~373 Report of Annual Membership and Board of Directors Meetings, American Friends of the Hebrew University, June 5th, 1968.

The Annual Membership meeting and the Board of Directors meeting were held on Wednesday, June 5th, 1968 at the office of the Corporation at University House, 11 East 69th Street, New York, New York.

The Chairman introduced Ambassador Avraham Harman, newly elected President of the Hebrew University of who reported to the meeting the current aims of the University as adopted by the Board of Governors at its last meeting. He stated the great need for increasing scholarship aid to the student body and the objective of the University to increase the number of students in graduate work and the necessity of providing facilities for the increasing number of foreign students, primarily from the . He reported on current plans to build desperately needed dormitories to house 2500 students on . The cost of these dormitories is 32 million Israeli pounds (approxi- mately $lO,OOO,OOO). He also reported on plans to renovate and utilize the existing buildings on Mt. Scopus. It is intended that by 1969 the Law Faculty, the Law Library, all first year Science Students, and the Archeological Research Departments will be con- ducting their studies on Mt. Scopus. This rehabilitation program will cost 14 million Israeli pounds ($4,000,OOO).

Ambassador Harman reported that the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Hebrew University would take place on July 24th, 1968. The 50th Anniversary of the laying of the foundation cornerstone by Chaim Weizmann on July 24th, 1918, will be a festive occasion highlighted by the presence of the President of the State of Israel Zalman Shazar and the Prime Minister, Levi Eshko1. He urged every member of the Board to try to be present on this historic occasion.

In connection with the 50th Anniversary celebration there will be special ground-breaking ceremonies for a number of buildings and dormitories that have already been committed by donors to be built on Mt. Scopus. It was announced that Mr. Joseph Mazer, Treasurer of the American Friends and a Deputy Chairman of the Hebrew University's Board of Governors has accepted the Chairmanship of the fundraising effort of the dormitory and rehabilitation program on Mt. Scopus.

The Chairman of the Board reported on a recent meeting with the heads of the University in Jerusalem and the current priorities of the University: - 2 -

1- Mount Scopus Dormitory Program 2- Rehabilitation of present buildings on Mt. Scopus 3- Scholarship program for Israeli students 4- Scholarships for overseas students 5- Completion of all outstanding unfinished bUilding projects already committed

Irving Mitchell Felt, Chairman of the Society of Founders and Chairman of the Agnon Dinner reported on the highly successful Dinner held on June 4th. General Nathaniel L. Goldstein, President of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, received the Agnon Medal which was introduced by Irving M. Felt in 1967 with the presence of Israel's first Nobel ~rize Winner Author S. Y. Agnon. The presence of more than 500 leaders from and other parts of the country in an overflowing Ballroom was a personal tribute to General Goldstein and Ambassador Harman as well as to a growing recognition of the important role of the Hebrew University.

In addition to the announcement of many new Founders, Joseph I. Lubin took the occasion to announce his donation to construct a building which will house a new Graduate School of Business Administration. Majorie Hyman, Geraldine Kory and Cynthia Peltz, daughters of the late Ben Abrams announced a SUb- stantial contribution to name the Central Medical Electronics Laboratories in memory of their beloved father.

Following Mr. Felt's report, the Board expressed its appre- ciation to him by selecting him unanimously to receive the Agnon Award on May 26th, 1969.

The Chairman of the Board in reporting on the activities of the past year gave speCial praise to Max M. Low and his wife EVlynne. His exemplary devotion and support of the affairs of the community and his particular concern of Jewish problems and of the Hebrew University was highlighted. With unanimous approval the Board selected Mr. Max M. Low to be the recipient of the Mount Scopus Award to be given at the American Friends of the Hebrew University National banquet on Monday, November 25th, at the New York Waldorf Astoria.

The Office of Academic Affairs reported that more than 1000 American students have already been accepted for studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for the next academic year. It was pointed out that included in this group were more than 85 graduate students.

Dr. Louis Freedman, Chairman of the American Friends of the Hebrew University Committee to build a new School of Pharmacy, reported that the $2,000,000 needed to complete this project was near at hand. He advised that every effort was being made to complete the campaign by the end of the calendar year 1968. He advised that there will be a major dinner in New York in December which will culminate - 3 - the campaign. He further announced that preliminary plans and studies are being made for a continual campaign to maintain and operate the School of Pharmacy at the Hebrew University so that this important and vital School can be self-sustaining.

Mr. Julian Venezky reported on the financial status of the University and of the American Friends of the Hebrew University. He stated that the University has achieved a balanced operating bUdget in the amount of Israel pounds 74.250,000 and a development budget of Israel pounds 24,195,000. He reported that in the fiscal year ending March 31st, 1968, the American Friends had received more pledges and individual cash gifts than ever before.

The Chairman reported on the status of the Scholarship Program and the goal of providing 2000 scholarships by the end of this year.

President Nathaniel L. Goldstein reported on the ballot taken of the Founders of the Truman Center. Based on the recommendation of the Founders the Board elected the following Founders as Trustees of the Truman Center:

In addition to the Founders. the following were also elected as Trustees by the Board: David Noyes, Administrative Assistant to President Truman, Arthur Goldberg, former Supreme Court Justice and former Ambassador to the . and Nathaniel L. Goldstein, President of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, and former Attorney General of the State of New York.

Mr. Seymour Fishman. the Executive Vice President. commented on the urgent need of ever greater efforts on the part of the American Friends to achieve the vital responsibilities which we have undertaken in support of the Hebrew University. He emphasized that each member of the Board must assume leadership in the program of the American Friends in his respective community.
