, growth rate, nutrient require ments, behavior, and habitat. Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts.

Abstract The brachyuran crabs are diversified and widely distributed habitant throughout the world, apart from Antarctica, they are reported from all the niches of network. They are dominant in all over estuaries and found in unfathomable depths of the Ocean down to 6000m and in the high mountains up to 3500 m above the sea level.Numerous species have evolved to lead terrestrial habitats. Mostly are in fresh water, and some of these crabs have evolved to survive as phytotelms, inside empty shells of the snails, within corals "symbiotically" or "commensally" and reported from alpine, caves and desert as well. Their sizes range from 2mm to 5.5mm; the weight ranges from few milligrams up to 19 kg.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the doi:10.1111/j.1463-6409.2007.00276.x freshwater crab genus Johora (Crustacea: Brachyura: Potamidae) from the Malay Peninsula, and the origins of its insular fauna. — Zoologica Scripta, 36, 255–269. The phylogeny and biogeography of the Malayan freshwater crab genus Johora was studied using two mitochondrial genes, 16S rRNA (560 bp) and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) (616 bp), and one nuclear gene, histone 3 (H3) (328 bp). Johora is shown to be monophyletic and composed of three clades that correspond with the topography of the Malay Peninsula. The three clades were estimated to be of similar age (c. 11 million years ago (mya)). The Malayan island of Pulau Tioman (with five species) was determined to have been colonised independently by two separate clades (at c. 11 and 5 mya, respectively), one of which evolved semiterrestrial habits, possibly in response to competition by the second. A partitioned Bremer support (PBS) analysis reveals that most of the support for the phylogenetic tree comes from the COI gene fragment and that the nuclear protein-encoding genes H3 is useful for reconstructing the relationships of Johora. (Accepted 3 April 1999) Abstract Several decapod groups independently colonized freshwater and terrestrial habitats and became independent from the sea. These invasions were accompanied by analogous reproductive and developmental traits such as large eggs and an abbreviated, lecithotrophic development. Here, we present the ®rst empirical study on the evolution of reproductive and developmental traits that accompany the invasion of land by crabs. As crucial steps in the colonization, we identify the transitions of the larval nursery, ®rst, from the marine plankton into landlocked-brackish nurseries and, second, into fresh water. During these invasions, the early life-cycle stages were facing new ecological conditions and selective agents. We test hypotheses on the evolution of egg size and the mode of development in relation to the larval ecology of recent species and draw conclusions on their evolutionary past. As a model we focus on the genus Sesarma, that colonized Jamaica relatively recently and comprises species with a larval development in marine, brackish and freshwater habitats. In addition, we compare representatives of the crab genera Armases, Sesarma and Uca that invaded brackish-nursery habitats independently.

  • The Oldest Freshwater Crabs: Claws on Dinosaur Bones Ninon Robin1*, Barry W
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The oldest freshwater crabs: claws on dinosaur bones Ninon Robin1*, Barry W. M. van Bakel3,4, Matúš Hyžný5, Aude Cincotta2, Géraldine Garcia6, Sylvain Charbonnier1, Pascal Godefroit7 & Xavier Valentin6,8 With approximately 1,500 extant species, freshwater crabs (Decapoda: Brachyura) are among the most diverse decapod crustaceans. Nevertheless, their fossil record is extremely limited: only Potamidae, Potamonautidae and Trichodactylidae are reported up to the Eocene of the Neotropics so far. This work documents unusually large decapod claws from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) continental deposits of Velaux and vicinity (southern France), in close association with large vertebrate remains. In addition to (1) the systematic assignment of these claws, the study addresses (2) the salinity trends in the deposit environment from its faunal assemblage and the elementary chemical patterns of fossils, and (3) the likely scenario for their auto/allochthony in the Velaux fuvial system. These claws belong to a new taxon, Dinocarcinus velauciensis n. gen. n. sp., referred to as Portunoidea sensu lato, a group of “true” crabs nowadays linked to marine systems. However, the faunal assemblage, the claw taphonomy and the carbonates Y/Ho signatures support their ancient freshwater/terrestrial ecology, making them the oldest reported continental brachyurans and extending the presence of crabs in freshwater environments by 40 Ma. Either as primary or as secondary freshwater crabs, the occurrence of these portunoids in Velaux is an evidence for the independent colonizations of continental environments by multiple brachyuran clades over time, as early as the Campanian. With approximately 1,500 extant species1, freshwater brachyuran crabs (Decapoda: Brachyura) are among the most diverse decapod crustaceans.

They have evolved structural specialities with respect to penis construction, sperm form, sperm storage, fertilization and brood care. Unique in the animal kingdom are safety lines that safeguard hatching and first molting. Further curiosities are dwarf males in parasitic and sessile taxa and bacteria-induced gigantism and infectious feminization in crustacean hosts. Record-breaking features in animals are relative penis length, clutch size, sperm size, chromosome number, viability of resting eggs, and fossil ages of penis, sperm and brooded embryos. These reproductive peculiarities are reviewed and their implication for basic and applied biology is discussed, including the early evolution and diversification of brood care in arthropods, sperm competition and assurance of paternity, posthumous paternity and sustainable male-based fishery, and ecotype changes by man-made pollution. Key words: Crustacea, reproduction, structural peculiarities, curiosities, records. INTRODUCTION The Crustacea are renowned for their exceptional diversity in morphology, physiology, life history and ecology. Dating back to the Early Cambrian they had ample time for experimentation with form and function (Sepkoski, 2000; Harvey et al., 2012).

Conservation challenges and action for the Critically Endangered Singapore freshwater crab Johora singaporensis D ANIEL J.J. NG ,DARREN C.J. YEO,N.SIVASOTHI and P ETER K.L. NG Abstract The Singapore freshwater crab Johora singapor- little is known about the ecology of tropical stream ensis is known only from three streams in Singapore and is decapods, with most studies focused on their zoogeography among the top 100 most threatened species in the world. It is and taxonomy (Dobson et al., 2007). the only member of the genus Johora, endemic to the Malay Primary freshwater crabs of the superfamily Potamoidea Peninsula, to be categorized as Critically Endangered on the are arguably the least well studied freshwater decapods. IUCN Red List. Extensive surveys conducted over 1 year to These crabs are adapted to freshwater environments and determine the extent of the species’ distribution revealed are independent of the marine environment for their entire that the population has declined significantly at its type life cycle (Yeo et al., 2008a). Many primary freshwater locality in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Singapore Island’s crabs have a restricted geographical distribution, show a oldest protected forest area. The species remains extant in high degree of endemism, and display direct development, two unprotected streams in Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak, producing small broods of large, yolky eggs, which hatch which are located outside the nature reserve. Acidification of directly into juvenile crabs (Hartnoll, 1988; Ng, 1988; Anger, streams as a result of acid precipitation may be a factor in the 1995; Yeo et al., 2008a; Cumberlidge et al., 2009).

ZooKeys 1031: 133–141. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.1031.63134 Abstract A new species of semi-terrestrial crab of the genus Geosesarma (Sesarmidae) is described from a limestone cave in central Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Geosesarma sodalis sp. nov. is characterised by its quadrate carapace, absence of a flagellum on the exopod of the third maxilliped, presence of 10 or 11 sharp tuber- cles on the dactylus of the chela and a diagnostic male first gonopod structure. This is the sixth species of Geosesarma reported from Sarawak, and the first member of the genus collected from inside caves. Keywords Borneo, cavernicolous, description, Geosesarma, karst, new taxon, taxonomy Introduction In 2005, Rob Stuebing passed the author several brachyuran crabs he collected while surveying limestone caves in the Bintulu area in central Sarawak.
