The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.

  • The Lost Generation How UK Post-Rock Fell in Love with the Moon, and a Bunch of Bands Nobody Listened to Defined the 1990S by Nitsuh Abebe
Pitchfork | http://pitchforkmedia.com/features/weekly/05-07-11-lost-generation.shtml 11 July 2005 The Lost Generation How UK post-rock fell in love with the moon, and a bunch of bands nobody listened to defined the 1990s by Nitsuh Abebe his decade’s indie-kid rhetoric is all about excitement, all about fun, all about fierce. TThe season’s buzz tour pairs ... with Soundsystem, scrappy globo-pop with the kind of rock disco that tries awfully hard to blow fuses. The venues they don’t hit will play host to a new wave of stylish guitar bands, playing stylish uptempo pop, decamping to stylish afterparties. Bloggers will chatter about glittery chart hits, rock kids will buy vintage metal t-shirts and act like heshers, eggheads will rave about the latest in spazzed-out noise, and everyone will keep talking about dancing, right down to the punks. Yeah, there are more exceptions than there are examples—when aren’t there, dude?—but the vibe is all there: We keep talking like we want action, like we want something explosive. The overriding vibe of the s—serene, cerebral, dreamy—was anything but explosive. Blame grunge for that one. Just a few years into the decade, and all that muddy rock attitude and fuzzy alterna-sound had bubbled up into the mainstream, flooding the scene with new kids, young kids, even (gasp!) fratboys. Big kids in flannel, freshly enamored of rock’s “aggres- sion” and “rebellion”—they were rock jocks, they tried to start mosh pits at Liz Phair shows. So where was a refined little smarty-pants indie snob to turn? Well: Why not something spacey and elegant? Why not sit comfortably home, stoned or non-stoned, dropping out into a dreamier little world of sound? It had been a few years since My Bloody Valentine released Loveless, and there were plenty of similarly floaty shoegazer bands to catch up on.

A Preferential Introduction to WESTERN MUSIC for EFL Students VOCABULARY: band, artist, singer, composer, musician, instrument, instrumental, style, (sub)genre, rhythm, beat, melody, acoustic, electric, lyrics, lip-synch, album, Pop Charts /Top40, live music, concert, bootleg, teenybopper, boy band, "one-hit wonder", hit song/album, catchy, (Sth. gets) stuck in Sb.'s head, know Sth. by heart, (Be) into Sth., dig Sth., feel Vs. not feel Sth., record, vinyl, cassette tape, compact disc (CD), streaming service, MP3, playlist, mixtape, remix, round, verse, chorus, music snob, hipster, (music) scene, record label, collection VS. library, pretentious, backup band/singers Classical (Pre-20th Century): Includes subgenres baroque, renaissance, opera, etc. Some call more recent orchestral music "modern classical" or "avant-garde" farther below. Very serious stuff! Examples of composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Bach, Chopin, Mendelsson, Mussorgsky, Ravel, Bizet, Grieg, Rachmaninoff,Coplin, Haydn,Strauss, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Lizst, etc. A Cappella: The opposite extreme of orchestral music is made using only the human voice as an instrument. A cappella groups are very popular on college campuses and TV singing pageantry shows. The Youtube era has ensured every popular song has an a cappella version. Beatboxing is a percussive variation. Examples: Chanticleer, Hyperpotamus, Rockapella, and various "barbershop" groups. Easy Listening: Includes polkas, waltzes, "show tunes" (from vaudeville acts and musicals), lounge music, as well as some "new age", smooth jazz, and ambient music. Some refer to these styles as "background" music or disparagingly as "elevator" music. It is never loud, but many still find it annoying! Most U.S. cities have one or more radio stations which play these kinds of music, but they are usually on AM radio, not in "stereo" sound, and not listened to by young people.

The Peter Ulrich Collaboration Album: ‘The Painted Caravan’ Market Square Records 11 th March 2013 • Peter Ulrich - percussionist for Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil releases new album as The Peter Ulrich Collaboration On 11 th March 2013 Market Square Records release ‘The Painted Caravan’ from The Peter Ulrich Collaboration. ‘The Painted Caravan’ marks the evolution of Peter Ulrich’s trademark sound and casts the net even wider than before, embracing the spirit of baroque pop, folk rock and global roots, to unique effect. A broad spectrum of musical collaborators play instruments ranging from dobro to oboe and everything in between, all of which are adorned by stunning guest vocals. Mesmerizing grandeur, solemn beauty, intricate-craftsmanship and sonic depth are all traits deeply inherent within this album . The Painted Caravan is likely to appeal to fans of Richard and Linda Thompson, Smoke Fairies, Faun Fables, Beirut, Luminescent Orchestrii, PJ Harvey’s quieter moments and, of course, Dead Can Dance. Opening track ‘In This Or Other Skin’ sets the album’s highly visual tone with military percussion, reverb-heavy mariachi brass, bagpipes and an atmosphere akin to Josh T Pearson’s ‘Sweetheart, I Ain’t Your Christ’ in its brooding sense of menace. On the evocative ‘Pureland’, eerie Gregorian-style chants give way to sitars blending with an ancient British feel, providing an updated take on psych-folk, which is laden with charming harmonies and lyrics that echo Trembling Bells. ‘The Secret Gardener’ continues in a similar style but with heavier bass, reminiscent of Cocteau Twins and The Decemberists, whilst ‘Dark Lover’ is inspired by Eastern European and Balkan music, unusually combined with Patti Smith-esque vocals, that give it a punk rock edge.
