2 February 1947

Day Time Summary of Events 10 - Wg Cdr PUSTELUIAK assumed the duties of Polish Deputy Station Commander with effect from 10 February 1947. 15 - With effect from 15 February 1947, PAF [Polish Air Force] personnel came under the terms of AMO [Air Ministry Order] A521/45, i.e. they are now under RAF Administration and Air Force Act. - - During this month, further steps were taken towards completing the transfer of the personnel from the PAF into the RAF. Four PRC NCOs were given a short Drill Course at HUCKNALL and they started to instruct Polish personnel of the PRC in English Drill. Station Commander carried out English Drill with all Senior Officers. Parades were also held by respective Squadrons, during which English Drill was practised. Progress has been held up owing to inclement weather and the lack of a parade ground. English classes were commenced and all PRC personnel attended 4 hours per week. The instructors were found among Polish officers and NCOs. At that time, RAF HUCKNALL, near DERBY, was the location of the Headquarters of the Polish Resettlement Corps (RAF); it moved to RAF WATNALL, near Nottingham. Unusually strong winter weather disorganized and partly paralysed the usual Station Routine. Heavy snow falls and drifts cut the Station off from the outside world on several occasions. Supplies of food and fuel were maintained with difficulties. For a short period, Station Cookhouses had to bake their own bread, and fuel consumption for heating was reduced by 50%. During that period, the Station answered several calls for help by local Civil Authorities. Approximately 150 men were engaged for a few days in cleaning roads in the area, and another party of 150 men helped to clear the road to LOUTH. In spite of the inclement weather, the general health of personnel was very good. The general discipline and spirit of the Station is improving. Repatriation to Poland and emigration to other countries is progressing slowly. 94 SNCOs and airmen of the PAF were despatched to No 90 Transit Camp in Scotland for repatriation to Poland, and 48 SNCOs and airmen from the Station were demobilised and despatched to other countries, namely: France 23; Belgium 12; Holland 1; Ireland 2; USA 2; South Africa 5; and India 1. Some progress was also made in settling personnel from the PRC into civilian jobs. 31 NCOs and airmen were granted 28 days’ unpaid leave, pending their release into civil life during the month of February. - - PRESENT STRENGTH British Personnel

In spite of all these difficulties, a generally good state of health was maintained. The discipline and morale of the personnel on the Unit is still improving. November 1947

Day Time Summary of Events - - SPORT Football was the main sport for November, with two inter-Station matches and many practice matches taking place. 6 - DUNHOLME LODGE’s combined Polish and British team played RAF SCAMPTON on 6 November. The DUNHOLME LODGE team gained the lead during the first few minutes of the game and maintained it until the end, the final score being 3-2. 13 - The Station all-British team suffered a defeat at the hands of the GAINSBOROUGH Police team on 13 November. A hard, fast game resulted in a win for the visitors, score 4-0. 27 - DUNHOLME LODGE Polish and British team met a far superior team in RAF Station, CRANWELL, on 27 November, conceding 7 goals before the end of play: final score 7-0. These recent reverses have stimulated the team to greater efforts, enthusiasm has increased, more practice matches have been arranged and all members are looking forward to the time when they will avenge these defeats.

16 Day Time Summary of Events - - ENTERTAINMENT During November, there were two dances in the Station NAAFI, one being an All-Ranks Dance and the other for Cpls and below. There were the usual weekly Gramophone Recitals in the ‘Polish Hearth’. ‘Housey-housey’ [old-fashioned term for bingo] has become a popular pastime with the Polish personnel and is played twice a week in the Station NAAFI. The proceeds are added to the Station Commander’s Benevolent Fund. The Allied forces set up cultural organizations to run national centres, or ‘Hearths’, at their units, where their personnel could relax in familiar surroundings and keep their culture alive. The first such organization to be set up was the ‘Ognisko Polskie’ (‘Polish Hearth’). The Hearths were supposed to be funded by their own governments but in reality they were heavily subsidised by the British Council, which had been founded in 1934 to promote the life, language and culture of Britain overseas. As a result, the British Council exerted a heavy influence on the activities of the Hearths and, instead of being places for rest and relaxation as originally envisaged, they were more orientated towards cultural activities, such as classical music recitals, literary readings, poetry discussions and historical lectures. Author Alan Brown asserts that, ‘In effect, the national houses were little more than tools of the British Council in its mission to promote British culture, and it had a relatively captive audience and chose to maintain its profile by acting as financier, protecting its investment by packing the controlling directorates with its own people.’ (Brown, A. (2011) ‘Flying for Freedom: The Allied Air Forces in the RAF 1939-45’, Second Edition. Stroud: The History Press.) - - EDUCATION An additional 60 Officers attended the English classes during the month, which are progressing satisfactorily. A weekly Discussion Group (on Thursdays) is held in the Officers’ Mess and is well attended. With effect from 1 November, Mr DEAN (civilian Education Officer) assumed duties of the Station Education Officer vice Fg Off OSTER, who is now the Entertainments Officer. - - RELEASE TO STUDIES 3 Officers, 5 SNCOs and 14 Airmen were released to Studies during the month. - - RELEASE AND DISCHARGE TO CIVIL EMPLOYMENT 1 Officer, 8 SNCOs, 7 Airmen and 3 WAAFs left the Unit to take up some form of civil employment during November. This brings the total figures for personnel released for employment to 159 Officers, 239 SNCOs and 362 Airmen/women. - - POSTINGS ON LOAN TO RAF STATIONS The following figures show the numbers of personnel who were posted on loan to various RAF Stations during the month of November: 7 Officers, Nil SNCOs, Nil Airmen/women. - - REPATRIATION AND EMIGRATION 10 Officers, 130 Airmen/women were despatched to Transit Camps during the month en route to a port of embarkation. - - APPLICATION TO JOIN THE REGULAR AIR FORCE The month’s applications to join the Regular Air Force now bring the total figures to 115 Officers, 61 SNCOs, 14 Airmen and 1 WAAF. Flight Lieutenant BARTHOLOMEW posted to No 5 PDC BURTON WOOD on 27 August 1948, pending posting to BAFO [British Air Forces of Occupation]. On 15 July 1945, the RAF’s Second Tactical Air Force, which was already on the ground in Germany, was renamed The British Air Forces of Occupation (BAFO). Its role was to provide support to the ground occupation forces, technical supervision of the disbandment of the German Air Force, and routine training. The onset of the Cold War changed the relationship that the Allies had with their former enemy, and West Germany gradually became a partner rather than a conquered enemy. The RAF took on a defensive rather than occupying role, so BAFO’s name changed back to Second Tactical Air Force on 1 September 1951. - - STATION STRENGTH British Personnel
