The Hidation of Buckinghamshire. Keith Bailey
THE HIDA TION OF BUCKINGHAMSHIRE KEITH BAILEY In a pioneering paper Mr Bailey here subjects the Domesday data on the hidation of Buckinghamshire to a searching statistical analysis, using techniques never before applied to this county. His aim is not explain the hide, but to lay a foundation on which an explanation may be built; to isolate what is truly exceptional and therefore calls for further study. Although he disclaims any intention of going beyond analysis, his paper will surely advance our understanding of a very important feature of early English society. Part 1: Domesday Book 'What was the hide?' F. W. BLEDLOW: II—CHURCH AND PARSONS ALISON YOUNG, F.S.A. THE story of the early landowners in Bledlow and the tenure of the Norman Abbey of Bec-Hellouin has already been told.1 Some account may now be given of Bledlow church (PI. IV), its successive patrons and the parsons who served the parish. Thanks are due to the Provost and Fellows of Eton College for access to documents and to the specialists whose contribution is acknowledged in the relevant footnotes. Again I have to thank K. M. Richardson for her continuing help in documentation. Having invested the capital by a wide flanking movement, William the Conqueror accepted the capitulation of the citizens of London at Berk- hamsted. In due course Duke William rewarded his compagnons and followers with estates confiscated from the Saxon landowners. The Honour of Berkhamsted, with outlying properties, including Bledlow, was originally held under Edward the Confessor by the thegn Edmund Atule. These lands were granted to Robert of Mortain, the Conqueror's half-brother.2 Following the practice, not unknown in Saxon England and then customary in Normandy, of endowing religious houses with gifts of land, Count Robert bestowed a part of his newly acquired possessions on the Abbey of Notre Dame de Grestain, where he also chose to be buried. This Benedictine community had been founded in 1050 near Honfleur, at the mouth of the Seine, by Mortain's father, Herluin, Conte de Contaville. The original text of the charter survives in a thirteenth-century copy, now in Eton College archives3 which records the gift, completed before Count Robert's death in 1091. -

Maps of both areas can be seen below, and data will be specified as to what area it represents: 2 Overview Bledlow-cum-Saunderton is a large rural parish (total size 2,716.55 hectares) in the north western corner of the District and includes the villages of Bledlow (part of the village is a Conservation Area – see map), Bledlow Ridge and part of Saunderton. The parish has lower-lying land to the north with some of it liable to flooding. The southern part of the parish is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (30% or 808 hectares) and the Green Belt (47% or 1,281 hectares). The central area of the Parish is particularly rich in ancient history with 14 Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The Princes Risborough and Chinnor Railway (steam and diesel) passes through the village of Bledlow. In addition to a network of public footpaths, the Ridgeway long distance footpath and the Thame to Princes Risborough Cycle Route (the Phoenix Way) traverse the Parish. -

Wycombe Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment March 2009 WYCOMBE DISTRICT COUNCIL STRATEGIC HOUSING LAND AVAILABILITY ASSESSMENT (SHLAA) 2008 - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 0.0 INTRODUCTION 0.1 The SHLAA is a key component of the evidence base for the Delivery and Site Allocations DPD, and is required to be carried out by national planning policy set out in Planning Policy Statement 3: Housing (PPS3). Its two main purposes are: a) to identify a deliverable supply of specific sites which demonstrate a five year supply of land for residential development; and b) to aid the preparation of DPDs by identifying housing potential for at least 10, and ideally up to 15, years from the adoption of the DPD. The time horizon for this SHLAA is to look ahead to the year 2026 from a base date of 31st March, 2008. 0.2 More specifically, the assessment: identifies a supply of sites and if necessary broad areas for housing development, assessed in terms of their developability and deliverability, assesses the potential amounts of housing deliverable on these sites; provides evidence of the availability of a five year supply of land for housing; assess sites in terms of their developability, in order to inform preparation of the Site Allocations DPD; and aids the regional planning body in its work to determine levels of housing provision and distribution in the region. 0.3 It is important to note that it is not the purpose of the SHLAA to allocate land for residential development. That is to be carried out through the LDF process. Therefore the identification of a specific site in the assessment does not necessarily mean that that site will be allocated for housing development or that planning permission will be granted.
