  • Stairway to Heaven? Geographies of the Space Elevator in Science Fiction
ISSN 2624-9081 • DOI 10.26034/roadsides-202000306 Stairway to Heaven? Geographies of the Space Elevator in Science Fiction Oliver Dunnett Outer space is often presented as a kind of universal global commons – a space for all humankind, against which the hopes and dreams of humanity have been projected. Yet, since the advent of spaceflight, it has become apparent that access to outer space has been limited, shaped and procured in certain ways. Geographical approaches to the study of outer space have started to interrogate the ways in which such inequalities have emerged and sustained themselves, across environmental, cultural and political registers. For example, recent studies have understood outer space as increasingly foreclosed by certain state and commercial actors (Beery 2012), have emphasised narratives of tropical difference in understanding geosynchronous equatorial satellite orbits (Dunnett 2019) and, more broadly, have conceptualised the Solar System as part of Earth’s environment (Degroot 2017). It is clear from this and related literature that various types of infrastructure have been a significant part of the uneven geographies of outer space, whether in terms of long-established spaceports (Redfield 2000), anticipatory infrastructures (Gorman 2009) or redundant space hardware orbiting Earth as debris (Klinger 2019). collection no. 003 • Infrastructure on/off Earth Roadsides Stairway to Heaven? 43 Having been the subject of speculation in both engineering and science-fictional discourses for many decades, the space elevator has more recently been promoted as a “revolutionary and efficient way to space for all humanity” (ISEC 2017). The concept involves a tether lowered from a position in geostationary orbit to a point on Earth’s equator, along which an elevator can ascend and arrive in orbit.

  • The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
THE SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE Are we alone in the universe? Is the search for extraterrestrial intelligence a waste of resources or a genuine contribution to scientific research? And how should we communicate with other life-forms if we make contact? The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) has been given fresh impetus in recent years following developments in space science which go beyond speculation. The evidence that many stars are accompanied by planets; the detection of organic material in the circumstellar disks of which planets are created; and claims regarding microfossils on Martian meteorites have all led to many new empirical searches. Against the background of these dramatic new developments in science, The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence: a philosophical inquiry critically evaluates claims concerning the status of SETI as a genuine scientific research programme and examines the attempts to establish contact with other intelligent life-forms of the past thirty years. David Lamb also assesses competing theories on the origin of life on Earth, discoveries of ex-solar planets and proposals for space colonies as well as the technical and ethical issues bound up with them. Most importantly, he considers the benefits and drawbacks of communication with new life-forms: how we should communicate and whether we could. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is an important contribution to a field which until now has not been critically examined by philosophers. David Lamb argues that current searches should continue and that space exploration and SETI are essential aspects of the transformative nature of science. David Lamb is honorary Reader in Philosophy and Bioethics at the University of Birmingham.

THE PLANET MARS AND ITS INHABITANTS BY EROS URIDES (A MARTIAN) DEDICATION To the millions of God's children on this earth enthralled in darkness, for whom the solicitude of the Father is now in evidence, this book is dedicated. May it be a beacon to light the way of weary searchers after TRUTH. One hemisphere of Mars showing the North Polar Cap and the main Canal System covering the planet. The many thousands of small lateral canals, radiating from the larger waterways, and which form an important part of the general plan, have been purposely omitted from the above to avoid confusion. The circular spots and dots are the principal reservoirs used for impounding water for use during the long Martian summer. The dark areas shown in the drawing are Mars ancient sea bottoms now covered with vegetation. It will be observed that most of the canals are double, paralleling each other at a distance of about seventy-five miles. Centers of population are not shown for the reason that space is not available on so small a drawing. The City of Urid is situated adjacent to the reservoir in the center of drawing, just north of the equator. CONTENTS Chapter I.-EROS URIDES, of the City of Urid, planet Mars, the Author, introduces himself and his book THE PLANET MARS AND ITS INHABITANTS. Chapter II.-He describes the Population Centers, Temperatures and Climate. The whole Planet is gridironed with Canals. (See Diagram.) Chapter III.-He gives a full description of the marvelous Martian Canal System. Chapter IV.-Planetary Economy.

  • Mi-Go 1 Mi-Go
Mi-go 1 Mi-go An interpretation of the Mi-Go by Ruud Dirven Mi-go ("The Abominable Ones") is a Himalayan nickname for a race of extraterrestrials in the Cthulhu Mythos created by H. P. Lovecraft and others. The name was first applied to the creatures in Lovecraft's short story "The Whisperer in Darkness" (1931), elaborating on a reference to 'What fungi sprout in Yuggoth' in his sonnet cycle Fungi from Yuggoth (1929–30) which described the contrasting vegetation on alien dream-worlds. Summary The "Mi-go" are large, pinkish, fungoid, crustacean-like entities the size of a man; where a head would be, they have a "convoluted ellipsoid" composed of pyramided, fleshy rings and covered in antennae. According to two reports in the original short story, their bodies consist of a form of matter that does not occur naturally on Earth; for this reason, they do not register on ordinary photographic film. They are capable of going into suspended animation until softened and reheated by the sun or some other source of heat. They are about five feet (1.5 m) long, and their crustacean-like bodies bear numerous sets of paired appendages. They possess a pair of membranous bat-like wings which are used to fly through the "aether" of outer space (a scientific concept which is now discredited). The wings do not function well on Earth. Several other races in Lovecraft's Mythos also have wings like these. The Mi-go can transport humans from Earth to Pluto (and beyond) and back again by removing the subject's brain and placing it into a "brain cylinder", which can be attached to external devices to allow it to see, hear, and speak.

  • National Detention Standards
[Type here] [Type here] [Type here] Foreword INTRODUCTION U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a federal agency charged with enforcing the nation’s immigration laws in a fair and effective manner. ICE identifies, apprehends, detains, and removes individuals who are amenable to removal from the United States. ICE uses its immigration detention authority to effectuate this mission by securing individuals in custody while they await the outcome of their immigration proceedings and/or removal from the United States. ICE has important obligations under the U.S. Constitution and other federal and state law when it decides to keep an individual in custody. ICE detention standards ensure that detainees are treated humanely; protected from harm; provided appropriate medical and mental health care; and receive the rights and protections to which they are entitled. This revision of ICE’s National Detention Standards (NDS) reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to working with its state and local partners to enforce immigration laws and improve public safety and national security. These standards have been updated to better reflect the strong relationship ICE has with its law enforcement partners, including where detention facilities successfully manage their own populations and are willing to assist ICE with housing immigration detainees. BACKGROUND The original NDS were issued in 2000 by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), ICE’s predecessor agency. The NDS established consistent conditions of confinement, program operations, and management expectations within the agency’s detention system. Over the past 17 years, much has changed in immigration enforcement, including the growth of a network of dedicated immigration detention facilities, which are now largely covered by a separate set of standards – the Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS).
