City of Littleton Page 1 Printed on 4/21/2016 Littleton Center City of Littleton 2255 West Berry Avenue Littleton, CO 80120 Staff Communication File #: ID# 16-73, Version: 1 Agenda Date: April 26, 2016 Subject: Brief overview of Parks, Recreation, and Trails Master Plan Presented By: Mike Braaten, Deputy City Manager Greenplay, the City’s consultant, will be presenting the draft of the Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan to a joint meeting the City Council and the Board of Directors of South Suburban Parks and Recreation District on Tuesday, April 26. Staff wanted to call out some areas of the plan that Council may find most interesting and provide some additional information on the process/next steps. Council is encouraged to review the entire document, but the gist of the Plan can be found in the executive summary. The executive summary walks the reader through the planning process, the various analysis and inventory of sites completed and the consultant recommendations as a result of the analysis and outreach they conducted. The goals, action plan and suggested prioritization starts on page 8 of the executive summary. The full narrative on the recommendations starts on page 102 of the plan. In past study sessions and during staff review, it was requested that specific needs and recommendations be called out. This information is discussed starting on page 105 of the plan, “Level of Service Improvements” with specific analysis and recommendations for low-scoring park components and modifiers found in Appendix F, page 14. This information, combined with information maintained by SSPR will be useful in the future as the City and SSPR work to prioritize improvements at facilities in Littleton. Not included in the document, but provided to staff, is the statistically-valid survey report findings (reviewed at a joint study session earlier this year) and the full site inventory report. When the master plan is adopted, staff will post the adopted plan online and will include the survey and site inventory reports. Next Steps: Greenplay will make final revisions to the document and will present the plan to the Littleton Planning Board on May 9th. The plan is slated for City Council adoption on May 17. As part of the recommendations in the plan, the SSPR Board will be asked to adopt the plan as well at a future board meeting. Roosevelt was first elected president a group of reporters sang "Home on the Range" on his doorstep in New York City. He asked them to repeat it, and made the statement, so it was said, that it was his favorite song. Later he often listened to the ballad at the White House, and it was reported that at Warm Springs he frequently led his guests in singing it. A rich academic conversation exists exploring connections between the mythic power of the American frontier and nineteenth century constructions of hegemonic masculinity; this project adds to that conversation by considering the dynamic relationship between frontier narratives and boyhood. This is a cultural history, assessing prominent nineteenth century cultural forms, such as the dime novel and the Wild West show, through the vivid interplay of frontier mythos and boyhood. As the wild horse is almost a thing of the past, soon there will be no one living competent to describe the process authoritatively. There are few men now living who have had a very wide experience in catching wild horses. Among them I will mention two whom I consider the very highest authority, Mr. Thomas A. Hightower, now living in California, and Mr. Wal­ ter Harris Brown. I do not know the whereabouts of Mr. Brown. At last report, in the late '90s, he was at Cripple Creek, Colorado, with a herd of burros to sell to the miners. I received my first tutelage from Mr. Jerry McGahan, com­ monly known throughout the United States as "Wild Horse" .Terry. He usually corralled his horses either at his home ranch five miles west of Pawnee Buttes, Weld County, Colorado, or at Indian Cave, twenty miles east of the Buttes. In the summer of 1886 Bob and Tom Hightower went to the Panhandle of 'l'exas, chased around all summer and caught noth­ ing, although they both were first class wild horse men. The reason for failure was shortage of saddle stock. In the spring of 1887 the brothers asked mr to join them as I had several saddle horses.

Slagle 2006 ABSTRACT Representations of the frontier through the early twentieth century have been subject to two sets of critical criteria: the conventional aesthetic expectations of the particular genres and forms in which westerns are produced, and the popular cultural demand for imitative “authenticity” or faithfulness to the “real west.” “In the Flesh” probes how literary history is bound up with the history of performance westerns that establish the criteria of “authenticity” that text westerns seek to fulfill. The dissertation demonstrates how the impulse to verify western authenticity is part of a post-Civil War American nationalism that locates the frontier as the paradigmatic American socio-topography. It argues westerns produced in a variety of media sought to distance themselves from their status as art forms subject to the critical standards of particular genres and to represent themselves as faithful transcriptions of popular frontier history. The primary signifier of historicity in all these forms is the technical ability to represent authentic bodies capable of performing that history. Postbellum westerns, in short, seek to show their audiences history embodied “in the flesh” of western performers. “In the Flesh” is therefore divided into two sections: the first analyzes performance westerns, including stage drama, Wild West, and film, that place bodies on display for the immediate appraisal of audiences.
