Two Soldiers who both served with the 4th Infantry Division but in different units shared a common bond. Sgt. David Duran and Sgt. Michael A. Duer of the E Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, were honored with the presentation of the Purple Heart in recognition for wounds received and sacrifices made in combat actions while serving in Iraq. The ceremony was at the Fort Carson Special Events Center, April 9. Both Soldiers were injured because of a roadside bomb that went off next to their convoys on different dates. Maj. Gen Mark A. Graham, commanding general, Division West (First Army) and Fort Carson said, “In 1893, Kathryn E. Bates, who was a college instructor in Massachusetts came to Colorado Springs where she wrote the poem, ‘America the Beautiful’ while visiting Pikes Peak. How fitting it is today that we pin Purple Heart medals on two Soldiers that fought for the nation and have given everything to the nation, that she would pen the words to America the Beautiful, ‘for purple mountains majesty, above the fruited plains.’ She wrote the song of purple mountains majesty and today we give the Purple Heart, and I cannot think of a more fitting place for you to receive your Purple Hearts than here, the place where you deployed from and the land you defended.” Graham continued, “I’ve pinned a lot of Purple Hearts on Soldiers and handed a lot out to Families because the Soldiers had passed away. We are glad you two Soldiers are here with Photo illustration by James H. Egbert us today so we can pin Purple Hearts on your chest.” Echoing the final statement made by Graham, Duer said, “I am just happy to be here and receive this medal because most who get it, get it posthumously. I just want to get through my treatments and get back to my guys.” Prior to receiving his injuries, Duran had re-enlisted for six years in the Army and already has plans to deploy again to Iraq if called on. “This isn’t the sort of thing you go looking for, it just happens. I want to get back to my work and do my part,” said Duran. The Families of both Soldiers gathered around them in support and expressed their pride in the Soldiers who were honored with the medals.

What sports did you play as a young athlete? I played soccer as a young man. I was a pretty big kid and a lot of people gave me grief about not playing football. I played soccer since the first grade and I played recreationally until I got older and started playing for the New Jersey state team. I got recruited out of one of my tournaments and that is what got me to West Point and here I am now doing my service for the country. Where have you represented the Army in soccer? I was fortunate enough to be selected for the 18-man team that played in the recent All-Armed Forces Tournament. We ended up taking second place in that tournament. What has been your best moment playing soccer? That would be this year while playing in the All-Armed Forces Tournament. I made a diving save against Air Force in the 90th minute of the game that helped us win the game and defeat our rival. As soon as I made the save, the whistle blew to end the game and it was just a great feeling. What is your favorite moment in pro sports? I am a big Yankee fan and the best moment was when Aaron Boone hit the home run to beat the Boston Red Sox and get the Yankees to the 2003 World Series. I was at the game and it was awesome What would you change in sports today? I would try to make soccer a more popular sport in the United States. Soccer is such an awesome game, I love the game and it’s a big part of my life and I would love to see more people involved in it. Photo by Walt Johnson
