The thesis presents qualitative perspectives with regard to the cultural performance of carnival in the fieldwork area, in order to analyse the ‘performativity’ of carnival in these contexts: how it enacts and embodies a range of instrumentalities with regard to notions of community, culture and place. The thesis serves to unpack the ‘performance efficacy’ of carnival within the wider political and cultural landscape of the UK in the early 21st century, revealing the increasing influence of institutional policy on its aesthetics and cultural performance. By way of contrast, the thesis also asserts the value of vernacular carnivalesque street performance as a contestation of hegemonic notions of ‘art’, ‘place’ and ‘culture’.

Long woodland trails, wetlands with boardwalks, lake, heath, grassy plains In Brief This is a fascinating walk of great variety, featuring long woodland trails, many of them unsigned, punctuated by some considerable surprises. The most notable of these is the Wetlands Centre where a boardwalk and good sandy paths keep you dry-shod, and where food and drink is available at the Heather Farm Café . There are no nettles and no troublesome undergrowth on this walk. Some of the paths on the north side are muddy in a wet winter but the lack of fencing means you can usually skip to either side. Provided you have good boots, you will enjoy this walk even (or especially) in winter. With very little road walking (and no stiles!), your dog will be very welcome on this walk. The walk begins at the Fishpool car park on Chobham Common, Surrey. The car park is just off The Gracious Pond Road. (signed)…………Stephanie Piotrowski ……………… Piotrowski 2 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image.

    Parish Magazine – October 16 issue Shere Surgery – visitors to Shere surgery should be pleasantly surprised by the ease of dropping off patients outside the surgery, soon. This area gets very muddy in the autumn and winter and is difficult to negotiate, particularly for elderly or disabled people. So this autumn, Surrey Highways will be tidying it up. There will be a new pavement and kerb to the road along the full length of the surgery and car park frontage and also a kerbed dropping off bay. The Parish Council has contributed towards the cost by purchasing the conservation granite-style kerbing which will match the rest of the kerbing in the village. The Parish Council will also tidy up the messy verge. Vine Cottages, Shere – some of the kerbing bought by the Parish Council (see above) is being used to raise the pavement outside Vine Cottages, at the junction of Middle Street and Gomshall Lane. Together with associated drainage works, this should help to prevent flooding outside Vine Cottages. Currently, after a heavy downpour, those properties are left with a sea of mud and debris that washes down from London Lane, outside their houses, so the Vine Cottages owners particularly welcome this scheme. HGV routes – see Village Voices for a progress report on action to prevent HGVs travelling through Shere. Disabled parking bay in Middle Street, Shere – you may have noticed that there is a new parking bay for disabled people, in Middle Street, just down from the Co-op. Thanks to Guildford Borough Council’s parking team for installing the bay.

COUNCIL NEWS Moated site, South Parit, Grayswood. Discussions relating to the proposed gift of the Scheduled Ancient Monument by the owner to the Society, first reported in Bulletin 253, are progressing well. Present proposals envisage the Society ultimately acquiring the freehold of the site, part of which would be leased to the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The Society would be responsible for maintaining the site and arranging for limited public access. It now seems probable that this exciting project will become a reality and a small committee has been formed to investigate and advise Council on the complexities involved. Council has expressed sincere and grateful thanks to the owner of South Park for her generosity. Castle Training Dig. Guildford Borough Council has approved a second season of excavation at the Castle, which will take place between the 8th and 28th July 1991. Those interested in taking part should complete the form enclosed with this issue of the Bulletin and return it to the Society. The route follows part of the River Wey Navigation, which was one of the earliest British rivers to be made fully navigable, and is now a popular waterway for recreational boating. The walk passes Pyrford Church, Pyrford Lock and Ockham Mill, and close to the ruins of Newark Priory which was formerly occupied by Augustinian canons.
