When he died recently, Nobodys Perfect: Billy Wilder: A Personal Biography left behind an incredible celluloid legacy. In "Nobody's Perfect," Billy Wilder speaks for himself, in what is as close to an autobiography as there ever will be. Over the course of more than twenty years, she interviewed not only Wilder, but many of the actors and other creative people who worked with him. The result is this remarkable book, a very personal look at one of Hollywood's true creative geniuses. In a life as dramatic as his films, Wilder survived World War I and escaped the Holocaust, though his mother and grandmother both died at Auschwitz. When he arrived in Hollywood, he found himself a writer without a language, a man without a country. Wilder's great gift as a screenwriter soon became apparent, as did his easy rapport with actors. He gave Garbo her laugh, Swanson her comeback, Holden his stardom, Lemmon a career, Matthau an Oscar, and contributed greatly to Marilyn Monroe's immortality. Actors from Wilder's films talk enthusiastically about Wilder. Danielle Darrieux, the star of the first picture he directed, remembers him from Ginger Rogers tells how "The Major and the Minor" paralleled her own life. Jack Lemmon reveals how wearing a dress affected him as a man. Chandler's conversations with Wilder and the others began when he was still a working director and continued through the time he was retired but didn't know it. A man of the 20th century, Billy Wilder lived into the 21st century, alone from his time, a legend forever. This revealing and vastly entertaining book is a wonderful, timely tribute to this great writer-director, a legacy of Wilder's wit, insight, and remarkable wisdom. The book was organized in various sections, dealing with his early life in Vienna and early films in Germany, then in Hollywood, each I don't know of a better closing line to a movie than the one in Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" when the Jack Lemmon character, who has been trying to escape gangsters by pretending to be a woman Charlotte Chandler. Because the author uses scores of personal interviews with the subject Billy Wilder and his coworkers and friends this book reads as a Nobodys Perfect: Billy Wilder: A Personal Biography personal conversation. It is packed full of information and brings to life the man behind the movies. Now to go watch Sunset Boulevard! Aug 12, Kelly rated it liked it. An adequate collection of interviews with Wilder and those who worked with him but, Nobodys Perfect: Billy Wilder: A Personal Biography, not very insightful. It feels like the author collected all of her notes, organized them by film, and created chapters for each. Not much strong writing to make it cohesive. If a nice light conversation with these artists will suffice, you will enjoy this Hollywood memoir. But if you need more depth, look elsewhere. Jul 12, John Kennedy rated it really liked it. There are many lengthy and funny Nobodys Perfect: Billy Wilder: A Personal Biography from Wilder himself, perhaps too long in Nobodys Perfect: Billy Wilder: A Personal Biography cases. The book contains numerous tidbits and insights, with witty lines by and about Wilder. I would have liked to have seen additional attention given to Wilder the screenwriter before he became a writer-director. Still, there are highlights from all his directed movies, including a page in-depth treatment of "Some Like It Hot. Apr 08, jennifer rated it liked it. Really enjoyed this. A bit on the hagiography side, and not exactly sparkling prose, but nonetheless and interesting and enjoyable look at how an Austrian became perhaps the most American filmmaker of all time. Papers based on the Symposium held at Kings College, University of London, 5th & 6th September, 2019 1 Introductory Note Speakers at the Under Capricorn Symposium were each given a 30 minute slot to deliver their paper and respond to questions. In preparing for this collection, all the papers have been revised and several have been considerably developed to provide additional context, argument and analysis. Apart from changes in format introduced to create a unified document (and in one or two cases to integrate images), the papers appear as the writers submitted them. The papers are arranged in the order of the symposium programme, with one exception. Bertrand Tavernier was unfortunately unable to attend and his paper is the first the reader will encounter. • Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Fedora (1978)
Chapter 4 GHOSTING HOLLYWOOD: SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) AND FEDORA (1978) “[A] ghost never dies, it remains always to come and to come-back.” —Jacques Derrida1 “The ghost of Sunset Boulevard was hanging over the production of Fedora . and that I think was good.” —Billy Wilder2 Enter the Ghosts Early into the 1940 musical comedy, Rhythm on the River, Oliver Courtney, a famous singer-composer suffering from writer’s block, tries to persuade young writer Cherry Lane to write songs for him without receiving actual credit. Perplexed by his offer she expresses her fear that this would be a “misrepresentation,” but Courtney puts her mind at ease when he ex- plains this to be a common practice: “It’s called ghost-writing. It’s a very profi table profession.” “For the ghost?” she wonders, only to be corrected by him: “For the writer.” Even though Rhythm on the River (originally called Ghost Music) contains some clearly Wilderesque dialogue, Wilder would only earn story credit on the fi lm. Like Cherry Lane, he was familiar with the experience of being a ghost and hence at the short end of the rather lucrative stick of having a career in entertainment, an experience which extends back to his early days in Berlin where he claims to have written literally hundreds of uncredited stories and exposés for silent fi lms. The term for such writers in the indus- try at the time was “Neger” (negro), and meant to convey both the invisibil- ity of their labor and the slave-like conditions under which they produced their work.
