Coming up with no alternatives, I came in through the back door, and saw my father kneeling on the floor with the kitchen table flipped upside down. His rough hands were hammering a shiny new nail into its leg. As he struck the nails head one last time, it became flush with the smooth wood. He leaned back and with the strength and precision that defined him, he lifted the table off the floor and flipped it right side up with an ease that I would always associate with him. With a look of pride and competency on his face, he began to turn his head away from the table and towards me coming into the house in all of my cold and pathetic glory. Before I could even begin to try justifying my transgression to him with a story about walk- ing on water or visiting the angry fish, he had already begun to yell. I quickly ran into my room and shut the door. And as I began to peel off my wet clothes that had been weighing me down, I wondered what it would be like to be a kitchen table. • 20 LITERARY I February 1,2007 I THE OBSERVER fordhamobserver, com

And what an exciting end it has shaped up to be. The two teams that were on track to have big seasons this year - the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts - have made it to Super Bowl XLI, right where many imagined they would end up. But with two sol- id teams fighting for the trophy, how do you determine who has the edge? It comes down to one thing - it is Peyton Manning's time and he will lead his team to victory. Manning was a crucial part of the Colts' 38-34 victory over New England, throwing for 349 yards with both a throwing and rushing , but there are some other Colts who will need to be playing at 110 per- cent if they want to earn a Super Bowl ring. Throw all the cli- ches and jinxes of Manning not winning a title out the window, because Manning has made it to the Bowl and there is no way he will go out lying down. The Colts' running game has been solid throughout the year, especially with Dominic Rhodes racking up yardage in the post season, but it's rookie Joseph Addai who will play a huge part in the Colts' win over Chicago. Continuing to play hard and already over the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the regu- lar season, Addai will be used to help Indianapolis rush for touchdowns after Manning gets his team into the red zone. Ad- dai will be seen in the end zone at least once during the game, even if he rushes for no more than 60 yards. The only thing that will help Manning more than his two running backs are his multiple receiving options. There is no doubt that Marvin Harrison will have a huge game as the NFL veteran always seems to be a safe option in the air for Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning gets a hug from his dad, Archie.
