PRESS KIT Brussels, 7 March 2017 MIXITY.brussels 2017, a whole year devoted to culture and the cultures of Brussels • MIXITY.brussels 2017 emphasizes the diversity that the Brussels-Capital Region is known for. • Several major events planned especially for this theme year will periodically enliven MIXITY.brussels 2017 and underscore freedom of life-stance or sexual orientation, cultural openness, the 183 nationalities in Brussels, and culture in general in all of its forms. • Other cultural activities (events, exhibitions, etc.) that also comprise Brussels' multicultural DNA are in the spotlight. MIXITY.brussels is a large-scale project geared towards all citizens, visitors, and fans of the Brussels Region. It is a joint initiative involving four Belgian government agencies: the Brussels-Wallonia Federation, the Brussels-Capital Region, the Flemish Community, and the French Community Commission (COCOF). It's a joint operation the likes of which have not been seen in the Belgian capital since the year 2000's "Brussels, European Culture Capital." From March 2017 through June 2018, visit.brussels will coordinate and feature numerous projects through active cooperation with the cultural and socio-cultural realms of Brussels. Their common denominator: all will convey the rich and diverse dynamic that characterizes the European Capital. Contents 1. Gender Transformations in the Trinidad Carnival Author Uses the Presence

De Freitas Disrupting the nation : gender transformations in the Trinidad Carnival Author uses the presence and performance of women in Trinidad's Carnival, and the narratives surrounding them, to comprehend the linkages between Carnival and the Trinidadian national identity, between gender and the nationalist project. She contends that the public debates surrounding the perceived 'feminization' of Carnival are highly charged because it both exposes the dilemma of post-colonial nation-building and strikes at the heart of the nationalist project. DE FREITAS DISRUPTING "THE NATION" : GENDER TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE TRINIDAD CARNIVAL INTRODUCTION Annually, between the Christian seasons of Christmas and Lent, the twin- island "nation" of Trinidad and Tobago devotes a considerable amount of resources and energy to Carnival activities.1 A season in its own right, the Carnival culminates in a two-day street celebration marked by music, dancing, and masquerade performances. Historically, Trinidad's Carnival2 has served as a social barometer of sorts, registering the ethos, fantasies, ideals, and contests of the society, what Victor Turner (1986:41) has called the hopelessly intermingled indicative and subjunctive "moods" of a culture. In turn, Carnival has had a profound effect on the Self-conscious- ness and behavior of Trinidadians as a people. Each year, Carnival is known, and sometimes expected, to generate a controversy or highly con- tentious issue. Some controversies are year-specific and often confined to the organizational bodies responsible for the planning and performance of the Carnival. -

REMIGIO CANTAGALLINA 3 INTRODUCTORY NOTE There are works in the iconography of a city that stand out due to their originality and major documentary value, and this certainly applies to the drawings of Remigio Cantagallina. This brochure invites you to discover Brussels and the surrounding region in the early 17th century through the travel journal of the Florentine artist. It starts with a tour through the Pentagon, from the Halle Gate to the former Schaerbeek Gate (Botanique), travelling mainly through the upper town, across neighbourhoods where emblematic buildings such as Coudenberg Palace and the Collegiate Church of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula were concentrated, as well as a significant number of aristocratic townhouses, including Hôtel de Bournonville and Hôtel d’Hoogstraeten. -

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2006. xvi + 440 pp. (Cloth US$ 30.00) TREVOR BURNARD Department of History University of Warwick Coventry CV4 7AL, U.K. <[email protected]> As one might expect from David Brion Davis, a foremost historian of slavery whose works have always been characterized by enormous erudition and a capacious awareness of the varieties of slavery over space and time, Inhuman Bondage is a superb summary of a vast body of literature in one of the most dynamic fields in all of historical scholarship. Beginning with slavery in antiquity, Davis adeptly summarizes principal trends in the historiography of slavery and antislavery (the abolition of slavery forms almost as important a theme in this work as the operations of slavery itself) until the end of the American Civil War. Readers of his previous works will not be surprised at his particular emphases. He stresses the cultural origins of slavery as beginning in ancient attempts to consider some categories of people not fully human. He takes issue with Orlando Patterson’s idea of slavery as a form of social death inso- far as Davis considers that defining people as property, akin to how animals are defined as property, is of central rather than secondary importance in what makes slavery a distinctive social and legal institution. -

This musical practice draws on an array of sounds that are distinctly local, yet certainly influenced by knowledge of and connections to the world at large. The sounds of Jamaica (reggae), Brazil (bossa nova), the United States (R&B, funk, disco) and India (sitar) amongst others can be heard and felt in the music. While the genre of jazz has largely been understood in reference to its origins in the United States, its dissemination across the world has become the focus of recent scholarly work. Jazz arrived in Trinidad and Tobago as early as the 1930s through film scores and radio broadcasts. However, the jazz emerging from Trinidad and Tobago today is quite distinct, sonically, from jazz in the United States. Critically, in this dissertation, I ask in what ways might the study of sound help to re- conceptualize the process of transnationalism. -
