The Study on the Integrated Rural Development of Former Sugarcane Plantation Area and Final Report the Pilot Project of La Luisa Area, Monte Plata Province 5.4 Model Area of Group C : Esperanza III Area 5.4.1 Natural Conditions (1) Topography and Geology Esperanza III, which belongs to Valverde Province in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, is located at the 12km northeast of Mao where is the seat of the provincial office and at the 33km northwest of Santiago where is the second largest city in the country. The area is at longitude 71°12’ W and latitude 18°27’ N. The farmland of the area is situated between the Yaque del Norte River and Northern Mountains and declines gently from north to south within 80m to 100m in altitude. The area mainly consists of fluvial deposits such as muck, limy sand, clay and gravel in the Quaternary by the Yaque del Norte River and its tributaries. (2) Meteorology Esperanza III is located in Cibao that is a granary of the Dominican Republic, and is 12-km far from Mao where meteorological data are collected. In Mao where is in the middle of Cibao Valley, annual rainfall records about 700-mm but Esperanza III is supposed to have more rainfall, more than 1000 mm, since the area is at the foot of Septentrional Mountains. A vegetation map shows that Esperanza III is a part of subtropical dry forest as the same as Tamayo. The meteorological data in Mao indicate that there are two rainy seasons (from May to June and from September to October) but more than six months have less than 5 rainy days. -

Situation: After the suspension of the construction project of new ports, emphasis was shifted to the strengthening of the existing ports, and it was decided to deepen Bahia Blanca and Quequen Ports. In late 1991, the dredging was completed to the depths of 40 - 45 feet at Bahia Blanca, while Quequen is being dredged to the depth of 40 feet. -

The Study on the Integrated Rural Development of Former Sugarcane Plantation Area and Final Report the Pilot Project of La Luisa Area, Monte Plata Province 5.2.7 Pilot Project for Agricultural Infrastructure Development (1) Outline of the Project The project area is located along the national road No.1, Santo Domingo – Monte Plata road, however there are no passable access roads inside the farming area distributed. Farm road development together with drainage improvement aims to improve road conditions in the farming area. The layout of the roads is shown in Table 5.8. The construction works was done between October 2002 and February 2003 during dry season. 5.2.8 Establishment of Experimental Farms (1) Outline of the Project Originally, three experimental farms were supposed to be established in La Luisa to collect basic data on the alternative crops to sugarcane. -

Disaster relief emergency fund (DREF) Dominican Republic: Hurricane Sandy DREF operation n° MDRDO006 3 November 2012 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross and Red Crescent emergency response. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters. CHF 199,637 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Dominican Red Cross (DRC) in delivering immediate assistance to some 900 families (4,500 beneficiaries). Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged. Summary: Hurricane Sandy caused strong winds and rains in the Dominican Republic, displacing over 22,000 people and affecting 1,957 houses. This DREF operation is supporting a total of 900 families affected in the provinces of Azua, Barahona, San Cristóbal and Santo Domingo providing immediate relief items including hygiene kits and mosquito nets, as well as a shelter kit to 100 targeted families who Clean water distribution in Azua by the Dominican Republic Red after the passage of Hurricane Sandy. This DREF operation is expected to be implemented over three months, and will therefore be completed by 2 February 2013; a Final Report will be made available three months after the end of the operation (by 2 May 2013). -

Esta comunidad tiene una gran importancia desde diversos puntos de vista por su condición de asentamiento humano ubicado en la periferia del Parque Nacional de Los Haitises, el más importante ecosistema dentro de uno de los más grandes biomas de toda la isla de la Hispaniola. Uno de los graves problemas que afectan la comunidad lo constituye el aprovisionamiento de agua potable, el cual es, a pesar de las soluciones que a corto plazo los residentes se han planteado, altamente deficiente en términos de calidad y cantidad. Este estudio, tal y como su nombre lo indica, propone una solución de corto y mediano plazo a los problemas de agua potable que confrontan, desde hace muchos años, los residentes de Sabana de los Javieres. Lordelo Back cover: Celestus warreni Photo by Milo Ko řínek Email: [email protected] Family Diploglossidae The lizard family Diploglossidae is distributed in the West Indies, Central America, and South America. The family contains three genera Celestus has 33 species and Diploglossus with 14 species. Both share a similar snout, elongated cylindrical body with short well developed limbs. The genus Ophiodes has 5 species. As the Latin name suggests, they have a snake-like body, with not front limbs and only small rudimentary hind limbs. The family species have a body covered by cycloid scales that are underlain by osteoderms having a distinctive, peaked, gliding surface. The family contains both egglayers and viviparous species. The larger species can produce more than 20 offspring. Savage et al (2008) list the members of the Diploglossidae with the claw as the definitive character: exposed claws in Celestus and claws sheated in the other genera. Pyron & Burbrink (2013) found Diploglossus and Celestus are strongly supported as paraphyletic with respect to each other and to Ophiodes , but they had data on only six taxa.
