Position Summary: The Newark Museum of Art seeks an innovative and experienced Exhibition Designer to join the Museum’s team and be a core part of designing engaging exhibitions, collection galleries, and visitor experiences in collaboration with , educators, artists, fabricators, technologists, and other partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Experience in all phases of design from iterative concepts, schematic, and prototyping through to creating layouts, graphic designs, construction documents, and installation plans. • Creativity, curiosity, and a penchant for working with cross-functional collaborative teams. • Envision and develop exhibition designs which present stories using objects, interpretive graphics, and digital content to create innovative, accessible, and memorable human-centered experiences that are engaging, inspiring, and inclusive. • Develop project schedules, facilitate meetings, and coordinate with team members, external partners, and contractors to ensure continuing progress towards on-time, and on-budget completion. • Manage several design projects at different phases of development concurrently. • Meet regularly with the Senior Director, Strategic Innovation Projects & Design, to discuss design ideas and status of projects. • Collaborate with Creative Director on exhibition identity graphics and with Exhibition Preparator on installations. • Assist as needed with exhibition installations and perform other duties as assigned.

• Actively participate in meetings and discussions across Collections, Curatorial, and Exhibitions Department.

Education/Work Experience: The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from four-year college in design, , or other related discipline. • Minimum of five years of exhibition design experience or as a designer in a related field. • Track record of designing complex projects with teams and tight deadlines. • Experience developing interactive and/or technical museum exhibit components

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Knowledge and ability to create, read, and understand design and architectural drawings and specifications. • Skill and ability to effectively use software to develop, document, and present exhibition projects. Experience in CAD-based programs (such as VectorWorks, CorelDraw, SketchUp), graphics and image applications (Adobe CC), and Microsoft Office Suite essential. • Knowledge in techniques to display museum collection objects using archival, conservation- acceptable materials. • Must have excellent communication skills and organizational skills • Strong attention to detail and accuracy • Must lean into and excited by working collaboratively on diverse, multi-functional, cross-departmental teams; take and respond to direction and constructive feedback from others; maintain tight timeframes; and meet deadlines. • Able to convey ideas from concept sketches through final design documentation via correspondence, meetings, and presentation to groups.

Salary Range: $70,000

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb stairs, lift and move thirty (30) pounds in the creation of mockups and to assist, when needed, with the installation of exhibit components, Museum collection objects and lighting equipment.
