  • Trial Bay Gaol Conservation Management Plan
2.0 Trial Bay Gaol: the Site and its History 2.1 Location and Site Description Trial Bay Gaol occupies a landmark position on the tip of Laggers Point at Arakoon. The gaol has extensive views in most directions and it is also clearly visible from a range of vantage points including South West Rocks. The site is approximately 500km north of Sydney and south of Brisbane, mid-way between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. The closest large town is Kempsey, inland on the Macleay River. The site is at the southern edge of Trial Bay. While Arakoon is the local village, South West Rocks is the main town of the area. The Arakoon Conservation Area forms the northern edge of a series of national parks and conservation areas the largest of which is Hat Head National Park. Trial Bay Gaol is one of a series of historic sites in the locality, the other major site being Smoky Cape Lighthouse Group. The gaol was constructed on a granite outcrop as close to the point as possible with the intent of placing the workforce for the breakwater construction immediately adjacent to the worksite. The proximity can be seen by the quarry excavation almost abutting the northern edge of the gaol wall, requiring stabilising of the rockface in recent years. The gaol was also carefully located with a mind to security and the narrow headland proved a relatively easy site to guard. Early photographs and plans show the gaol site with its demarcation and protective lines set within a cleared landscape to assist in guarding the perimeter.

  • ACT Democrats
AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRATS (ACT DIVISION) SUBMISSION TO THE ACT LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES REDISTRIBUTION 2003 Introduction In March 2000, The ACT Democrats submitted a proposed redistribution of electoral boundaries to the ACT Electoral Commission (“the Commission”), which was not then taken up by the Redistribution Committee (“the Committee”). However, the ACT Democrats still believe our suggestion provided a more sensible layout of electorates for the ACT Legislative Assembly elections than exists at present. This submission presents a modified version of our previous proposal, reflecting the changes in population distribution since then, and reviews a range of social, economic and environmental data to support our conclusions. The ACT Democrats continue to support the principle that electoral boundaries should place electors into groups that best reflect their common interests, demographics and spatial location. In particular, the ACT Democrats continue to oppose the division of Gungahlin between two electorates, believing that it is unwise to divide a small suburban cluster with similar electoral interests, and particularly one that is in the early stages of community development and representation. Secondly, the ACT Democrats continue to believe that the inclusion of Gungahlin in the central electorate of Molonglo does not represent any meaningful community of interest. This creates an electorate with little spatial integration and few social, economic or developmental commonalities. This submission begins with a short discussion of demographic change in Canberra, but will focus principally on the northern electoral boundary dividing Ginninderra and Molonglo. It will also discuss the Southern boundary between Brindabella and Molonglo, as well as touch upon some issues surrounding the Electoral Act 1992 (“the Act”).

  • Down but Not out in the Bush: Women's Experiences of Depression
DOWN BUT NOT OUT IN THE BUSH: WOMEN’S EXPERIENCES OF DEPRESSION IN RURAL NEW SOUTH WALES Stephanie Johnson Bachelor of Social Work Master of Social Work Supervisors Associate Professor Mark Brough Dr Rosalyn Darracott Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Public Health and Social Work Faculty of Health Queensland University of Technology 2018 Keywords Depression Feminist Rural Support Women 2 Down But Not Out in the Bush: Women’s Experiences of Depression in Rural NSW Abstract Biomedical research reports that depression is twice as common in women as men (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Piccinelli & Wilkinson, 2000). Rural women’s experiences of depression are of concern because of the barriers they face in accessing services and health care, due in part to factors such as isolation, violence, stigma, stoicism, and poverty (Alston et al., 2006). Despite numerous studies on depression, the literature contains only one mixed methods study and one qualitative study that address the topic of rural Australian women’s experiences of depression. This thesis argues that women’s experiences and experiential knowledge, as well as the challenges faced by women living in the bush, have not been adequately considered by previous research and that the accounts of these women are valid as a source of knowledge in their own right. Hearing from women about their lived experiences provides a rich source of information that may not be revealed without a qualitative study that begins and ends with the women as the central focus. The overall purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of women who were experiencing depression within the context of rural NSW.
