Palmer Land Trust Protects historic Chapman Ranch Headquarters in Teller and Fremont County The Palmer Land Trust, in partnership with Great Outdoors Colorado, National Scenic Byways Program, the Mary K. Chapman Foundation, and the Chapman family, has protected the historic Headquarters of the Chapman Ranch. To date, the land trust has protected approximately 2,100 acres of this spectacular property. The Chapman Ranch lies south of the Cripple Creek National Historic District. The ranch is bisected by Shelf Road, a prominent leg of the Gold Belt Tour , one of the country's premier national scenic byways. It contains an impressive topography and a variety of habitats that span areas ranging from 6,900 feet to 10,000 feet in elevation. Three generations of the Chapman family have lived on the ranch since the original 160-acre homestead was purchased in 1921. Today, the property is owned by Marlene J. Chapman and managed by her son, Jim Chapman. The conservation of the ranch ensures that nearly 2.2 miles of scenic land directly adjacent to the byway will never be developed. The protected land, together with neighboring Bureau of Land Management Land, forms a nearly 5-mile protected corridor in one of the most scenic and rugged canyons in Colorado. The ranch also protects a variety of wildlife habitat. Colorado Parks and Wildlife identifies the property as critical habitat for bighorn sheep and turkey, as well as habitat for black bear, mule deer and mountain lion. The ranch hosts an important big game migratory corridor between the Arkansas River Valley and the higher elevations of , as well as a valuable habitat area, identified by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, which includes over 5 miles of riparian habitat along Four mile and Cripple Creeks. The ranch represents one of the largest and last working cattle ranches in in the Pikes Peak Region. The Chapman family has used the property for agriculture for 90 years and intends to continue this use into the future. Currently, the Headquarters is used for rotational grazing and contains approximately 100 acres of beautiful irrigated hay meadows. The hay meadows provide the feed critical to the family’s ranching operations and the family’s new and expanding local beef business.
