Local historian Bob El- liott and the Tecumseh Volunteers hope to have the monument cleaned up in the near future. “The foundation is rough, and the hammer on the musket is bro- ken off,” Elliott said of some of the needed repairs. The cost to re furbish the monu- ment will be $20,000, and the group has been working diligently to gather money. Currently, there is between $10,000 and $12,000 in a local account for the restora- tion. “We want to do it right,” Elliott said. The group also is working to get grants to help with the cost of repairs. Elliott sees the monument as an important visual for Tecumseh his- tory. Originally located where the Tecumseh District Library now stands, the monument was moved to Brookside Cemetery in 1928. “It just fits there perfectly along the stream,” said Elliott. “That monument definitely needs to be preserved. It’s got charac- ter.” Originally from the Ann Arbor area, Elliott moved with his family HERALD FILE PHOTOS BY DEB WUETHRICH to Tecumseh 25 years ago right Tecumseh resident and historian Bob Elliott is spearheading an effort to restore the Civil War monument in Brookside Cemetery.
