'Racing Is Life. Anything Before Or After Is Just Waiting.'
Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso recently went under the hammer at Christie’s in Monterey, offering another reminder of a man whose motoring exploits mirrored some of his most famous onscreen performances. Christopher Kanal pays tribute to a legendary car driven by a screen icon. Kam Williams, “The “12 Years a Slave” Interview: Steve McQueen”, The new journal and guide, February 03, 2014 Artist and filmmaker Steven Rodney McQueen was born in London on October 9, 1969. His critically-acclaimed directorial debut, Hunger, won the Camera d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. He followed that up with the incendiary offering Shame, a well- received, thought-provoking drama about addiction and secrecy in the modern world. In 1996, McQueen was the recipient of an ICA Futures Award. A couple of years later, he won a DAAD artist’s scholarship to Berlin. Besides exhibiting at the ICA and at the Kunsthalle in Zürich, he also won the coveted Turner Prize. He has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Documenta, and at the 53rd Venice Biennale as a representative of Great Britain. His artwork can be found in museum collections around the world like the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou. In 2003, he was appointed Official War Artist for the Iraq War by the Imperial War Museum and he subsequently produced the poignant and controversial project Queen and Country commemorating the deaths of British soldiers who perished in the conflict by presenting their portraits as a sheet of stamps. Steve and his wife, cultural critic Bianca Stigter, live and work in Amsterdam which is where they are raising their son, Dexter, and daughter, Alex. Here, he talks about his latest film, 12 Years a Slave, which has been nominated for 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. -

Editorial Necsus
EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF MEDIA STUDIES www.necsus-ejms.org Editorial Necsus NECSUS 6 (2), Autumn 2017: 1–3 URL: https://necsus-ejms.org/editorial-necsus-autumn-2017/ Keywords: dress, editorial From the early days of film studies, costumes have been analysed as an im- portant element of the mise-en-scène and stardom, as they help shape identi- ties and define subjectivities, crafting the stars. There is no question that cos- tumes help create meaning, no less today than in the heyday of classical cin- ema. More recently, haute couture has entered film as a topic, just as fashion designers have become the subjects of biopics. In recent years, fashion films have become an interesting vehicle for large fashion brands that were able to attract prestigious auteurs (Roman Polanski, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, et al). Indeed, the whole ecosystem of fashion has been rup- tured by the effects of digital distribution, blogs, and social media. The special section of the Autumn 2017 issue of NECSUS is devoted to this key element in photographic practices and cinematic and audiovisual storytelling. #Dress investigates fashion and costume as theoretical and ana- lytical concerns in media studies, and the analyses demonstrate how dress and costume contribute to the production of meaning. #Dress also presents the many echoes of Roland Barthes’ seminal publication The Fashion System (1967) and the ‘language’ of fashion magazines as an analytical tool to address theoretical questions of identity, politics, and cultural history. Contributors to this special section include Marie Lous Baronian, Giuliana Bruno, Isabelle Freda, Šárka Gmiterková & Miroslava Papežová, and Frances Joseph. -

Frankenheimer on Location in Canada
Frankenheimer on Location in Canada By Gerald Pratley Fall 1999 Issue of KINEMA THE DISTINGUISHED American filmmaker, John Frankenheimer, has returned to Canada and is making his fourth motion picture there called Reindeer Games presently filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, for Miramax. The main players are Gary Sinese, Charlize Theron, Ben Affleck and Clarence Williams III. Frankenheimer is working from a script by Ehren Kruger, the writer’s second screenplay following Arlington Way, released this summer. Frankenheimer first came to British Columbia twenty years ago tofilm Prophecy, a horror story rooted in the pollution of the environment by the logging industries. He returned ten years later to Calgary, Drumheller and High River, to film Dead Bang, a brilliant piece of work based on the true story of a vicious white supremacy movement. He was back a year later, to Bragg Creek, Canmore and Calgary, to make The Fourth War, set on the snowbound Czech-West German frontier during the Cold War and relating a thoughtful moral tale of two generals, one American the other Russian, and their conflicting ideological beliefs. Now he is snowbound once again high in the Cypress Bowl mountains of West Vancouver shooting all-night scenes in freezing-cold weather with the unit bathed in the eerie light of Musko location lamps raised high in the dark sky. Affleck plays a newly released prisoner who assumes another man’s identity and findshimself involved in a casino robbery at Christmas time. The script appealed to Frankenheimer as a thoughtfully written story concerning men who were born evil and have become a violent sore to plague a complaisant society. -
