All-new Corolla setting new standards in its class (Abridged version)

• 10th generation of world best-seller • Dynamic new design boosts appeal • Interior space and comfort “one class above” • All new platform • Innovative engine line-up

 www.toyota-media.com

The all-new is the 10th generation of the worldwide best-seller that has become a symbol of Toyota’s core values of superior quality, style, driving pleasure and innovation.

Built on a new platform, the latest Corolla is designed to appeal to European customers seeking a classic configuration with dynamic styling and excellent driving pleasure. At the heart of new Corolla is the concept of offering customers a superior quality sedan which is “a class above” in comfort, space and quality.

Soichiro Okudaira, Executive chief engineer for the new Corolla explains: “All drivers, regardless of age, are sensitive to dynamic, high quality styling that provides a sense of luxury. Our new and strong design, combined with excellent driving dynamics, should sweep away the stereotype of Corolla as a good that lacks driver appeal.I am confident that we have developed a car that stir great excitement the moment you see it.”

New Corolla looks distinctive and different with a strong road presence; even when viewed from a distance. The car has been designed from the outset as a sedan and achieves a one- form style by moving the base of the A-pillar forward and integrating the trunk space within the slope of the rear pillars.

It is clear this is not a with a trunk added as an afterthought – indeed the sleek, dynamic look is further enhanced by the increased overall length, low roof profile and slim pillars.

Maximum interior space and a premium quality passenger environment are key features of the new Corolla. The promise of “a class above” is clear from the moment one opens the door of an interior that portrays a sense of spaciousness beyond actual space.

New Corolla presents a natural and comfortable environment for both driver and passengers. Space around the driver and passengers has been increased with more head and leg room, leading to a couple distance between the front and rear seat of 900 mm.

Rear passengers benefit from the flat floor to increase comfort while the hip points of the driver and front seat passenger have been raised to ensure a more natural seating position and better visibility.

The width and depth of the luggage compartment have been increased and the overall capacity maximised by reducing unused gaps between the lining and the body surface.

All new platform

• Excellent driver control and involvement • Exceptional low noise and vibration level • Top ratings for occupant safety

There has been a new focus on driver involvement with improved stability, responsive handling and precise steering control based on the car’s all-new platform.

The newly developed, compact and highly rigid front suspension is an L-arm MacPherson strut which reduces noise and vibration while ensuring superior straight line stability and excellent steering response. At the rear, the new torsion beam suspension accommodates the vehicle packaging while also contributing to handling, stability and ride comfort.

New Corolla has an all-new braking system to complement the new platform and suspension and offer effective active safety in all driving conditions. Braking control under all road conditions is provided by the standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake assist (BA). The Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRC) is available either standard or optional depending on market.

New Corolla is quiet and smooth on the road as it delivers on its promise of ‘a class above’. Exceptionally low levels of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) lift the new Corolla well above current C-segment sedan norms and will give occupants a clear sense of being in a car from an upper segment.

It is anticipated the new Corolla will be awarded top level ratings in Euro-NCAP crash tests and passive safety features have been carefully designed to offer maximum protection in a wide range of collision scenarios. The new Corolla is available with up-to nine including a driver’s knee .

Considerable work has gone into re-engineering the bonnet and frontal areas of Corolla to reduce the effect of pedestrian impact. The rear edge of the bonnet (where an adult head might land) now features a crushable structure and, on the front edge of the bonnet, the bonnet catch moved down and away from the design surface.

Innovative engine line-up

• All-new 1.6 Dual VVT-i petrol • Powerful D-4D 125 diesel • Choice of three transmissions

Two new innovative engines, one petrol and one diesel, will be available in the new Toyota Corolla line-up.

The 1.6-litre petrol is an all-new dual VVT-i engine developing excellent performance and low fuel consumption. The new, dual VVT-i technology continually adjusts both the intake and exhaust valve timing of the engine to ensure maximum efficiency under all operating conditions.

This results in significantly increased torque at low and medium engine speeds with increased power output at higher speeds. At the same time, it enhances fuel consumption and reduces emissions.

A new to the Corolla range is the latest generation 2.0 D-4D 125. This engine will be available with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which not only purifies hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) like conventional catalysts but also enable simultaneous reduction of particulate matter. The DPF is ‘self-cleaning’ and requires no long-term maintenance.

For maximum economy, the 1.4-litre D-4D from the current model is carried over to the new Corolla range. To complement the 1.6-litre petrol, the 1.4-litre VVT-i from the current Corolla range will also be carried over.

New Corolla offers a choice of transmissions, each carefully selected to suit the characteristics of the engine output. A conventional five-speed manual gearbox is available with both petrol engines and the 1.4-litre D-4D while the high performance D-4D 125 is available with a six speed manual.

Drivers wanting a more relaxed driving style can choose the MultiMode with paddle shift which is available with either the 1.6-litre VVT-i or the 1.4-litre D-4D engines.

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, concludes: “I am confident the driving pleasure and excellent performance of the new Corolla can be enjoyed in town, on high speed roads and out on the open highway.”

Production of the 10th generation Corolla for Europe will be based in the in Japan and the car will go on sale in Europe in the first quarter of 2007. Corolla – the ten generations

Corolla: Five Fascinating Facts

The Olympic connection The staging of the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 required a huge increase in spending on Japanese infrastructure, such as roads and highways. As a result, car travel became more accessible to many people. Toyota recognised the opportunity and brought forward the development of a medium-sized sedan: the Corolla. It was launched in 1966. In 1969, the highway from Tokyo to Nishinomiya in Hyogo Prefecture was fully opened, a distance of approximately 500km. The idea was to cover the entire distance of this highway without stopping to refuel. Toyota introduced the 45-liter tank for the 2nd generation Corolla.

The Corolla name Corolla is derived from a Latin word ‘corolla’ which translates as ‘crown of flowers’. It also followed a tradition in Toyota of giving cars names beginning with the letter C (Crown, Corona, Celica, Carina etc). Toyota still uses Latin-based names for its current passenger car range (Yaris, Auris, Avensis).

The home of Corolla Toyota’s Takaoka Plant was built in 1966 exclusively for Corolla production and the first car rolled off the production line a mere eight months after construction began. The plant is still the main Corolla production factory and builds more than 600,000 cars a year.

Worldwide sales success One month after launch (November 1966), 15 Toyota Corolla’s were exported to Australia. In 1967, exports totalled 15,425. In 1968, the car went on sale in the US and, the following year, exports topped 100,000 units. In 2005, the Corolla was produced in 16 countries and was sold in more than 140 markets across the world. Since launch, almost 32 million Corolla have been sold worldwide.

A motorsport winner Corolla has a special place in the motorsport, scoring Toyota’s first World Championship win at the Press-on-Regardless Rally in the US in 1973. The Corolla was also campaigned by Toyota Team Europe in World Championship events during 1974 and 1975. Hannu Mikkola won the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland in 1975. It was superseded by the but returned to the in 1997 and 1998.

15 A legendary global model

www.toyota-media.com

A legendary global model

• Worldwide best seller • Reputation for durability and reliability • Now with more emotional appeal • A class above

18 www.toyota-media.com

The Toyota Corolla is a legendary icon for the brand and this new 10th generation Corolla will follow in the footsteps of a remarkable family of highly successful previous models.

Since launch in 1966, the Corolla has been a major global success for Toyota. Even in 1967, more than 15,000 Corollas were being exported and sold on world markets. Today, Corolla is produced in 16 countries, spread over five continents, and is sold in 140 markets across the world.

Since its launch in 1966, Corolla has been the best selling car in Japan for 36 of the last 40 years and almost 32 million units have been sold globally, which also makes Corolla the world’s most sold model. In 2005, The Corolla was also the world’s best selling car with 1,400,000 sales around the world of which 850,000 were sedan body type. With the launch of the new generation C-segment sedan model, Toyota aims to take sales in this segment back over one million worldwide sales a year.

Corolla has always been recognised as one of the best engineered and most durable cars on the market. This core strength has been maintained, indeed built on, for the new generation. But new Corolla adds a more emotional dimension through premium quality, comfort, more sporty styling and excellent driving pleasure.

19 www.toyota-media.com

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, explains: “I decided that we needed to accept the challenge of creating a car that continues to offer the traditional values of Corolla but also incorporate something new. The new Corolla marks a step change in quality from previous generations by virtually closing the gap between its C-segment class and the higher D-segment. Toyota is confident that the new Corolla will definitely create a new class up in its category. As soon as one sees it, touches it, feels it and drives it, one can perceive the difference in quality and comfort.”

New Corolla benefits from being designed from the outset as a sedan. Although C-segment sales in Europe are declining slightly, the sub segment sedan bodytype is growing and is expected to continue to grow. This is due to the popularity of sedan models in emerging markets in Eastern Europe such as Russia or Turkey.

The Corolla sales objective for 2007 has been set at 89,000 units which is 22,000 units above the 2006 sales forecast. In 2008, on full year basis, the sales target has been set to 100,000 units which will make the Corolla sedan a truly European player.

Unlike the hatchback sub segment (where diesel plays a significant role) almost 80% of new Corolla sales are expected to be petrol where the new 1.6-litre dual VVT-i engine will be the feature model of the range and will play a significant role with a sales mix target of over 60% of the total sales.

20 Distinctive and sporty design

www.toyota-media.com

Distinctive and sporty design

• Designed as a one-form style sedan • Low, sporty stance with wide track • Dynamic character lines and surfaces • Maximum interior space and comfort

23 www.toyota-media.com

The all-new Corolla is distinctive and different; it has a strong road presence, even when viewed from a distance. Its low and wide stance creates a sporty and dynamic look that is enhanced by the clear character lines and complex surface structures.

Drivers, regardless of age, are sensitive to dynamic, high quality styling that provides a sense of luxury. The new Corolla is designed to appeal to a broad range of customers on a global scale. Even so, the strong influence of the highly competitive European market – where customers demand high quality and excellent driving performance – stands out.

The new Corolla has been designed at Toyota’s design centre in Japan. Japanese designers spent about four months in Italy working on the design; looking for a style that would stand out, even on the streets of Turin. As a result, they realised that it was extremely important to first develop “an image of solidity and strength”.

Toshi Ezaki, chief engineer for the new Corolla project explains: “The challenge was to create a wide and low package with width increased by 60 mm while keeping the same height to project an image of increased stability. 1,470 mm

2,600 mm 1,760 mm 4,540 mm

“We sought to make improvements to every aspect of the vehicle; increasing the head room while keeping the overall height, closing the gap between the tyre and the wheel arch, and improving the relationship between the overall cabin shape and the wheel arches to create a more dynamic form.”

24 www.toyota-media.com

Designed as a sedan

• Bold frontal styling • One-form style • Increased interior space

The new Corolla benefits from being designed from the outset as a sedan to create an unmatched sense of high quality. While offering customers the traditional benefits of a classic three-box configuration, the new Corolla achieves a one-form style by moving the base of the A-pillar forward and integrating the trunk space within the slope of the rear pillars.

In side profile it is clear this is not a hatchback with a trunk added as an afterthought – indeed the sleek, dynamic look is further enhanced by the increased overall length, low roof profile and slim pillars. This overall effect is a ‘cab-forward’ look which emphasises the sense of space and proportion.

In comparison with the current model, the overall height of the new Corolla (1,470 mm) has been maintained while interior space and headroom are increased throughout by clever packaging. The new model (4,540 mm) is 130 mm longer than the current one while the remains at 2,600 mm.

But the more sporting effect created by the wider, lower stance is most evident from the wider front and rear track which has pushed the width out to 1,760 mm (1,710 mm in the current model).

25 www.toyota-media.com

The frontal styling is bold with a low placed radiator grille and bumper configuration that swoops down from the horizontal to the vertical to create a sense of movement. The has an outline that follows this bumper shape and the three-step lamp configuration is sporty and youthful.

Perhaps the most distinctive features of the new Corolla are the strong character lines that flow the length of the car, starting at the front bumper and flowing back through the doors to the rear. They help create a complex, double concave surface on the front and rear wings that is becoming distinctive in the Toyota sedan range and which is modern, yet classically simple.

The complex surface characteristics are built up through layering and rounding of the shapes which express quality and solidity. Attention to detail, such as in the texture of the radiator grille, adds visual interest.

The rear design of a sedan is always important and new Corolla does not compromise or disappoint. The sweeping cut of the rear pillar emphasises the flowing lines to the rear and the cab forward stance. The overall effect is strong and wide with the lower edge of the bumper adopting a sporty, aerodynamic look with prominent round rear reflectors.

Once again, the three-step theme is repeated in the tail light cluster which follows the upper bumper line.

26 www.toyota-media.com

Stylish, comfortable interior

• Design creates sense of spaciousness • Superior quality and luxury feel • A relaxed environment

Maximum interior space and a premium quality passenger environment are key features of the new Corolla. They ensure it delivers on its promise of “a class above”.

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, explains: “We wanted to develop an interior that portrays a sense of spaciousness beyond actual space, the moment you open the door and enter the car. We paid attention to everything from expanding the door trim fabric area to ensuring a good operational feel and a sense of volume with the newly developed seats.”

To achieve this sense of space, the designers studied the relative proportions of every element of the interior using the maxim: ‘mechanism minimum, man maximum’. At the same time, the relaxed curved lines of the styling and superior quality of the fabrics and instrumentation contribute to the premium feel.

27 www.toyota-media.com

As a result, the new Corolla presents a natural and comfortable environment for both driver and passengers. While the front seats are in a comfort style with a ‘fun-to-drive’ feel, the rear passenger area has a more relaxed feel.

The dynamic styling of the exterior is carried over into the interior, with character lines around the side to the upper surface of the seats and a sense of luxury is created by the silver trimmed centre console which creates a strong vertical element in the overall design. This houses the fully integrated ventilation, audio and (where fitted) navigation systems.

The upper surface of the main instrument panel has been lowered to create a sense of roominess and the panel is fully integrated into the relaxed curve of the high quality door trim to create an almost seamless surround. This curve is broken by the strong vertical of the centre console which creates a dynamic tension.

The round form of the instrument panel creates a sense of strength and performance while it is cut-away to create space and room around the legs. The moulded glove box is large and spacious.

Throughout the interior great attention has been paid to the touch and feel of surfaces and the positive operation of switches and controls to create a high quality tactile experience. The area of fabric on the door trim has been extended and seat cushion thickness increased for extra comfort and support.

New upholsteries are introduced with premium image patterns and the door trim is sculpted away to give extra space around the leg and hips. Textured patterns break up the soft-touch surface of the instrument panel to create visual interest.

Two warm interior colour schemes are available, a two-tone dark grey and a more sophisticated greige.

These are complemented by the new exterior colours which have been selected to enhance the superior quality of the new Corolla. The new model will be available in 8 specially selected body colours, four of which are new to the Toyota range.

28 Offering ‘a class above’

www.toyota-media.com

Offering ‘a class above’

• High quality equipment and finish • Maximum interior space and comfort • Practicality and versatility improved

31 www.toyota-media.com

At the heart of the new Corolla is the concept of offering customers a superior quality sedan which is “a class above” and which will lead the segment for many years to come. To achieve this, new Corolla has been designed to exceed customer expectations in the delivery of space, comfort and high quality.

Maximum interior space and a premium quality passenger environment are key features. At the same time, the practical aspects of Corolla ownership have not been forgotten – intelligent use of storage space, high levels of standard equipment, low noise levels and, of course, excellent safety.

This sense of “a class above” starts as you approach the car. The stylish new design with its wide and low package already indicates a model that is more spacious and has more character than its rivals. You can feel the difference the moment you sit in the car (the solid sound of the door closing, for example) and Corolla certainly delivers as you start to move off – smooth steering feel, instant throttle response, great suspension feedback.

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, says: “We paid great attention to every detail of the operating system to ensure a good feel. The new Corolla is designed with superior quality that surpasses that of the competition. To fully appreciate these features and the sense of ‘a class above’, it is better to actually ride the new model than read about it.”

32 www.toyota-media.com

More spacious interior

• More hip and shoulder room • Natural driving position • Versatile luggage space

The designers were able to make full use of the versatility available in the new shape. Space around the driver and passengers has been significantly increased for superior comfort. The wider body and track (up by 50 mm to 1,760 mm) has resulted in more shoulder and hip room within the passenger compartment.

And, although the new Corolla has the same height than the model it replaces, head room for front and rear seat passengers has been increased. This has been achieved by redesigning the seats and adjusting the seating position, moving the passengers back within the cabin. The couple distance (between the front and rear seat) has been increased to 900 mm. The driving position is more natural too. The steering column angle has been adjusted and the steering position moved back. Drivers can quickly find their own ideal seating position with both seat height control, recline and a steering column that adjusts for tilt and reach.

In the rear of the car, passenger comfort has been greatly increased by re-engineering of the underbody components to achieve a flat floor and the seat cushions redesigned. The rear seat will fold on a 60/40 split and features a security lock system to prevent accidental operation of the release latch.

On higher grade models, the rear seats are available with a centre armrest that provides additional cupholders for convenience.

33 www.toyota-media.com

Storage space and versatility remain key features of the Corolla. Luggage compartment volume has been increased by 13 litres over the previous model by reducing unused gaps between the lining and the body shell. A small luggage tray in the side of the compartment acts as a jack cover and tie-down hooks in the floor are a convenience feature.

There are 15 separate easy to use storage spaces through the new Corolla so that typical family items are always safely stowed but also easily to hand. The glove box, with separate upper box, is a natural feature of the design but is also spacious to carry a wide range of items.

Other notable storage spaces include the side pockets on the centre console, the large door pockets designed to carry maps and PET bottles and the large capacity console box with accessory tray. There is even an overhead console for items such as sun glasses.

High build quality

• Attention to touch and feel • Seamless appearance of surfaces • Tight panel fit

The superior quality of the interior is best demonstrated through the soft touch and feel of the trim surfaces and precise operation of the controls. But there has also been a focus on panel fit and styling which creates the image of seamless surfaces.

The glove box extends to meet the door trim, reducing the gaps between parts and the instrument panel itself moulds around the driver and front seat passenger to meet the door trims.

There are feature highlights to enhance the visual quality: silver trim around the vertical of the centre console, silver trim on the gear shift lever and bezels for the push start button (where fitted) and ignition lock.

34 www.toyota-media.com

Sporty driving environment

• Hi-tech Optitron meter panel • Multi-function display • Gear Shift Indicator

Alongside these comfort and quality features, new Corolla expresses its sporty side through the driving position and main meter cluster which focuses on providing clear driver information and control.

The two-dial Optitron meter panel features stepped amber and red illumination which lights progressively when activated. Hi-tech liquid crystal displays for multi-function information (available in 7 languages) are integrated into the main panel to indicate water temperature, fuel level and, with the MultiMode transmission, gear positions.

The multi-function driver information display (programmable for units and language) gives important information, such as driving history, driving range and fuel consumption. A Gear Shift Indicator light, on only, helps the driver achieve optimum performance and fuel consumption by indicating when to change gear.

An Adjustable Speed Limiter is available which allows the driver to set a maximum speed limit, after which further acceleration is suppressed. Operation is indicated within the multi-function display and, for safety reasons, can be over-ridden by a sudden kick-down on the accelerator to allow a temporary increase in speed. The speed limiter then resets when the speed drops back down below the chosen limit.

35 www.toyota-media.com

The adjustable speed limiter is available in conjunction with the electronic cruise control that holds a pre-set cruising speed for maximum comfort and improved fuel consumption.

For maximum passenger comfort, the ventilation and air conditioning system has been redesigned to be effective at low speeds when insufficient cooling is usually felt. The small, light weight design of the variable compressor is more economical to run than previously and also delivers better performance.

Depending on grades, a dial-type manual or automatic air conditioning is available for people comfort.

A supplementary heater is available to ensure rapid and effective heating performance in cold climates.

36 www.toyota-media.com

Class-leading levels of equipment

• Smart Entry & Start available • Fully integrated audio system • Full map, DVD navigation option

The sense of “a class above” continues with the high level of equipment and specification that will be available through the Corolla range, depending on grade and local market.

Typical is the Smart Entry & Start system which detects the presence of an electronic ‘key’ within a range of about 1 m from the car. A touch-sensor on the back of the driver’s door handle allows the door to be opened (or locked) and the car is then started using the push button on the instrument panel.

This convenience feature is particularly useful when approaching the car carrying heavy items, such as shopping, and removes the need to search for the key in poor weather.

On lower grades, Corolla is available with a conventional remote central locking system which features an auto-lock function to prevent accidental unlocking. If the doors are not opened within 30 seconds of unlocking and the key inserted in the ignition, the doors relock.

The audio system (with an irregular shape for added anti-theft protection) is available with either single or six CD player unit and can handle MP3 or WMA format discs. Digital processing of the radio signal reduces noise on both FM and AM tuning.

Tone settings for base and treble can be stored in the memory for each separate mode (AM, FM or CD) and LIVE-ACS (acoustic) is adopted for the speaker settings.

37 www.toyota-media.com

This boosts the bass range without distorting the mid-range sounds and, while the speakers are positioned near the foot -wells, the sound is experienced as if it is flowing from above.

The latest development of Toyota’s full-map touch screen navigation system, with bluetooth hands-free mobile phone compatibility, is available with voice recognition in 3 languages (French has been newly added) and screen display and voice guidance in 10 languages, including Norwegian and Portuguese.

The new 32,000 colour display is sharper and clearer than previously available and the map displays in familiar, European colours. A user-friendly ‘hint’ guide helps the driver to understand the function of each switch when the ‘?’ symbol on the screen is touched.

The junction display shows the lanes through major intersections and the driving route can be stored in memory for future reference. Anticipated arrival time is displayed by touching the screen.

On high grade models the leather trimmed sports steering wheel features audio and phone function switches with the cruise control and speed limiter. Further comfort features available include front and rear electric windows, power mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and dusk-sensing lights and a self-dimming interior mirror that reacts to light from the rear.

38 Exciting driving pleasure

www.toyota-media.com

Exciting driving pleasure

• All-new 1.6 Dual VVT-i petrol to become core of range • New D-4D 125 diesel engine • Choice of three transmissions • Excellent aerodynamics and low noise

41 www.toyota-media.com

With an all-new platform, new suspension and a high performance range of innovative and economical powertrains, the new Corolla is designed to offer top class driving pleasure. This is achieved through balancing outright performance with excellent driver feedback and remarkably low levels of noise.

At the same time, Corolla has lost none of the superior comfort and ride qualities that have made it a best-seller around the world. It remains easy-to-drive and easy-to-own.

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, says: “We focused particularly on torque at low speeds and acceleration. We also pursued fuel economy by combining the engine with a drive train that matches the power output characteristics. The newly developed suspension allows the driver good sensitivity and control while maintaining excellent comfort and handling.”

The all-new Corolla offers a full choice of advanced, high performance engines; two petrol and two diesel with three possible transmissions. All engines meet Euro IV emissions standards and the highly efficient aerodynamic styling ensures the new Corolla delivers low fuel consumption with reduced exhaust gases while also contributing to remarkably low noise levels.

Innovative new 1.6 Dual VVT-i

• Boosts mid-range torque • More power at high engine revs • Low fuel consumption, fewer emissions

Heading up the line-up is a brand new power unit, the 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i which builds on the advanced technology of the current Toyota VVT-i range. Dual VVT-i stands for Toyota’s unique system of independent cam shaft variation for both, intake and exhaust timing using one electro-hydraulic variation system for each of the cam shafts.

The 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i is a four cylinder, 1598 cc engine which develops 91 kW (124 hp DIN) at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 157 Nm at 5,200 rpm. However, the excellent torque characteristics of this engine mean a remarkable flat torque curve – above 140 Nm from 2,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm. In real world driving this means smooth, powerful acceleration from low engine speeds and excellent top-end power.

At the same time, the Dual VVT-i technology offers excellent fuel consumption and reduced levels of harmful emissions. The new Corolla 1.6 Dual VVT-i will achieve 6.9 l/100km on the

42 www.toyota-media.com

European combined fuel cycle and yet still delivers sparking performance. Top speed is 195 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h (with five speed manual gearbox) takes just 10.4 seconds.

1.6 Dual VVT-i engine

The 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i engine is a compact, light weight unit designed to deliver high performance, low fuel consumption and low noise levels. The overall size and weight of the unit has been reduced through a series of measures including integrating the water pump and oil passage into the front of the engine, adopting a resin-type inlet manifold and optimising the timing chain layout.

In addition, extensive use of Computer-Assisted Engineering (CAE) has reduced the weight of the reciprocating parts and increased the rigidity of the engine block structure.

The innovative Dual VVT-i technology continually varies the timing overlap of the inlet and exhaust valves to optimise combustion pressures under a wide range of engine loads. This results in increased torque at low and medium engine speeds with increased power output at higher engine speeds. At the same time, Dual VVT-i offers better fuel economy and lower emissions.

The Dual VVT-i system uses hydraulic pressure, controlled by the main engine computer, to continually vary the phase of both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Apart from the variable timing, the system means that valve lift can also be increased resulting in greater power output.

Other technical advances for the 1.6-litre dual VVT-i reduce frictional losses and boost performance. A roller rocker arm system is used to reduce friction between the camshaft and the sliding parts. Oil-pressure activated rush adjusters mean valve clearance needs no maintenance.

Low tension piston rings, an offset crankshaft and optimised intake port all further contribute to excellent low friction and reduced fuel consumption.

Economical, smooth 1.4 VVT-iCOR4005_06 To complement the power and technology of the new 1.6 Dual VVT-i, the new Corolla is also available with the popular 1.4 VVT-i engine, carried over from the current model.

In its latest development, this smooth and economical engine develops 71kW (97 hp DIN) at 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 130 Nm at 4,400 rpm. This is sufficient to give the Corolla a top speed of 170 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 13.0 seconds.

The 1.4-litre VVT-i is especially economical and ideal for city driving with its smooth torque output and low noise levels. On the combined European fuel economy standard it returns 6.7 l/100km.

The 1.4-litre VVT-i meets Euro IV emissions standards thanks to the fitment of an exhaust manifold catalytic converter to further clean exhaust gases.

High performance D-4D 125

• Lightweight, aluminium block diesel • Balance of power and fuel consumption • Available with self-cleaning particle filter

Innovation continues with the availability of a new diesel engine to the Corolla range; the latest generation 2.0 D-4D 125. This remarkable engine is at the heart of Toyota’s diesel growth strategy in Europe and offers both increased driving pleasure through high power output and excellent fuel economy.

Installed in the new Corolla, the D-4D 125 equipped with Oxydation Catalytic Converter (Cco) develops a maximum 93 kW (126 hp DIN) with a constant torque output of 300 Nm from 2,000 to 2,800 rpm (with DPF from 1,800 to 2,400 rpm). This gives the new Corolla D-4D 125 outstanding mid-range in-gear performance for maximum driving pleasure under real world conditions.

Typical performance figures for the Corolla D-4D 125 reveal a top speed of 200 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h acceleration (with six speed manual gearbox) in 10.3 seconds. Yet this sparkling performance is achieved with excellent fuel consumption, recording 5.3 l/100km with CCo on the combined European cycle (5.7 l/km with DPF).

45 www.toyota-media.com

The 2.0-litre D-4D 125 engine is based on the same block and uses the same highly successful technology as the advanced 2.2-litre D-4D engines in the Toyota range. But it benefits from reduced weight and reduced engine capacity, which results in improved fuel efficiency.

The engine block and cylinder head are all aluminium but the piston stroke has been reduced to 86 mm to achieve the smaller capacity. The piston bowl has been redesigned to accommodate the shorter stroke and also to compensate for any reduction in swirl effect, which could lead to less efficient fuel burning.

A key feature of the new generation D-4D engines is their low compression ratio, which helps reduce noise and improves engine efficiency. The 2.0 D-4D 125 operates at a ratio of 16.8:1 which is remarkable for a power output of this level.

The 2.0 D-4D 125 uses the latest generation, high pressure diesel system which operates up-to 1,700 bar. Engine efficiency is further boosted with a high performance Variable Nozzle (VNT) which has been developed to react quickly to throttle inputs. This helps to compensate for the reduced compression ratio and helps eliminate any sense of ‘turbo-lag’.

The Corolla D-4D 125 is also an important development in the Toyota Clean Power strategy to reduce harmful emissions. In selected markets, the D-4D 125 will be available with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which not only purifies hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) like conventional catalysts but also enable simultaneous reduction of particulate matter. The DPF is ‘self-cleaning’ and requires no long term maintenance.

For maximum economy combined with smooth city driving, the new Corolla is also available with the successful 1.4-litre D-4D diesel which is carried over from the current model range.

This light weight engine was the first all-aluminium diesel in the world and still delivers a remarkable balance of easy driving and economy. This engine develops 66 kW (90 hp DIN) at 3,800rpm and 190 Nm of torque between 1,800 rpm and 3,000 rpm.

In the new Corolla the 1.4 D-4D will achieve and outstanding fuel economy of 4.9 l/100km. But, thanks to its light weight and excellent power delivery, this is not at the expense of performance. The 1.4 D-4D Corolla has a top speed of 175 km/h and will accelerate to 100 km/h (with five speed manual gearbox) in 12.0 seconds.

Transmission matched to output

• Choice of three transmissions

Exciting driving pleasure is enhanced on the new Corolla with the choice of transmissions, each carefully matched to suit the characteristics of the engine output.

A conventional five-speed manual gearbox was fine-tuned to match the smaller engine range and is available on both petrol engines and the 1.4-litre D-4D while the high performance D- 4D 125 is available with a six speed manual. These manual gearboxes are light and compact, with gear ratios chosen to deliver a balance of exceptional power performance and good fuel economy.

The shift feel is optimised by precise engineering of major components and friction losses are reduced through the use of low viscosity gear oil and low resistance bearings. Noise levels are suppressed through rigid casing design, a third gearbox mount point and high precision gears.

47 www.toyota-media.com

Drivers wanting a more relaxed driving style can choose the latest development of the MultiMode transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift. This offers either automatic or manual gear changing and is available with either the 1.6-litre VVT-i petrol or the 1.4-litre D-4D.

In manual mode, the gear shifts are made either by sequential shift of gear lever or by the paddle shifts on the steering wheel. The paddle shifts can also be used to override the automatic gear selection for temporary driving in manual mode.

Fuel economy with the MultiMode transmission is excellent thanks to the optimised control system and highly efficient direct gearing, without resorting to a torque adapter.

All manual transmissions will be equipped with the Gear Shift Indicator. This feature indicates to the driver when to shift gear up or down for optimal environmental performance. The system takes into account the driving conditions, including the level that the accelerator pedal is pressed and the vehicle speed. The Gear Shift Indicator may result in 5% fuel consumption reduction compared to normal gear shifting but the potential of improvement is, of course, dependent in general on the driver’s personal driving habits.

All-new suspension for maximum stability

• Excellent driver control and involvement • Precise, responsive steering

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki wanted the new Corolla to give drivers more “excitement and delight” without affecting its worldwide reputation for ease of use and driving comfort. There has been a new focus on driver involvement with improved stability, responsive handling and precise steering control based on the car’s all-new platform.

L-arm MacPherson strut suspension

Stabilizer Bar

L-Arm

The newly-developed, compact and highly rigid front suspension is an L-arm MacPherson strut which brings the suspension strut in-board of the wheel hub to improve noise and vibration suppression. At the same time, the MacPherson strut design ensures superior straight line stability and excellent steering response.

The suspension geometry has been optimised with careful attention to the positioning of the lower arm, the camber angle, caster angle and king-pin inclinations. The lightweight anti-roll bar has ball-joint mountings to the strut casing and bushes embedded in the suspension member to ensure consistent rigidity and a highly efficient layout.

Axle Beam Coil Spring

Trailing Arm Bushing

At the rear, the new torsion beam suspension accommodates the vehicle packaging while also contributing to handling, stability and ride comfort. The suspension layout, with optimised settings throughout, separates the coil spring and damper while allowing a wider track for the cargo area.

The torsion beam suspension and newly-designed slanted trailing bushes allow precise control of camber and toe changes in response to lateral forces. Excellent stability is achieved in straight line driving while toe-in during cornering ensures good handling and a secure feel.

To achieve good steering response and a positive driving experience, wheel and tyre sizes have been increased to 15” and 16”, while the newly adopted Electric Power Steering (EPS) is precise and responsive; reacting without delay to driver input.

The steering ratio (2.9 turns lock-to-lock) and degree of EPS control (variable according to vehicle speed) have been optimised to provide excellent feedback and driver control.

The EPS contributes to fuel economy by consuming power only when steering force assistance is needed and is also more environmentally friendly because the system does not require hydraulic fluid. The compact, high output motor and torque sensor are built into the steering column, providing direct steering assistance for enhanced feel.

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, concludes: “I am confident the driving pleasure and excellent performance of the new Corolla can be enjoyed in town, on high speed roads and out on the open highway.”

50 Ownership experience

www.toyota-media.com

Ownership experience

• Quietest sedan in the segment • Top levels of safety • Low ownership costs

53 www.toyota-media.com

Corolla has a wide and loyal owner base across the world for whom the virtues of low ownership cost, high safety and excellent durability are important. This latest generation Corolla builds on these values and adds to the appeal with more driving excitement, more emotional styling and even more comfort.

In this way, new Corolla will bring new customers to Toyota and prove to be a worthy successor to the famous models that have gone before.

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki, says: “I decided that the most important challenge was to develop a car that could attract a wide range of customers while inheriting the durability, reliability and ease of handling that has been highly praised by our existing buyers.”

Exceptionally quiet on the road

• High performance aerodynamics • Excellent noise and vibration suppression

A key factor is the delivery of “a class above” is the exceptionally quiet and smooth performance on new Corolla on the road. This lifts new Corolla well above current C-segment sedan norms and will give occupants a clear sense of being in a premium sector car.

These exceptionally low levels of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) are the result of precise aerodynamic design, supported by a rigid platform and body structure with careful placement of sound absorbing material and coatings.

The aerodynamics of new Corolla are designed to smooth the air flow around, over and under the body to reduce wind noise and, at the same time, aid fuel consumption. In particular, re-engineering the Corolla underbody and suspension, plus the use of underbody covers for engine, fuel tank and rear floor, has created a flat surface and optimised the airflow.

Smooth shapes with minimal differences in surface levels (including the flush-mounted windscreen) and precise panel gaps further reduce drag with the lower edge of the front and rear bumpers, and the rear body cut-off have been designed to minimise air disturbance.

At the same time, certain features of the aerodynamics also ensure excellent high speed stability and good steering response. These include the spats in front of the tyres and the prominent shape of the front wing and wheel arch.

54 www.toyota-media.com

Underneath the body further measures reduce low noise and vibration transmission. Careful placing of cross-members and selected reinforcing points ensure a rigid floor panel and suppress movement in the body framework. A cross member in the dash panel reduces vibration and ensures a high level of quietness.

Sound absorbing coating and material is carefully positioned through the dash and floor to maximum effect while foam sound insulation is placed in the body frame. A cell-type sound absorbing material is used for the engine undercover to reduce mass and a bonnet insulator is available to create an air layer between the bonnet panels.

Further sound insulation is placed throughout the interior with roof silencers between the roof reinforcements, sound insulating carpets and felt in each trim panel. Finally, road noise is further suppressed by installing sound absorbing material under the wheel arches and door seals are double insulating.

Top level passive safety

• Available with up-to nine airbags • Designed to minimise pedestrian impact • Strong passenger cell

Corolla passive safety features have been carefully designed to offer maximum protection in a wide range of collision scenarios and it is anticipated the new Corolla will be awarded top level ratings in Euro-NCAP crash tests.

New Corolla is available with up-to nine airbags including a driver’s knee airbag which helps protect the driver’s knee from collision with the steering column and other objects around the lower instrument panel.

55 www.toyota-media.com

Other airbags available include front SRS airbags, side airbags for driver and front seat passengers and curtain shield airbags that will protect the head of front and rear seat occupants from a side impact.

Isofix child seat restraint mountings are provided in the rear seats with top tethers. Front seats feature anti-whiplash protection with specially designed head restraints and seat frames.

Considerable work has gone into re-engineering the bonnet and frontal areas of Corolla to reduce the effect of pedestrian impact and it is anticipated this will also be reflected in the Euro-NCAP rating.

The rear edge of the bonnet (where an adult head might land) now features a crushable structure and the windscreen wiper pivot can drop away beneath the cowl in the event of an impact. On the front edge of the bonnet, the dent reinforcement has been moved away from the main surface and the bonnet catch moved down and away from the design surface. Impact absorbers are mounted ahead of the bumper and radiator fixings.

56 www.toyota-media.com

The strength of the new Corolla in protecting its occupants comes from the precise design of a rigid passenger cabin that offers ‘omni-directional’ capability. That is to say: it has been designed to offer effective energy absorption in impacts from the front, the rear and the side. Tests are performed at speeds of 55 km/h.

Structural reinforcements and cross members are placed through the body to disperse impact energy around the passenger compartment and minimise the risk of injury to the occupants. Specific items include high tension sheet steel in reinforcements, cross members and tunnel bracing, and roof reinforcement.

Door impact beams help reduce intrusion in side impact and disperse energy around the body. In addition, impact absorbing material in the door panels and trim helps to suppress impact forces.

Effective active safety systems

• All-new braking system • ABS with EBD as standard • Stability control with traction control

New Corolla has an all-new braking system to complement the new platform and suspension and offer effective active safety in all driving conditions. Front brakes are ventilated discs with high friction pads and rear brakes are solid discs. Brake components have been optimised to reduce weight and increase effectiveness.

Braking control under all road conditions is provided by the standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. This ensures that maximum brake pressure is applied when the driver brakes hard.

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRC) is available either standard or optional depending on market to provide safe, controllable handling in extreme conditions.

57 www.toyota-media.com

Low cost of ownership

• Low maintenance and repair costs • Attention to recycling and environment

Ownership costs are driven down by low fuel consumption and low cost maintenance programmes which the new Corolla will offer. New Corolla is also expected to achieve low insurance group ratings in European countries where they are relevant.

New Corolla has been designed to reduce repair costs by minimising damage to the major components of the underframe in minor collisions without affecting overall safety ratings.

Typical features include the bolt-on structure for the front bumper reinforcement and for the radiator support. This support is designed to retract during a collision to protect the cooling units. A crush box absorbs collision energy in the bumper reinforcement to reduce damage to the front body frame while, at the rear, the bumper arm also acts to suppress damage.

These safety features help protect the main structure of the new Corolla which continues to offer exceptional strength and durability throughout the life cycle of the car. The underbody structure has been reinforced in key areas to increase rigidity and handling stability. Rust resistant steel sheet is used in the majority of the body panels to increase vehicle life, even in some of the harshest global environments.

When the time does come for the Corolla to be recycled, dismantling has been made easier by the display of recycle marks on major plastic components including the door trims, lower instrument panel and front bumper. Recyclable materials, including resins and felt, are used extensively and parts that are difficult to separate, such as minor metal clips, have been reduced.

Material used within the body and trim has been adopted to reduce the harmful effects on the environment during manufacture.

Easy to dismantle mark Toyota Super Olefin Polymer (TSOP)

Chief engineer, Toshi Ezaki concludes: “As Corolla is a global product, factors such as using materials that can be procured at multiple production sites and globally achievable levels of superior quality must be taken into consideration. I am confident new Corolla will deliver high quality, comfort and space without compromise.”
