Message from the Editor Being the last minute creature that I am, I missed my chance at buying a ticket for the Centenery event on 11 Nov. I did, however, mangage to poke my head around the doors on the day to see the fabulous spectacle. The photos and write up on page 5 and 6 confirmed that. Well done to all involved.

Please don’t be alone or at a loose end this festive season. There’s so much to do within this community - thank you everyone for sending me all your events to publish. As the nights draw in I ask you all to stay warm and safe and I wish you a peaceful and healthy Christmas and New Year break.

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED IN DISTRIBUTION OF OUR NEWSLETTER! As another year ends, we would like to thank everyone who gives their time and energy tohelping with the distribution and delivery of the monthly newsletter. A special thank you to Bob Wiggins who has finally had to give up his round afterdelivering to Lashford Lane for many years, but also all the other unsung heroes and heroines who faithfully carry out their duties each month. We all get a well-earned month off over Christmas, so all the best for the festive season!

WEDNESDAY CLUB Our speaker at the November meeting gave us a history of Pinewood Studios, situated at Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. The studios began at Heatherden Hall, a Victorian mansion house, with extensive gardens, which was owned by private individuals before being sold to become Pinewood Studios. The house is now used for weddings and corporate events and the Studios have been built on the land around the house. The Boardroom at Pinewood is still situated in the Hall.

All the "Doctor" films have been produced at Pinewood and the "Carry on" series as well as Bond and many more famous films. Over the years, several Hollywood stars have made films at Pinewood, the first being Gregory Peck. The first film made there was The Importance of being Earnest, which was a great success and starred many well-known names. Pinewood continues to be very busy making mainly films for television. It was an interesting and enjoyable talk. On 10th December we shall have our Christmas Party, which is always a lively and enjoyable event. Eileen Knapp

Don't make life easy for criminals! Cyber-criminals use weaknesses in software and apps to attack your devices and steal your identity. Software updates are designed to fix these weaknesses and installing them as soon as possible will keep your devices & data secure. Software updates don’t have to get in the way of what you’re doing. You can choose to install them at night, when your device is plugged in and connected to wi-fi. You can also configure most devices to automatically install software and app updates. For more information on how to stay secure online, visit www.cyberaware.gov.uk or follow @Cyberprotectuk on Twitter.

Cyber criminals send victims their own passwords in extortion scam. Cyber criminals are attempting to blackmail unsuspecting victims by claiming to have used the victims' password to install spying malware on the victims' computer. The criminals claim they’ve recorded videos of the victim watching adult material by activating their webcam when they visit these websites. What makes this scam so convincing is that the email usually includes a genuine password the victim has used for one of their online accounts. We believe criminals obtain the passwords from data breaches. What to do if you get one of these emails? Don’t reply to the email, or be pressured into paying. The police advise that you do not pay criminals. Try flagging the email as spam/junk if you receive it multiple times. Perform a password reset as soon as possible on any accounts where you’ve used the password mentioned in the email. Always use a strong, separate password for important accounts, such as your email. Where available, enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Always install the latest software and app updates. Install, or enable, anti-virus software on your laptops and computers and keep it updated. If you receive one of these emails, report it to Action Fraud’s phishing reporting tool. If you have received one of these emails and paid the ransom, report it to your local police force.

HISTORY SOCIETY TALK Ð 8TH OCTOBER 2018 600 YEARS OF MORRIS DANCING We were given this talk by Mike Heaney Ð himself a member of Eynsham Morris Dancers. There are broadly 3 types of Morris Dancing Ð Cotswolds/South Midlands Ð distinguished by complex steps, slow capers and distinct tunes and dances; Welsh Borders/Midlands Ð distinguished by raucous behaviour, sticks, blacking up and simple steps; North West Ð distinguished by clog-wearing, slings, steps and kicks and processional movements. There are many theories as to the origination of Morris Dancing but the most credible is that it came to in the 15th Century from Flanders where the wealthy Burgundian/Flemish court had Morisch (Moris) entertainment. In England the first recorded evidence of Morris Dancing was in 1448 when the Goldsmiths Livery Company of London employed Morris Dancers at its grand annual banquet. Shortly afterwards Sir john Folstaf from Norfolk commissioned a tapestry containing images of Morris Dancing. The Livery Companies perpetuated the employment of Morris Dancers at their annual Mid-Summer London banquets with the use of Morris Dancers reaching the Royal Court in 1511 under Henry V111. Morris Dancing then filtered down to the general population initially under the auspices of the Church (Church Ale festivals). However, it fell out of fashion under Puritan Rule culminating in an Act of Parliament effectively banning Morris Dancing in 1654. Morris Dancing returned but no longer under Church control with Whitsun Ales and Rushbearing ceremonies taking place within local communities. The revival of Morris Dancing, however, commenced at the end of the 19th Century with enthusiasts DArcy Ferrars, Percy Manning and Cecil Sharpe researching and reinventing Morris Dancing in the old style. As far as Abingdon is concerned the first recorded mention of Morris Dancing was in 1560 where Church Records detail the purchase of bells for the uniforms of Morris Dancers to attend a Church Ales festival. Today there are 2 sets of Morris Men in Abingdon with the famous Mock Mayor election celebration a highlight. Morris Dancing would appear to be in a healthy state today with new groups around the world developing new styles of Performance.

Or that distraction is the main cause of cooking fires? It's easy to get distracted - the phone rings, someone's at the door or a TV show catches your attention. If you need to leave your cooking, even for a couple of minutes: • turn down the heat • set the timer • or ask someone to watch it for you Or could find that Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service firefighters join you for dinner! Six Quick Training Tips from TLA Fitness

Many of you will be reading this in December which is great, as often many people get to January and then start to look to either find a new fitness routine, join a gym and set their New Year's resolution - yet people put pressure on themselves and can make this a stressful start.

Why not start preparing that little bit earlier and maybe start thinking about what it is that you want to get out of starting that training; weight loss, muscle tone, strength training, improving your fitness for a particular event? By preparing yourself, you can get friends of family to team up and maybe train together in a small private group. You can add some nice new training kit to your Christmas list, which will give you something to look forward to. Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation when starting something new.

MEDIUM SQUARE TLA Fitness have given you 'Six Quick Training Tips' which will hopefully make your start into that new training routine that little bit easier. ADVERT 1) Instead of the January rush to become a member of your nearest gym, look at what alternative fitness providers there are near you. Big gyms are often costlier with monthly/yearly subscriptions and you may 6.8cm x 6.8cm not be getting the most out of it. By taking part in a group class or 1:1 session, the instructor will help you improve your technique, motivate you and can also adapt exercises to suit you. (46.24cm²) 2) Get integrated within the community and develop new friendships by joining in local fitness classes. approx. Don’t be afraid to do something different and join a new class Ð everyone was a fist timer once! The social aspect is an important motivating part of getting fit.

3) Get your friends and family members involved too Ð this could be in the form of a walk, run, cycle, or if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous why not try kayaking, SUP, sailing Ð all of which are easily accessible in and around Oxfordshire.

4) As the saying goes, ‘variety is the spice of life’ Ð try a number of different classes that suit your daily schedule. If you work, try and coincide it with taking part in a class on your way to work, on your lunch break or on your way home from work. It is always more challenging to leave your warm house in the winter so take part in a fitness class before getting yourself cosy!

5) Find time for YOU. In order to give yourself that break away from the daily/weekly routine and to reenergise and improve your overall wellbeing, it is important to give yourself that time each week. It has been proven time and time again that exercise can decrease your stress levels, improve your mood, increase work productivity, increase your metabolism, help to prevent sickness and illness and change the way you look and feel.

6) Don’t, in any way, feel pressurised to get fit. This can make it seem like more of a chore than an enjoyment activity. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had with exercise and the benefits you can reap are huge, however you do need to be committed and stick with it week on week Ð but don’t be afraid to make that leap.

18 Update from Botley Medical Centre, branch surgery Kennington Health Centre I am following up the recent article submitted by Mrs Buckingham, the chair of the Patient Participation Group, as I felt my responses to her were somewhat brief. I apologise to the Group and to our patients for the lack of information provided. Who is your GP? I have been informed that some patients are concerned that they do not know who their own GP is, or what they look like. In response to this being raised previously by patients at Kennington Health Centre we supplied the PPG with photographs of the doctors. I believe a display was made for Kennington Freshers’ Week. We have now produced a picture frame with photos of all the doctors for each site and are just waiting for them to be put on the walls. There are also photographs on the website. I will supply the Parish Newsletters with copies of the photographs should they have the space to include them. Patients can always contact the surgery on 01865 248914 if they wish to know who their GP is. Reception areas The reception area at both sites was quite cramped which made it difficult for patients to stand back from the desk and not overhear conversations that were taking place. We wanted to address this at both sites by refurbishing the entrance. We did this at Botley as the partners own the building and there were no constraints on us undertaking the work. We put forward a proposal to do work to improve the entrance area in Kennington to NHS Properties, who own the Kennington site. Their response was that as there was an issue with disabled access at Kennington it was their responsibility to undertake the improvements and that they would do this. Unfortunately we are still waiting for NHS properties to restructure the entrance. We paid for changes to the counter area as this was not a structural change and we could do it without consent. We have moved the repeat prescription request box further away from reception so that patients do not need to stand at the counter to complete their forms. When we took over Kennington Health Centre we were unaware of the issues with patients in the waiting room hearing what is said in the consulting rooms around the waiting area. Clearly this is not something that has happened in the last twelve months and we should have been made aware of the problem when we took over the site. Shortly after we took over we were made aware of the problem with the two rooms at the far end of the waiting room and have had this area soundproofed. Had we known about the phlebotomist’s room we would have done the work at the same time. We have put this refurbishment into the Practice Development Plan and will get the work done as soon as funds become available. I am sorry that some patients feel that some staff do not show kindness and compassion when dealing with them. We have regular staff training on how to deal with conflict and managing difficult situations. We are aware that patients are not necessarily at their best when they come to the doctors and perhaps are a bit more aggressive than they would normally be. However, I have been on the receiving end of some of the abuse that is directed at reception staff, as I sometimes help out with cover. I do not find it acceptable that anyone should be sworn and shouted at by another person. It seems to me that there is the need for mutual respect. I have asked the Patient Group to help us improve the way we treat each other. Repeat Prescriptions If you are having problems with repeat prescriptions please let me know. Our system should enable patients to receive their prescription within two working days of the request being received at the practice. If this does not happen I need to examine each case to see why we have failed and what processes need to be in place to prevent it happening again. I hope that this article better answers some of the questions raised with the patient group. If you are interested in being involved with what is going on at the Practice, but do not have time to attend the PPG meetings I also have a Virtual Patient Group and can communicate with you by email. Please contact me if you are interested in being part of this group at [email protected] Please contact me with any concerns. We are always trying to improve our service and are happy to receive constructive feedback. Caroline Jones, Practice Manager Botley Medical Centre, Branch surgery Kennington Health Centre
