Governors’ Report To Parents

November 2013

To All Parents of Students

This is the twenty-third Annual Governors’ Report to Parents. There is no longer a statutory requirement for Governors to meet formally with parents and, as the meeting has not attracted many parents in recent years, no such meeting will be held again this year.

However, if you have any queries or concerns please send these in writing to the Headmaster or to the Chairman of Governors and they will be dealt with appropriately.

M Davies Clerk to the Governing Board

Chairman's Introduction

This is my first Governors’ Annual Report to Parents as Chairman of the Board of Governors. However, I have served as a Governor on the Board of since June 2005, and I should like to record my sincere thanks to my predecessor, Richard Cunis, for his tireless work during his period in office.

This Report provides you with details of the students’ achievements during the last year and I am delighted to inform you that the School has enjoyed another successful year. Examination results were again remarkably strong against a background where national benchmarks have been raised.

The Governing Body is committed to learning from the experience of parents and students at the school. We consider fully what we learn from the regular and comprehensive surveys and from other meetings. The student voice via the lunch meetings with the Head provides regular feedback and the Parents Advisory Council which meets termly is also invaluable. Governors have benefitted from meeting for a business lunch with the Head Boys/Girls of each year group and the Parents Advisory Council during which we welcomed ideas and feedback to improve the school and aim to address any concerns which they raised.

Whilst there is no legal obligation for Governors to provide this Annual Report or to hold an annual meeting with parents, the Board is cognisant of how important it is to make available information about the School. In this twenty-third Report, I am pleased to highlight a summary of the examination results which are shown in more detail later in the Report.

97% of the students in Key Stage 4 achieved 10 or more GCSEs at A* - C including Mathematics and English. A* and A grades at 54% were the highest in the School’s history. We believe that this will again place the School as the top performing Comprehensive School in England. Thomas Telford School will be at the top of the Government Performance Tables for the fourteenth year in succession using the Government’s main benchmark.

GCSE results were complemented by excellent A Level results. 87%+ of the students applying for university gained places at their first choice establishment. We have seen an understandable drop from 85% to 75% in the number of students wishing to attend university or stage school, resulting in a greater focus on gaining employment at an earlier stage in what is a difficult and challenging jobs market.

Destination of Leavers All students have face to face careers interviews and action plans to ensure smooth transitions at the end of Year 11. 90% of our Year 11 students transferred into our Sixth Form and the remaining 10% either entered employment or registered for Post 16 Education and Training elsewhere, primarily in order to study courses in subject areas not provided by the School.

Eight Sixth Form students opted to take a gap year as a strategic decision to gain necessary experience which will enable them to make a competitive application to their university course of choice. Of those students entering higher education in September 2013, 125 (87%) were accepted onto their first choice course, or course secured through the adjustment process, with 51 students (36%) gaining places at Russell Group and Times Top 25 universities.

Careers Provision and Business and Industry Links Our Careers and Industry Links provision remains integral to the School curriculum. We continue to provide our students with top quality programmes to guide and support them through further or higher education and on to employment. This is crucial in the current economic climate! Our careers provision includes:

 A personalised approach to careers ensuring each student has a personal roadmap for their chosen path

 An extensive programme to support those students wishing to apply to Oxford, Cambridge and other prestigious universities

 A package of focused support for students pursuing a career in medicine or dentistry

 An employability skills module to support students into the world of work and throughout their working lives

Other careers initiatives to enhance opportunities for the students continued, ie the Student “Job Opps” webpage promotes carefully selected vacancies, apprenticeships and other school leaver recruitment programmes; an alumni project so that students can access a professional support network supplied by previous students of the School; and regular work experience for those students intending to apply for university courses such as: medicine, dentistry, veterinary sciences, nursing, midwifery and primary education.

Over 1,000 students used the Careers Resource Area during the last twelve months, seeking help on a broad range of issues, including volunteering opportunities, finding employment, careers advice and gaining entry to university or stage school. The programmes introduced the year before last for Oxford and Cambridge, medicine and dentistry applicants resulted in the highest number of early UCAS applicants in the history of the School, with 16 students meeting the early UCAS APPLY deadline on 15 October.

The Careers Discovery Programme for Year 10 students and their parents continues to be a most successful event with all the Year 10 students and their parents attended the evening sessions. The feedback was excellent and we remain the only school in the county to offer this facility. The programme was successfully extended to include Year 9 students in 2012-13 and was welcomed by parents. The labour market information allowed students to make better informed decisions about their future.

Our industry links programme continues to expand and we are grateful for the continuing support of local employers. The Work Placement Team again organised two weeks’ work placement for over two hundred 6.1 students, in addition to securing other business support for the curriculum for other School Year groups. Year 10 students took part in a work related learning week in July which received excellent feedback from all concerned. The week included 40 students experiencing the Aeronautical Engineering Challenge delivered at School and 12 students participating in the week-long HealthTec programme offering a hands-on medical programme in conjunction with New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.

In July, a careers week was held for Sixth Form students in order to prepare them for their university choices in 2013. During the week, there were personal statement workshops, student finance presentations, expert careers talks from alumni and key partners, as well as a visit to the University of Birmingham. Specialist provision is delivered to our Performing Arts Academy students and the School continues to see a high proportion of these students successful in their applications to stage school.

The Governors and staff of the School are delighted with, and most grateful for, the continuing support given by our Sponsor, The Mercers’ Company, which offers scholarships to some of our students to provide financial support during their years at university. Their funding also enabled nine students to participate in a five day voyage on the Tall Ship ‘Jolie Brise’, a tremendous experience for them.

On behalf of the Governing Board, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Careers Team, for the support and guidance given to the students during this very important stage in their life.

Sport During the 2012-2013 academic year Thomas Telford School students achieved remarkable representative honours with over 200 students representing their District, County, Region or Country in a wide variety of sports. An incredible 57 boys and girls played Football for their County, District or Professional Clubs. At the very highest level, students represented England, Wales or Great Britain in Football, Hockey, Cricket,

Golf, Rounders, Ice Hockey, Kick Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts. Several students are also nationally ranked in Swimming, Trampolining, Boxing, Karate, Tae Kwando, BMX and Triathlon. Details are can be found in the Sporting Roll of Honour on Pages 8-11. Below is an overview of some of the outstanding achievements.

In Swimming, the School competes strongly at County and Regional level. Three swimmers won Gold medals at the County Swimming Championships with a further 13 medals at Silver and Bronze. Six swimmers then went on to represent the Schools Swim team. As a squad, the team swam strongly in numerous events, notably the qualifiers for the National Schools Relay Championships.

In Football, the boys and girls teams contested 10 out of the 12 Shropshire Schools’ County Cup Finals. In an amazing achievement, all 10 teams were victorious in their respective finals. In national competitions, Thomas Telford School has had a fantastic season. In the boys’ competitions, we have contested three national finals, two semi-finals, and one quarter final. Indeed all of our boys’ teams either won the national title or lost to the eventual winners or runners up. Our U12 B team played their final at Sheffield United Football Club, losing to the only goal of the game against a strong Harefield Academy. However, our two most senior teams tasted National Cup glory. Our U16s convincingly won their final 3-0, played at Burton Albion Football Club. Our U18s topped off a fantastic season by going one step further than last season when they were crowned champions of England in a dramatic final played at Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. Our Sixth Form girls’ team made excellent progress nationally, losing in the quarter finals to the eventual winners. Our U12s have shown real promise this year. They qualified through regional competitions to the National 5-a-side Finals where they lost the final on penalties. This team also entered the National Futsal Competition and have qualified for the National Finals that will take place at the end of the year.

In Hockey, our U15 boys’ team were triumphant in their County Cup final beating Adams Grammar School. The Golf team had a hugely successful two days at the EGU National Schools Team Championships held at the prestigious Woodhalls Spa Golf Resort. Harry Burt, William Enefer and Nicholas Jones finished as runners up in the event that was attended by 36 schools from all over the country.

We sent three teams to the West Midlands Schools Skiing Championships, competing at U14 and U16 Boys and U16 Girls. All three teams won their relevant age categories in a superb night of skiing, making Thomas Telford School the top performing school in West Midlands Skiing.

Our U15 Cricketers were losing finalists in the T20 Shropshire County Cup. They also did fantastically well to progress through to the Midlands Semi Final of the Lords Taverners National Cup where they were bowled out by the excellent Bedford School. The U13s reached the Semi Final of the Shropshire County cup as did the U14s in both the Lords Taverners and their Shropshire County Cup.

In Athletics, our Junior and Intermediate boys’ teams won the Bayley Mile for the fifth year in succession, with our Cross Country team continuing to dominate on a county level. Our Junior Boys (Yr 7/8) were crowned the Shropshire Schools Athletics champions.

Performing Arts The 2013 School Production of “We Will Rock You” proved a very popular event with tickets selling out quickly for four performances shortly after Easter and a testing period of heavy snow. Everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed working on this event and their hard work was rewarded with outstanding feedback from the audiences throughout the week.

The School Choir has continued to make exciting progress and enjoyed a second successful performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the Last Night of the School Proms last November. The School Jazz Band and Concert Band continue to support local events through guest appearances and they particularly enjoyed performing at the Parent Advisory Council Summer Ball at the Molineux in May.

Finance, Administration and Premises Director of Finance, Steve Turton, has maintained a firm rein on the finances, achieving optimum value for money. The annual programme of repairs together with the refurbishment of several areas during the summer holidays have resulted in the fabric of the building being maintained to its usual high standard. 17 Study rooms have been refitted with ‘state of the art’ whiteboard technology. A new 3G football pitch has been laid to help us combat the adverse weather conditions. We have started a phased programme of external maintenance to ensure the fabric of the School is maintained to the highest possible standard. The groundsmen have kept all areas tidy and have ensured that playing surfaces and pitches have been conserved in good order. It continues to be very pleasing that students respect the quality of their environment and thus contribute to its ongoing pristine condition.

IT Director, Rob Cullen’s work to keep the School abreast with the latest technology has continued and his department has worked tirelessly installing new infrastructure, hardware and software upgrades.

Members of the non-teaching staff and administration team have worked hard and effectively supported the senior management team and teaching staff, whilst the catering team have maintained the provision of varied and healthy eating options for all.

Staff and students have also continued to utilise fully the fitness centre and swimming pool facilities on a regular basis. Bespoke classes and individual fitness programmes remain popular amongst all users.

The Advisory Council has made a prodigious contribution to the effectiveness of the School, in particular supporting initiatives for the students. Termly meetings of the Parents Advisory Council provide a valuable opportunity to review the School’s policies and procedures and act as a forum where issues relating to students’ progress and welfare can be discussed. A number of events, including the May Ball, Summer Fayre and Golf Day, raised in excess of £9,000, from which the students benefited enormously. The funds raised by the Social and Development Committee are exceptional and some of the donations made last year included over £1,000 towards Radio Mics for the Theatre, £800 to Humanities to purchase two Apple IPads and the Music Department received £1,700 to purchase new instruments. Many other students also benefited from the money given by the Committee.

The Road Safety Group continues to encourage parents to park and drive responsibly in the vicinity of the School and is always ready to liaise with the local authority and the police to help to resolve issues arising from time to time.

Teaching and Support Staff We are fortunate to have such dedicated and caring teachers and support staff who provide support and encouragement to every student to ensure that they achieve their potential. The School continues to maintain a full complement of staff each year and supply teachers are never used for cover, flexibility of permanent staff resources being preferred. The School also continues to provide additional core subject sessions during Session 3 for students who need extra support.

Sponsors The Mercers' Company and Tarmac Holdings Limited, the School’s main sponsors, are totally committed to the aims and objectives of the School. They continue to offer generous financial support to the students in a wide variety of ways. Each Sponsor nominates four Governors to serve on the Governing Board and this provides the Sponsors with ongoing information regarding the achievements of the School. The Headmaster is also able to seek advice from Governors when needed.

Outreach Work The well-established Mathematics Club for seven local primary schools goes from strength to strength. Mathematics and English teaching at Madeley Academy has been supported by our staff and improved examination outcomes have been achieved. Various sporting programmes have been supported, assisting with a Sports Day at The Bridge School, helping to run the Shropshire Youth Sport Games and supporting a Golf Day for students with specific needs. The Bridge School have continued to enjoy use of the School’s facilities supported by our PE staff.

Our sponsored Academies at Walsall, Sandwell and Madeley continue to thrive and improve educational standards through a collaborative support network. We have also recently become a co-sponsor with the Edge Foundation of Bulwell Academy in Nottinghamshire

Governors There have been some changes to the Governing Board members, Mr Richard Cunis resigned from the Governing Board with effect from 16 July 2012. Mr Cunis joined the Board in May 2006 and served as Chairman from July 2007.

Mrs Sarah Percox, Governor, resigned in July 2013 having served for five years and Mr Hugh Clark was appointed to the Board in March 2013.

May I take this opportunity to thank Mr Cunis and Mrs Percox for all their support, commitment and advice during their time on the Board. I would also like to place on record the Board’s thanks to the teachers, support staff and the Headmaster for all their hard work and commitment during the last year. I thank also, all parents for their continuing support of the School and, importantly, my gratitude and congratulations go to the students who contribute to its success and outstanding reputation.

Keith Jackson Chairman of Governors

Action and Events During 2012/2013

Students’ efforts, hard work and progress recognised by subject teachers are awarded a Headmaster’s Commendation and 1260 commendations were awarded last year. The student who receives the most Commendations is recognised at Achievement Evening when they are awarded a trophy and a prize.

Below are some of the Routine Events which have taken place:-

Social events organised by the Parents Advisory Council Options Evenings Sixth Form Information Evening Curriculum Information Evenings Christmas Concert Christmas Carol Service Induction Programmes for Students Music, Drama and Dance Events School Production of “We Will Rock You” Two Achievements Evenings Many Sports, Historical, Geographical and Cultural Trips Abroad Sports Day Football Tournaments Swimming Galas Inter-House Competitions Family Swimming Sessions Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Public Speaking Competitions Weekly Ethical Debates

We were thrilled and excited that one of our students, Aidan Reynolds, was one of the promising young athletes chosen to light the Olympic Flame at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 games. Aidan is now studying Mathematics at Oxford.

In September, we were delighted to invite former student, Warrant Officer Kim Hughes back to the School to unveil a plaque commissioned in his honour. Kim, who was in one of the first cohort of students to be admitted to Thomas Telford School, was awarded the George Cross in 2010 for a remarkable act of bravery whilst serving in Afghanistan. Located in the School’s reception, the plaque is an illustration of his actions which the Army described as the “single most outstanding act of explosive disposal ever recorded in Afghanistan.”

On a termly basis, the Governing Board continue to monitor progress against issues arising from the School Development Plan. An independent Health and Safety consultant also provides an annual Health and Safety Report for Governors’ consideration and action where necessary.

Students continue to receive a Record of Achievement (ROA) or Annual Report at the end of the academic year and parents and personal tutors discuss progress and set targets. Parents also continue to get modular reports on progress every 4-5 weeks and are asked on each occasion if they are satisfied with homework and the general standard of work. We very much value this regular line of communication with parents.
