  • Authenticity, Politics and Post-Punk in Thatcherite Britain
‘Better Decide Which Side You’re On’: Authenticity, Politics and Post-Punk in Thatcherite Britain Doctor of Philosophy (Music) 2014 Joseph O’Connell Joseph O’Connell Acknowledgements Acknowledgements I could not have completed this work without the support and encouragement of my supervisor: Dr Sarah Hill. Alongside your valuable insights and academic expertise, you were also supportive and understanding of a range of personal milestones which took place during the project. I would also like to extend my thanks to other members of the School of Music faculty who offered valuable insight during my research: Dr Kenneth Gloag; Dr Amanda Villepastour; and Prof. David Wyn Jones. My completion of this project would have been impossible without the support of my parents: Denise Arkell and John O’Connell. Without your understanding and backing it would have taken another five years to finish (and nobody wanted that). I would also like to thank my daughter Cecilia for her input during the final twelve months of the project. I look forward to making up for the periods of time we were apart while you allowed me to complete this work. Finally, I would like to thank my wife: Anne-Marie. You were with me every step of the way and remained understanding, supportive and caring throughout. We have been through a lot together during the time it took to complete this thesis, and I am looking forward to many years of looking back and laughing about it all. i Joseph O’Connell Contents Table of Contents Introduction 4 I. State of the Arts: Government, National Identity, and the Arts in Singapore Abstract In the 1960s, countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia and Malaysia were wreaked by ethnic violence. Race riots broke out in Malaysia in 1969 between Chinese and Malays. In 1973 and 1974 anti- Chinese riots and pogroms erupted in Indonesia. Amidst a sea of ethnic unrest, the Singaporean government became aware that the multiethnic nature of Singapore rendered it vulnerable to riots.Memories of the 1964 race riots and the 1950 Maria Hertogh riots were still fresh. The government hoped that the creation of a cohesive national identity would reduce the risk of ethnic and racial violence. In this project I examine the development of national identity in Singapore from 1965-1990 to see how the government and civil society interacted to create a national identity.

The house is gone. Excavators yesterday demolished the structure, which stood just west of the University Lutheran Chapel and once served the congregation as a parsonage. The house had been vacant for almost two years and needed a great deal of roof, furnace, plumbing and insulation repairs. "It needed more repairs than anyone wanted to give. And it was an eyesore," the Rev. Larry Harris, pastor at the Lutheran Chapel, said. MEMBERS OF the chapel had removed most of the furnishings- doors, outlet covers, windows, hot water heater, bath tub, kitchen cupboards, floor register covers, television antenna, ceiling panels and, of course, the kitchen sink. The salvaged items will be sold later this quarter at a garage sale, if a garage is found. The project, which began about 10 a.m.

  • Five-Percent Nation
Five-Percent Nation From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Not to be confused with Zaidiyyah who call themselves Fivers This article needs attention from an expert in Religion. Please add a reason or a talk parameter to this template to explain the issue with the article. WikiProject Religion (or its Portal) may be able to help recruit an expert. (September 2011) The Five-Percent Nation, sometimes referred to as NGE or NOGE, the Nation of Gods and Earths, or the Five Percenters is an American organization founded in 1964 in the Harlem section of the borough of Manhattan, New York City, by a former member of the Nation of Islam named Clarence 13X (born Clarence Ernest Smith and later known as "Allah the Father"). Clarence 13X, a former student of Malcolm X, left the Nation after a theological dispute with the Nation's leaders over the nature and identity of God.[1] Specifically, Clarence 13X denied that the Nation's biracial founder W. Fard Muhammad was God ("Allah") and instead taught each man was himself God personified.[1] Members of the organization call themselves Allah's Five Percenters, which reflects the concept that ten percent of the people of the world know the truth of existence, and those elites opt to keep eighty-five percent of the world in ignorance and under their controlling thumb; the remaining five percent are those who know the truth and are determined to enlighten the rest.[2] Initially, the Nation of Gods and Earths, as it is known today, was viewed as little more than an off-shoot of the Nation of Islam (NOI).
