The War Memorial Rolls of and District 1914- 1918 and 1939-1945

The Origins of the WW1 Roll

In 1996, the original object of compiling the Roll was to show that the names on the existing First World War Maidenhead War Memorial only represent some of those who lost their lives, but it soon became apparent that this partial representation also applied to other local memorials as well. Later requirements during 1998 meant that this original list needed to be amended in order to become a more complete Roll of Honour. Then, having updated as far as possible the list of names for the First World War, a similar exercise was then undertaken for the Second World War.

For the original objective, I decided that the list should be compiled from local and easily accessible sources which would have been publicly available at the time the original Rolls were compiled. This was to prove that the original Rolls could and should have been more complete had the authorities bothered to do so.

The primary source was "The Maidenhead Advertiser" which printed comprehensive lists of both those who were serving in the Armed Forces and those who had lost their lives, at least up to May 1916, when the paper continued only with weekly updates, presumably for morale purposes, as the lists now covered many pages. Printed lists of those who appeared on various memorials were also given later, and in some cases, the original memorial itself has been checked, for it has been noted that in several cases, the final list of names on the memorial does not match the printed lists. With regards to the lists published, the sources for these were presumably the War Office notifications to relatives, which were then, but not always, passed on to the Advertiser, either in whole or in part. However, even these lists were not complete, since consultation with the Births, Deaths, Marriages and In Loving Memory columns both during and after the war have revealed many other names. Inevitably, spelling and other errors resulted, and it has not always been possible to correct or prove several names or details, whilst it is also probable that in scanning through the many pages of newsprint, certain names have been inadvertently overlooked. Finally, many local men served with the Royal Regiment, and reference has therefore been made to: "Soldiers Died in Great War 1914-1919 - Royal Berkshire Regiment" Part 52 HMSO, published 1921. Note that this official Roll is incomplete, and appears to include errors.

In 1998, following a request to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for details regarding graves of local armed services personnel maintained by them, a more comprehensive roll has resulted, both with regard to supplying details which were not known earlier and also names which had not been previously identified. Finally, further amendments were made in November 1998, following information supplied by members of the public.

Subsequently, no further names have been added, but additional information has been added where applicable.

In a Special Meeting of the Town Council held on the 18th. of November 1918, it was decided that the Memorial was to include all those who died from not just Maidenhead, but Bray and parishes as well. Whilst the authorities in Maidenhead wasted time, according to many contemporary residents, in deciding where to place the memorial (May 1920), how much it was going to cost and so on, Bray, , Cookham and announced that they were going to erect their own memorials. This they achieved some time before the Maidenhead memorial was finally unveiled on 5 December 1920, and indeed most of the local churches and schools also had their own memorials in place as well. Thus, by the time names were being compiled for the Maidenhead memorial after June 1919, many of those eligible were already destined to be commemorated elsewhere. On the other, the delay meant that names could be included of those previously posted as Missing In Action and also of those who succumbed to their injuries postwar, especially those who had been gassed. This also resulted in names being omitted from those memorials erected earlier.

Regarding the names of those who appeared, or did not appear, on the Memorial, the main problem was the method of obtaining the names in the first place. The Borough decided that it would be left entirely in the hands of relatives to supply full details, by collecting the appropriate form from the Town Hall, filling it out and returning it. This policy was then announced by publishing the details in “The Maidenhead Advertiser". However, it had been noted in the Advertiser that the mayor had sent out some 3,450 notices, but by March 1919, only some 200 had been returned. Arthur Upson also declared that with regard to the form from the Town Clerk's Office, it was insufficient for relations to send a postcard or letter without details. As an example, this declaration was enforced to the extent that following a request by the Town Clerk for further details on a list of names published in “The Maidenhead Advertiser”, the name of Seaman Gunner John Fry was removed from the list of names designated for the Maidenhead memorial! Fortunately, those responsible in Holyport, Bray and were not so cold hearted, and he is, at least, remembered on those memorials.

Page 3  Leslie Ritson-Smith, Maidenhead, November 2012 Problems Caused by the Method of Compilation of the WW1 Roll

The Borough's policy basically removed any responsibility from the Borough for the accuracy of the Memorial Roll, and therefore caused most of the ensuing problems, since it had failed to take into consideration several vital factors: * Many relatives could not respond since they were no longer resident in the area and did not know how to register. If they sent a letter or card to the Town Hall in lieu of the correct form, this, according to Mr. A.Upson, was insufficient. * There are several cases of families having emigrated prior to the war, but their sons returned to Maidenhead and enlisted there. Consequently, if any of these were killed in action, it was highly unlikely that their relatives could call into the Town Hall for the necessary form, unless they were sent one. * In more extreme cases, there may not have been any surviving relatives at all, in which case it would have been left to any friends that they may have had in the area to register their names.

In addition to the above there were other secondary reasons for errors or omissions in the lists. In some cases, relatives were still not aware of what had happened to the deceased, even by 1920, especially if they had been posted as Missing in Action. Final confirmation by the War Office was often finally given long after the original listings were compiled. Then there were the problems associated by deaths taking place after the end of the war, these being caused either by wounds, gas-poisoning or long-term illnesses such as pneumonia in particular. Additionally, in the Maidenhead district, another cause of confusion was the fact in addition to any existing civilian hospitals, there were several military hospitals set up in the Maidenhead area, and these included: * 2 November 1914 - 2 November 1916: Lambert Convalescent Home, Moor Hall, Cookham. * June 1915 - April 1919: The Duchess of Connaught Canadian Military Hospital, Taplow. (Note: the official Canadian Hospital War Diary gives the hospital this title, although it was generally referred to as the Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Cliveden.) * June 1916: Maidenhead Technical Institute now used as a Red Cross Hospital. A large number of casualties unfortunately succumbed to their wounds, and in some cases, the deceased again did not come from this area but their names were probably submitted for inclusion on local memorials by any friends made locally, or even nursing staff at the hospitals.

Finally, to add to the confusion, there were many other soldiers in the Maidenhead area who had no local connection all, other than the fact that they had been billeted in Maidenhead when signing-up, and if they had been killed in action, their names were sometimes submitted by local friends.

If the figure of 3,450, representing the forms reputed to have been sent out in the Maidenhead area by the mayor, was based on a local official estimate of casualties, then it can be seen that the total of 357 names which actually appeared on the Maidenhead memorial is only a pitifull 10% of those who should have been remembered. It seems extremely regrettable that you could give your life for your country, but if a few words of explanation were missing from a specified piece of paper, you were simply destined to be forgotten by the Borough.

In summary, although there are some names whose eligibility for inclusion on any of the memorials may be questioned, there are undoubtedly many others who should be commemorated. Indeed, there are frequent instances of someone being named on a memorial whilst a father, son or brother has been omitted for whatever reason. If, tragically, there were no surviving relatives in the Maidenhead area, then their names will have probably disappeared for ever.

Note A) Not all of the above memorials still exist. Note B) Although a name on the Roll may have no Memorial entries shown, it is possible that they may still appear on Memorials outside of the designated area. This particularly applies in the Cookham - Cookham Dean area where there are several known instances of names appearing on memorials at Marlow and Wooburn, both in Buckinghamshire.

2) The War Memorials printed in italics are considered to be outside of Maidenhead and District, but have been included for two reasons: firstly, if names already on the Roll appeared later on any of the italicised memorials then these entries only have been annotated. Secondly, there were several names already on the Roll, but at the time of initial input, no memorial details were known, and only after extensive research was carried out were the memorial details traced, and so these have been added simply to avoid wasting research time. Complete listings of names on the italicised memorials are to be found at the end of the Memorial Roll.

Page 5  Leslie Ritson-Smith, Maidenhead, November 2012 3) All surnames which are printed in Bold were added to the original list from records supplied by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in May 1998, and in some cases, information from the Commission has been added to the original entries.

4) All surnames which are underlined are suspected of being duplicates. See also Notes entry.

5) Entries which have a  in the CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) column have a Cemetery record with the Commission, and further details are available from them. Other names may be on record with the CWGC, but if no places names of relatives were noted, then they will not have been identified during the records search.

6) Where there is either some definite doubt regarding an entire entry or a individual details, then these have been printed in Italics, and if there is a high probability of alternative details applying, then these have also been printed in Italics with the addition of a ? mark.

7) Even where there are no italics, I am unable to guarantee that all the information is correct, since I have been dependent on local printed sources. I have tried, within reason, to correct original spelling and typographical errors, and in some cases I believe that other errors still exist, such as the existence of two W.Chitty's on the Maidenhead Memorial itself. (See note 4). There are also a few other cases where I feel that two separate entries do, in fact, refer to the same person but cannot be proved. For example, whereas the proper Christian may have been George, the person could often be called Jack, and so two different references could occur, or in other cases, only the initials are given in one reference and a single Christian name given in another.

8) There are some names listed, including some with few or no details given, about whom it is almost impossible to prove if they did actually come from this area, since these names were either reported in the Advertiser from details supplied by relatives, or given in the Births Deaths and Marriages entries, but no addresses being given.

9) Another problem encountered was the fact that during World War 1, many serviceman died as a result of gassing, other appalling wounds or long-term illnesses and in particular pneumonia, well after the cessation of hostilities and the compilation of rolls for the various memorials. Whilst some names have been included up to 1920, undoubtedly there were others who died after the memorials were erected, but who were equally deserving of being included, especially all those serviceman who were posted as Missing in Action. On the other hand, there are one or two cases of names who, in all reality, should not have been included, since they died after the war from other causes, and in one case as a result of murder.

10) When listing where a person came from, the entry could be either where he was born, if he was from outside of the Maidenhead district (in which case there may well be a local reference under Notes), or where he resided at the time of enlisting. In some cases, a local place name may possibly be that of a surviving relative, since this was not necessarily made clear at the time. Another possible misleading factor is that in the Official 1921 Royal Berkshire Regiment Roll, some references to 'where born' only indicated the Parish, not necessarily the town or village, hence, for example, residents of Cox Green were given as being of Bray, whilst residents of what is now and Furze Platt could come under Cookham.

Page 6  Leslie Ritson-Smith, Maidenhead, November 2012 The Method of Compiling the WW2 Roll

In early 1947, the Town Clerk requested that those who had relatives entitled to be placed on the memorial should communicate the names to him. There was, however, a significant change made from the World War 1 requirements: only those who resided in Maidenhead itself would qualify, rather than including the surrounding district. Subsequently, four lists were published in “The Maidenhead Advertiser” from February to May of that year, giving a total of 166 names, even though reports published in the newspaper during the war gave many more additional names. Again, there were the usual problems of family members either being unaware of the request, especially if they were not local residents, and therefore unable to respond, or more tragically, there simply being no living relatives at all. It was therefore left to friends in the area to submit their names.

In the Shadow of the Cross

Gaze on this cross of stone with arms outspread As if to bless the suffering and bereft, Or point the thoughts of those who still are left To realms beyond; and when you've read Engraved upon its base the honoured dead, And marked the many offerings that surround With ernest thoughts and memory profound Of some, or one, who earth no more shall tread, Then silently survey this hallowed spot Where comes one loving heart in lonely grief To lay a humble tribute, hard begot, While unbid tears to sad heart give relief; One kiss upon the name, one tearful blot - A life of sorrow in that moment brief.

D.Lewis, Maidenhead January 1921
