Preface

As a part of the school of social sciences (Social Work and sociology), M.Phil and PhD programmes in Social Work was offered since 1988. The MSW programme with 90 credits containing 4 specialisations viz Community Development, Human Resource Development, Medical & Psychiatric social work and Criminology and Correctional Social Work with 22 innovative job-oriented courses offered since 1995. Provisions were also made to study additional specialisations, elective courses/value-added courses. It was evolved into the Department of Social Work with separate identity in the year 1996. Advanced counselling, Disaster Management and Social Work with Persons with Disability are some of the innovative courses offered as part of the MSW programme under the choice- based credit system. The Department was elevated into UGC-SAP-DRS-I since 2016. The curriculum is designed to offer field work training, research and block placement programme.

Objectives:

• Prepare social work students for the professional practice of social work for lifelong professional development with program planning & administrative services, based on the core domain of social work

• Prepare students to take an active role, professionally, in addressing social problems and to challenge social and economic injustice

• Prepare students to develop academically to think critically with clarity, act professionally with integrity, and work in teams effectively with humility

• To equip students with the most updated theories, knowledge and skills to be competent professionals in their working environment

• To prepare the students committed to making significant contributions to the social welfare service organisations both at government and voluntary agencies.

Vision and Mission

To build a society free discrimination, oppression and injustice through higher education, research and field-based activities. To equip students with skills such as counselling, community organisation, correctional administration, and resolving labour disputes so that they can help people to help themselves, to provide a combination of theoretical and practical education to students so as to prepare and enable them to obtain gainful employmentin various fields of Social Work, and to transform students into makers of socialchange and defenders of social justice. 6

The objectives of MSW programme are:

• Prepare social work students for the professional practice of social work for lifelong professional development with program planning & administrative services, based on the core domain of social work

• Prepare students to take an active role, professionally, in addressing social problems and to challenge social and economic injustice

• Prepare students to develop academically to think critically with clarity, act professionally with integrity, and work in teams effectively with humility

• To equip students with the most updated theories, knowledge and skills to be competent professionals in their working environment

• To prepare the students committed to making significant contributions to the social welfare service organisations both at government and voluntary agencies.

M.Phil-Social Work

Program objectives

The objectives of M.Phil programme are:

• Prepare M.Phil research students to identify appropriate research topic • Prepare M.Phil research students to understand the assumptions of different methodological approaches. • Prepare M.Phil research students for engaging in ethical and culturally competent research practices 26
